In one list, she namechecked the twins from Suite Life, Deerhoof, and Buffy Saint Marie. That's too real to be sculpted by any PR team.

Anyway, she writes good songs (not named "17" anyway), and I'm sure she didn't pull ideas out of thin air. She's probably a crate digger.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link

17 has potential but it's not right

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm hoping 17 was a misdirection and not an archetype.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not very subtle

janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

lol

I think I like this one too

Stand Back definitely deserves a good present-day cover, maybe even by Sky Ferreira, but this one was done ALL WRONG.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a cover? That's why it sounded so familiar!

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Stevie Nicks.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Aha, you're right, the original is much, much better. Still like the Sky one though.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Whoever produced the Sky cover is obviously more rooted in club production than radio production. That BOOM BOOM BOOM beat sort of bludgeons all the charm out of it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:43 (thirteen years ago) link

"one" is terrific. i totally wrote off sky at first when i saw "17" playing on mtv, but wow, "one" completely changed my attitude about her. i hope the album is good!

and yeah, it seems like they're doing the ke$ha/"tik tok" approach for "obsession" -- build profile 'organically' via internet/myspace, etc., then unleash guaranteed-smash single late in summer, release officially a bit later, then let it slowly conquer airwaves just in time for the enormous post-christmas sales. it's probably a fucking dr luke/benny blanco prod. smh. (i was listening to the radio on the way home tonight and heard three dr. l/bb produced songs back to back. that is fucked up.)

and yes "alejandro" is wonderful

teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:46 (thirteen years ago) link

the rumor is that it's ryan tedder and that sky hates ryan tedder

I'm anticipating the Paul Epworth tracks.

the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently, that Stand Back version posted above IS a remix. I'm hunting up the original vsn now (hoping it's not disappointing).

I actually appreciate that it sounds a little like really late-period Talking Heads, especially during the verses. Her vocal and numerous overdubs are fine, but it's probably best this never gets a commercial release.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:05 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean as a single? I think it would still make a decent album track.

daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link

tape store back me up on alejandro sucking pls? just so i'm not the only one?

Alejandro is grebt.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway, I found a zip file of some demos, etc people have collected from over the past year or so. I vaguely remember hearing about her a LONG time ago, when she was still just a Myspace buzzword, but I don't remember if I actually listened to anything on her streamer.

Some of this stuff is good ("Femme Fatale" for sure), and some of it is really, really underdeveloped ("Almost"). afaict, this album could go either way.

i've got yr back, surm

Okay, her weird cover of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" over a recycled Dr. Dre beat is novel at least.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:19 (thirteen years ago) link

her vocals are great on that

it says a lot about the current crop of pop stars that i find myself interested in ferreira pretty much on the basis of not hating her immediately, à la katy perry or ke$ha. "one" is ok, i guess.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:22 (thirteen years ago) link

though i definitely think "17" has more to it

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Please detail the ways in which 17 is not:

lazy
boring
common
pretty bad
all of the above

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think anything i've heard warrants any ~FUTURE OF POP~ talk, it's all much of a muchness except "17" is catchier

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, despite starting the thread, I don't expect her to take the wheel and steer pop in an altogether new direction. tbh, I haven't heard enough of what she's written yet to even know if she's a solid bet or if she's patchy. I do like "One" and "Femme Fatale," though, and those are incredibly different types of songs. otoh, if it's true that "Obsession" is a Ryan Tedder composition, I can just about already predict what it will sound like. She's probably wise to distance herself from it in advance, and that indicates to me she's pretty aware of what she's doing and knows she might have to do grunt work a couple times to get to a better place.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm surprised the one you like is "17", lex, given how much she sounds like La Roux in the chorus.

daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:15 (thirteen years ago) link

lmao, hearing that she may hate ryan tedder is artificially inflating my opinion of her.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

that one song is pretty decent but this is all a bit little boots or whatever all those other chicks whose names i cant remember are. dont really get how she is a breath of fresh air or anything. she looks a bit like a young brooke shields though. Bloodshy and Avant are awesome when they get it right but their failures are so horrible, i mean that they get it right on that One track btw. Hi!

Little Boots always seemed like an empty vessel to me, but SF has more personality maybe? In fact, three years on, I still don't know anything about Little Boots other than that she plays with some kind of light board and that she can be a bitch.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont really know how much leverage you really have to blow fresh air into the music biz w/ ur sassy attitude when you're in a the type of position she is wrt major label grooming; being 17

"One" is seriously addictive.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 9 August 2010 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

My favorite part (that's not the hold & repeat effect on specific words) is the little ascending and descending sequencer part the runs throughout the song's chorus. Very cool.

but, lord christ, could she wear a little less makeup in the video?! It's a super creepy look.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 9 August 2010 07:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i read an interview w/ her in which she says for sure that "obsession" is produced by ryan tedder. oh the horror

teledyldonix, Monday, 9 August 2010 18:24 (thirteen years ago) link

There's a bit in Entertainment Weekly's current issue on her (hype watch!) which says "Obsession" is kind of a jock jam custom made for sporting events and the like. I know she's a smartass, though, so hopefully she's kidding.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 August 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a short clip of the song up on amazon.com and i am mortified to report that she wasn't really joking. there's a lyric about wanting her name on the marquee.

oy! that's lame. screw you, Ryan Tedder and whatever label she's on in the US.

one month passes...

https://www.smh.com.au/culture/music/sky-ferreira-emerges-after-10-years-of-being-erased-by-record-label-drama-20240530-p5jhw6.html

Last November, Variety reported that Ferreira had discretely vanished from the label’s public artist roster. If it pointed to a new dawn for the singer, the specifics are more complicated, says Ferreira. Is she officially free from her Capitol contract?

“Um, technically. In some sense. It wasn’t really sorted out the way it should have been, what a surprise,” she says with an audible eye roll. “It’s very ambiguous. I’ve gotta dance around a lot of things, figure it out and get things back that people shouldn’t own that I never gave them and that they never paid for, you know?

“Honestly, it’s a bit cruel,” she adds. “After trying to get out of there for so long, it feels very deliberate. Waiting 10 years to do that? They should have just dropped me 10 years ago if they weren’t planning on doing anything.”

Tracks she’d worked on across the years, including recordings that were to make up Masochism, are tied up in Capitol’s red tape, Ferreira says, limiting her potential to release new music. Her frustration is palpable.

“There’s stuff I did there that no one else had anything to do with. I didn’t have anyone A&R-ing my record, giving me direction, no one even set up a session for me. I was told that no one wanted to work with me for 10 years, which just wasn’t true.

“There’s a lot of things that have happened and at some point I would like to be able to say my side of it without it sounding hysterical or me having to pay some kind of price for it. But it’s kind of like, what else is there left to do to me? They already took 10 years of my career away from me – what else can they do?”

she finally got out of her capitol contract last year! but they still own all her recordings so masochism is still never coming out. hopefully she can manage to get the rights to it (it sounds like she's trying?) or just re-record it all if she has to.

i'm seeing her tonight, hopefully she won't show up too late

ufo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 00:46 (two days ago) link

she shouldn't even bother releasing something that has the same concept/title as whatever she was doing over a decade ago anyway tbh

dyl, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 03:28 (two days ago) link

Hope you have fun!

Bee OK, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 04:33 (two days ago) link

I was at her show last night, and she was merely...35-40 minutes late lol (this was with a start time of 9.40pm). She played 22 songs and a couple of them had to be restarted, so it ended right on midnight. We got several unreleased tracks as well as the three covers she's currently doing (Til Tuesday, Tamaryn, Suzanne Vega). The whole thing is frankly...pretty chaotic, shambolic and barely professional - she refuses to have a spotlight on her so you won't be able to see her face at all and crowd interaction is limited to an "anyways" or a "sorry" from time to time, plus after literally every song there was a protracted pause to fix something technical. Yet despite all that, when she was actually doing her thing, she sounded...pretty great?! A true enigma and I'll always root for her to succeed because the talent remains there and the songs (the new ones too) are great.

monotony, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 07:04 (two days ago) link

Saw her in London recently and yeah shambolic is the word - the part that did leave me uncomfortable was at one point she snapped at her backing band after a few false starts and the audience applauded her. I get that there's a parasocial element, we all want her to succeed and so on, but no need to make some working musicians the bad guys here.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 10:04 (two days ago) link

very good show tonight! only 20 minutes late, her voice sounded fantastic, there were only limited technical issues (she gave up on "all my lovers die" half way through because her mic was cutting out but that was it, no false starts or anything), the light show was really effective even if she was often just a silhouette, and she seemed to be in a good mood and was interacting with the crowd a bit - she said it was her favourite show by far

the new songs were generally pretty good. someone asked when masochism is coming out and she said she's going to release new material soon that was recorded since she got out of her contract, and rambled a bit about how she doesn't know how to promote it by herself

my only issue was that the bass was sometimes violently loud, drowning out the rest of the mix, but it wasn't too bad most of the time

ufo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 13:17 (two days ago) link

like it wasn't shambolic at all, i'm very glad to have caught her on a good day because she ruled

ufo, Wednesday, 5 June 2024 13:28 (two days ago) link
