this teen inc stuff sounds like level 42. not a knock of course

uptown churl, Friday, 30 July 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

teen inc is good when they have more than 2 songs we should give them a thread

Forget You and I is gorgeous.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

Weak For Me is perfect. The rest of the songs tend to get a little too moody and lost.

coolsundays, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

The newer stuff is much more consistent imo.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

i hadn't been paying attention and missed this whole EP, but it's gorgeous.

i think i'm just waiting til the next LP to see if she's kinda jumped the shark in terms of ditching her woozy futuristic bedroom-synths thing, in favour of overtly celebratory eighties music. i like it all just as much, but it seems like a weird, deliberate step, that doesn't usually bode well for musicians.

the new one is pretty jiving anyhow

schlump, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

How many copies of Good Evening were made on vinyl? I wanna bid on one but don't wanna over pay.

a bunch, i thought?, in case you're still thinking about it. it's getting re-pressed on stones throw sometime, anyway.

she's collaborating with julia holter at the minute, which sounds like a good combo

thats good to hear, i've been wanting some new nite jewel in my life for a while.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 August 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

the ep & 12" were both v compelling in different ways, i thought. 'natural causes' or its remix popped up on shuffle a few days ago and really struck me. so nice texturally. i'm kinda curious to hear what the new one's like - i think because i assume it'll be hi-fi & lively, & so not bear the lo-fi, slo-mo & slinky characteristics that made me love the first one - but sorta feel like i'll just love it regardless. NJ are kinda special to me because i didn't listen to a lot of this kind of synth music beforehand, or only to some of the particular reference points it seems to swirl up, & so they maybe get extra credit for like concocting stuff they didn't actually invent. but yeah it thrills me that some is en route!

I was at the Computerworld show. Was v. cool

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

the clip above is terrific. it sorta sounded like live drums on another clip, but it was just her or ..?

bruce actual springsteen (schlump), Sunday, 14 August 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

Just her. The drums/rhythm track seemed to originate from her laptop.

What happened to Nite Funk/Dam Jewel???

the NJ record is done & occasionally people on twitter are all omg you gotta hear this!, but there's no release or anything, yet.
& yeah at jamming it goes through my head on repeat -- the dam funk remix particularly, and 'natural causes'. nj is so slinky.
i think nite funk finished an ep, idk what's happening with it though.

her & j holter play with linda perhacs semi-regularly, now, too, i think. oh & there's this -- http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/12440-see-blind-through-ft-ramona-gonzalez-of-nite-jewel/

honest weights, square dealings (schlump), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

What's not to like? That song's great.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 7 October 2011 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

maybe its guitar backbone is less appealing than synths to some. i kinda love her in this hi-fi mode, now, though, & that as someone for whom the bedroom-synth thing was special, felt v current, etc.

just went back to her stonesthrow podcast, loving the patrice rushden & prophet picks

honest weights, square dealings (schlump), Friday, 7 October 2011 13:58 (fourteen years ago)

i kinda love her in this hi-fi mode, now, though,

Was just gonna say the same. I love the drifty earlier stuff too, but I also like that she's not afraid to actually make great dance pop, not just sort of reprocess it. And I love the hard, bright edge on the guitar there. Sounds great.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, agree. i think, i guess because after the first record there was her new stuff, & also finding out about her touchstones & hearing her spin & stuff, there is that danger that she would make the leap into just adoringly, meticulously recreating music she loved. but i think that this is all kinda sharp & quick & sincere enough to skirt that - elements like the bass-playing are definitely learnt from previous music but she is making great, new, collaborative music. i still play good evening all the time anyway, & things like 'natural causes' are back to that mindset.

anyhow i can't wait for the lp, if it wasn't mentioned above it's early 2012 on secretly canadian.

honest weights, square dealings (schlump), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

No, I LOVE 'It Goes Through Your Head'! This one's not happening for me (I'm willing to grant that could be a 'yet').

She Got the Shakes, Friday, 7 October 2011 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

let us reconvene. i ordered the single & i don't think will hear 'sister' til it lands on my doormat, so we can see how it has aged then. really wanna catch her playing sometime soon - think it might be solo shows? - but won't be in the right place at the right time.

honest weights, square dealings (schlump), Friday, 7 October 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah it goes through your head is great, dam funk remix just as dope too

it's "out". Autograph is really dreamy

Number None, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. i'm still playing in the dark, all day long. i have a bunch to write about the record but might wait until more people have heard about it. because there are parts - the first song! - & there is the cover, which make those moves towards affiliation and kinda more overt affectation, i think, w/a lot of '80s music, all of which i think came up upthread when she was releasing it goes thru your head, &c, in hi-fi. i'd imagine the angle from which it does this is probably some of the subject of the big sprawling ilm destroyer thread, playing with a genre, playing with a form. even the sleeve, to me in some ways it's kinda a retro image to make, and in other ways i think it's just trying to be strong like those records, like a patrice rushen lp that puts the singer up front as a face on the lp, & making a record that will look the same way ten years from now. but it's interesting in a lot of ways. there are a couple of songs where the live drums make me really miss the nj slink, & some where the synth sounds don't coast or glaze or ride like good evening did in its way - just has become a preexisting form it loved & descended from instead of the weird, evolved byproduct that thing had produced. but it hits some really great highs too, & like memory man, say, becomes something that sucks me in more the more of a hold i get on it, which i think will happen with all of it. the words etc. i can't work out if she mentions heating up something in the microwave at some song towards the end of the record. she's so my fav, just so pleased to be around for these records.
