that list kind of makes me not like her.

well u did say it was typical hipster fare/stuff she was told to like which is like not a glowing review of the list
― janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)
not that the artists on there are bad or anything, it's just that compiled together... http://cpuwiz.com/smiley/rolleyes7cm.gif
― aborted based fetus (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)
...it's just a little too "stuff that's cool to like in 2010" that's all.

lol at it being cool to like Hall & Oates in 2010

totally!

i've heard at lesat 3 random hall and oates refs in the past year
In one list, she namechecked the twins from Suite Life, Deerhoof, and Buffy Saint Marie. That's too real to be sculpted by any PR team.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)
Anyway, she writes good songs (not named "17" anyway), and I'm sure she didn't pull ideas out of thin air. She's probably a crate digger.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)
17 has potential but it's not right
― janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (fifteen years ago)
I'm hoping 17 was a misdirection and not an archetype.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:15 (fifteen years ago)
it's not very subtle
― janice (surm), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

Stand Back definitely deserves a good present-day cover, maybe even by Sky Ferreira, but this one was done ALL WRONG.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:32 (fifteen years ago)
It's a cover? That's why it sounded so familiar!
― the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:36 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, Stevie Nicks.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:39 (fifteen years ago)
Aha, you're right, the original is much, much better. Still like the Sky one though.
― the subject of many men’s thoughts (daavid), Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)
Whoever produced the Sky cover is obviously more rooted in club production than radio production. That BOOM BOOM BOOM beat sort of bludgeons all the charm out of it.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)
"one" is terrific. i totally wrote off sky at first when i saw "17" playing on mtv, but wow, "one" completely changed my attitude about her. i hope the album is good!
and yeah, it seems like they're doing the ke$ha/"tik tok" approach for "obsession" -- build profile 'organically' via internet/myspace, etc., then unleash guaranteed-smash single late in summer, release officially a bit later, then let it slowly conquer airwaves just in time for the enormous post-christmas sales. it's probably a fucking dr luke/benny blanco prod. smh. (i was listening to the radio on the way home tonight and heard three dr. l/bb produced songs back to back. that is fucked up.)
and yes "alejandro" is wonderful
― teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)
the rumor is that it's ryan tedder and that sky hates ryan tedder

Apparently, that Stand Back version posted above IS a remix. I'm hunting up the original vsn now (hoping it's not disappointing).

I actually appreciate that it sounds a little like really late-period Talking Heads, especially during the verses. Her vocal and numerous overdubs are fine, but it's probably best this never gets a commercial release.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:05 (fifteen years ago)
You mean as a single? I think it would still make a decent album track.
― daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:09 (fifteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:14 (fifteen years ago)
Anyway, I found a zip file of some demos, etc people have collected from over the past year or so. I vaguely remember hearing about her a LONG time ago, when she was still just a Myspace buzzword, but I don't remember if I actually listened to anything on her streamer.
Some of this stuff is good ("Femme Fatale" for sure), and some of it is really, really underdeveloped ("Almost"). afaict, this album could go either way.

Okay, her weird cover of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" over a recycled Dr. Dre beat is novel at least.

her vocals are great on that

it says a lot about the current crop of pop stars that i find myself interested in ferreira pretty much on the basis of not hating her immediately, à la katy perry or ke$ha. "one" is ok, i guess.

i don't think anything i've heard warrants any ~FUTURE OF POP~ talk, it's all much of a muchness except "17" is catchier
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)
Oh yeah, despite starting the thread, I don't expect her to take the wheel and steer pop in an altogether new direction. tbh, I haven't heard enough of what she's written yet to even know if she's a solid bet or if she's patchy. I do like "One" and "Femme Fatale," though, and those are incredibly different types of songs. otoh, if it's true that "Obsession" is a Ryan Tedder composition, I can just about already predict what it will sound like. She's probably wise to distance herself from it in advance, and that indicates to me she's pretty aware of what she's doing and knows she might have to do grunt work a couple times to get to a better place.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:48 (fifteen years ago)
I'm surprised the one you like is "17", lex, given how much she sounds like La Roux in the chorus.
― daavid, Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)
lmao, hearing that she may hate ryan tedder is artificially inflating my opinion of her.
― teledyldonix, Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:18 (fifteen years ago)
that one song is pretty decent but this is all a bit little boots or whatever all those other chicks whose names i cant remember are. dont really get how she is a breath of fresh air or anything. she looks a bit like a young brooke shields though. Bloodshy and Avant are awesome when they get it right but their failures are so horrible, i mean that they get it right on that One track btw. Hi!

Little Boots always seemed like an empty vessel to me, but SF has more personality maybe? In fact, three years on, I still don't know anything about Little Boots other than that she plays with some kind of light board and that she can be a bitch.

Her first incarnation never clicked with me, but “Downhill Lullaby” blew me away, one of the best Lynchian pop songs in recent memory, and this is excellent too. I hear peak Ladytron.

I'm fortunate enough to have picked up a copy of NTMT several years ago for a not-insane sum, but that's been impossible to do for quite a while. If you want it, you're in luck.
Hope she's getting a cut of this, though.

Charli XCX’s management has clarified comments by Sky Ferreira insinuating that her old demos feature more prominently on Wuthering Heights than the album credits suggest. The statement from Charli’s team acknowledges that a “small number of tracks from the album” include “fragments of material originating from earlier sessions,” but that all use was “agreed collectively in writing” and formally approved ahead of release. In the midst of all this, Ferreira revealed that she has finally signed a new label deal after exiting Capitol in 2024.
The statement from Charli’s management, which you can read in full below, pours cold water on a narrative that has snowballed in recent weeks, after Ferreira responded to memes joking that Charli had dragged her into the studio to work on their one credited Wuthering Heights duet, “Eyes of the World.” “To record my old songs******,” Ferreira responded at the time, without further context. Ferreira has become more active on Instagram in recent days, commenting on speculation about her connection to other Wuthering Heights tracks, as well as Stereogum’s story about the claims.
