JW,

the mp3 is on slsk. a fragment of it was mixed in on that MUSIK mag DFA mix that you mirrored the mp3s of earlier this year.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The 12" is great. Best thing they've done yet (at least since the noiz dayz)(I sent that to you, right gygax?).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Blah blah blah

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i do have a rip off slsk that's okee dokee... what's on the b-side (or tracklisting)?

ss, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I forget the what the second track is. I'll look tonight. It's great though. Some melodies!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the 12" is sooooooooooo good! "cone toaster" b/w the eye remix, probably out within six weeks or so. they're in the studio right now with the dfa to record the next full-length.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"cone toaster!" that's it. yeah, i'm loving it. (haven't listened to it in ages tho)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, i'll go add it to my wishlist... ty!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

hooraj! (I also just found "Vision Creation Newsun" which I thought was lost.)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

was it wicked cheap pally

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It was in the space behind the drawers in my office desk.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, this boredoms 12" thing? is this actually available to people that get their records in shops and don't have some kind of mystical connection to DFA headquarters?

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren isn't the full-length done? I think that's what my roommate got in the mail recently....

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

they just started recording.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

MEH

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

title track, oreo, green burrito, scumpipe, mouthhole, and scraps are all totally awes

its got that burbling teeming drony pastoralism that most of the BD stuff after beaches and canyons has had, which i love

69, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone else have the Load Blown promo? I'm really enjoying this, though I'm only otherwise familiar with Beaches and Canyons.

Bus Driver Stu, Friday, 31 August 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

willem, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

new album coming in april, may be their best yet, just wait til you hear this thing

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

o yeah read about it somewhere recently. what does it sound like (eg in comparison to previous albums)

willem, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

there are some good black dice clips from back in the day on youtube now, was just watching some t'other night

Edward III, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

cant wait!

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

I love how this is gonna be out just in time for my birthday

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

this sounds cool. i think im more excited for the art booklet than the music.

mizzell, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

Sounds really like Copeland's solo stuff, esp the last one.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

this is a good thing

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

haha, I'm getting a little bit of an earthbound vibe from that:

original bgm, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

totally - the solo work has spilled over into the main project, and def for the better. the dice just seem more open, looser, etc while still seeming a bit inhuman, too. it's hard to explain, i've only listened twice so far.

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, its like their balearic album maybe! i was startin' to get a bit sick of their overtly dancey stuff

Plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

thats how i felt about roll up/drool. very very burbly, which i looooove.

69, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

This might be their Merriweather Post Pavilion. Ha. No but really-just "located" this. It's great.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

It's already leaked?

This might be the first album in years I wait for the physical.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

Spent all day listening to the Smiling off remixes.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 February 2009 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i think Earthbound and balearic are off the mark, but feel it's kin to MPP, but in their own inscrutable way. if anything, Repo sorta makes Dice come full circle and i find it to be really punk. it's also bursting at the seams, messy as fuck, and i'm just glad that they've sorta reinvigorated themselves with this one. it also coheres with their visual aesthetic (not that Load Blown didn't).
seeing as how it comes with a 20 page book of art, the physical (rather than the leak) will be sweet meat indeed.

beta blog, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

where can this be found? all of my usual tricks are failing me atm

jammed hymen (k3vin k.), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

I was sent it via e-mail from a connected buddy. Much like Ducktails (stupid, ignored thread I started) this shit is good with some shit. If you know what ah mean.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure it will be floating around soon

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Well you're definitely right about it being more rough and ready (I'm basing all of this on Glazin btw) but its also looser, stretched at the seams, blissed out, but not in a boredoms psych-ey beaches and canyons but in a trashier VIBEZZ kinda way. Like something washed up at Ibiza maybe.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

Someone hit me up with this on AIM, pls: brightscreamer

brightscreamer, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

One thing I miss about old black dice was the hardcore vox,

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 6 February 2009 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

So, Repo is "out". Personally, I think it's their best yet. Well, at least their gooiest. I like goo ya know? I'm on my third listen. Awesome stuff. Anyone else heard?

OldHamSweat, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

Listening now

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

This piece is hilarious!

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 March 2019 00:27 (seven years ago)

Also, big snowfall journalism to sell $120 sweatshirts is pretty smart

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 March 2019 00:28 (seven years ago)

Of course, Whiney is right re: the advertorial lols of it all--that bunny T-shirt is a great BD graphic, though, IMO

Rad Macca (Craig D.), Friday, 29 March 2019 00:58 (seven years ago)

Were they part of the Fort Thunder scene in Providence?

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Friday, 29 March 2019 01:41 (seven years ago)

i like their music but they sound like they were lame destructive morons!! fuck off

global tetrahedron, Friday, 29 March 2019 02:19 (seven years ago)

lame destructive morons

noize borad slander

mh, Friday, 29 March 2019 02:29 (seven years ago)

I love this quote:

“I knew about music but I had no idea how to do it. I didn’t realize the rate that someone was counting off was going to set the tempo for the fucking song. I thought you started at the same time, and played at the same speed, and then ended at the same time, and that was playing together. It didn’t occur to me that you could play in time to a beat, actually timing a note or a chord so that it lined up with a specific drum.”

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 March 2019 03:08 (seven years ago)

And also

“And then at the end of the show, everyone who had offered us a place to stay withdrew those offers and the promoter came up to me and was like, ‘it would be a better idea, and make everyone happy, if you just left town tonight.’”

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 March 2019 03:08 (seven years ago)

xp: not gonna lie, there's a little part of me that hates that a guy who ever thought something that dumb still gets to be a musician, and even successful at it, just like people who actually have some basic clue about music, and there's also a little part of me that loves that about music

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 29 March 2019 13:40 (seven years ago)

It's a little like hearing a quarterback saying "When I first got to Alabama, I didn't even realize that those little x's and o's meant something, that you could actually draw a picture in advance that would tell the players where to go"

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 29 March 2019 13:41 (seven years ago)

I mean I’ve read similar stuff from many a punk band, it doesn’t seem so unusual for rock ‘n roll.

get your hand outta my pocket universe (morrisp), Friday, 29 March 2019 14:26 (seven years ago)

I wanna know what embarrassing indie rock shirt Bjorn was wearing lol. There's some speculation between a few private weird twitter accts who are cozy with the band but I'm not sure their speculation was considered indie at the time.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 29 March 2019 15:37 (seven years ago)

they're a noise group, lots of noise people don't know "basic music stuff" or whatever, I still think they should "get to make music" because noise rules

brimstead, Saturday, 30 March 2019 02:04 (seven years ago)

BD >>>>> any of the wackass emo hardcore bands they opened for. Thank god for the Copelands

flappy bird, Saturday, 30 March 2019 04:08 (seven years ago)

Only got to see them live in the later mutant dance days. They were fucking great.

circa1916, Saturday, 30 March 2019 04:53 (seven years ago)

I suppose mic-smashing and affected bad attitudes and screeching post-hc noise was novel to nyc hipsters who'd somehow never heard the thousands of screamo bands all over the United States that preceded Black Dice. I will admit that repackaging Gravity Records chaos-core / power violence for the wealthy and fashionable was a stroke of genius, though

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 30 March 2019 14:23 (seven years ago)

pfftt

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Saturday, 30 March 2019 14:47 (seven years ago)

the early ‘00s still had some crossover from that time

seeing a show with both the locust and the rapture was an interesting bill

mh, Saturday, 30 March 2019 15:37 (seven years ago)

lots of noise people don't know "basic music stuff" or whatever

very true. it's one of the things that make it a kinda folk/populist genre and allows for diversity, as opposed to other "rock"-related genres that have certain educational requirements that serve as barriers to entry

sarahell, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:35 (seven years ago)

i laughed at the thank you to M1ke S1monett1, who was notorious for not paying bands on his label back in the day

sarahell, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:37 (seven years ago)

xp exactly

brimstead, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:43 (seven years ago)

he's quoted in the piece too, talking about how he never thought about or was concerned with whether or not a release would make money

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:56 (seven years ago)

that's the case with a lot of labels tbrr, but most of them don't actively rip off bands and then bully them online when they ask for their contractual share of sales

sarahell, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:59 (seven years ago)

it's not just bands, some people have said he bought expensive records from them on eBay and then falsely claimed the records never arrived

brimstead, Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:45 (seven years ago)

now that's punk rock

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:18 (seven years ago)

Yeah, he tried to rip me off in a similar way

elan, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:19 (seven years ago)

Flaccid Mojo, which is Bjorn Copeland and Aaron Warren from Black Dice, just put out a really good debut album: https://flaccidmojo.bandcamp.com/album/fm
A little like Mod Prog Sic but looser/weirder

kmhydex, Thursday, 3 November 2022 05:54 (three years ago)

This sounds pretty much like a black dice album, enjoying this a lot.

silverfish, Friday, 4 November 2022 13:58 (three years ago)

This might be better than the last Black Dice LP, tbh

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 4 November 2022 14:28 (three years ago)
