But when and how did this all begin?

turban wearing circa ATLiens

Master of the Manly Ballad (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

was it alfred that brought up neil young wrt to andre? or did that not happen?

Sounds right. All these Neil Young threads lately blur.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 July 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

Big Boi is pretty adventurous in his own right and this album proves it, which means he's pretty much the perfect partner for Andre. But it's the chemistry between the two that makes the best records - Aquenimi and Stankonia are better albums than Luscious Left Foot. It's only when the press and the fans started viewing them as oppositional that the Outkast rot set in.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 July 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, I was referring to Andre 3000 when making the Neil Young comparison, J0rdan.

wait waht

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 July 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I should have elaborated on that a bit - my guess would be that Andre started believing his own hype, hence The Love Below, which is a monumentally self-indulgent record.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 July 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

Since it's become achingly obvious that Big Boi is the real genius of this group, how and when did the "Andre 3000 is the more talented half of OutKast" narrative even start?

this is revisionist bs btw

yurp

ballerrr (The Reverend), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

'the real genius of the group' what???

blap...tremendo (deej), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

well i obv don't really mean that phrase literally, but he's def the one who makes better music and no one's really arguin

krippendorf's trife (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

how involved in the production is big boi though? the fact that andre wrote/produced/played the instruments in 'hey ya' made it easy for people to say that he was the second coming of prince...despite the rest of the album basically sucking.

iatee, Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

big boi does production.

sry for misreading whiney it just read to me like u actually believed he was always the 'real talent' of outkast which is obv b.s. -- their post-kast career has a lot less to do w/ what made them good as a group

blap...tremendo (deej), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

i just listened to Speakerboxxx again and it was bangin. I tried to listen to the Dre side and couldn't even get two tracks in before "Everybody needs someone to rub their shoulders and scratch their dandruff" and I smh and turned it off

krippendorf's trife (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but they had a decade long career before that record came out of which andre was a vital part, & i dont mean that like "hey phife was almost as good as Tip"

blap...tremendo (deej), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

argh i fucking know that dude. i'm sayin that EVEN WHEN THEY WERE MAKIN RECORDS TOGETHER there was this VERY VISIBLE narrative about "Andre is the more talented/interesting member of the two." I don't know if you picked up a magazine at any point between 1998 and 2004.

krippendorf's trife (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

no i know that -- but im talking about that period, i think its totally inaccurate to say big boi was secretly the 'real talent' from 98-04

Oh, awesome. A recap in case we missed this argument the first time around.

Mordy, Saturday, 31 July 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

here was this VERY VISIBLE narrative about "Andre is the more talented/interesting member of the two."

actually the hum of people countering this narrative with "Big Boi is totally better than Andre, people just don't know it" has always seemed much, much louder to me than any purported Andre stanning, not saying this to start fights but it's like I hear a LOT more of the former than I do of the latter

of course pretty much the only conversations I have about anything with anybody other than my wife or band are on ilx so that may be skewing my sample data

^^^these days thats def more true. but back around 03 it def wasnt

Actually I read/heard a lot of stuff like this even circa Stankonia. But it depends on what you read. The mainstream press circa S/TLB didn't just rate Andre higher, they actually just ignored Big Boi altogether.

I like J0rdan's argument though: Big Boi's creativity would seem a lot less startling or noteworthy in a context where you had rappers like Mystikal and Ludacris at the top of their game. The beginning of the 00s was a great time for character rappers.

Tim F, Saturday, 31 July 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Do sort of feel like Mystikal - owing to subsequent events of his own making - has been sidelined by history. His last 2 albums are both classics in my book.

Tim F, Saturday, 31 July 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's hard to listen to him for me after reading the news stories about the rape. Like some of his records are the most amazing records but I sort of can't get past that stuff.

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Saturday, 31 July 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i try to do my best not to give a damn what a person does and let their art stand on its own but nonetheless...

8o---e*.\\\||///.*ə---o8 (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 31 July 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

i love that Jive is still making Mystikal do another album. Stay classy, guys.

krippendorf's trife (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 31 July 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)

It's actually pretty simple: Big Boi's stayed in the public eye and has released a really good to great solo album, while Dre hasn't. I don't doubt Dre could make a really good to great solo album too.

fyi just in case everyone missed it the first time

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 31 July 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

Neither one is a genius. One has so far shown a better talent for making coherent, brilliant records. It's entirely possible Dre could cobble one together himself when he gets around to it and isn't so hung up on being the polymath.

You need something bubblier than seltzer, markers -- like "Follow Us."

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 July 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

still need to buy this record tbh, but am checking this song out on YouTube now
