yeh - by the way is too much of a recent horrible memory. i really can't believe it came out so long ago.

what year did the first malkmus album come out - i remember enjoying that a lot more than californication at the time...

i think one hot minute is a good album though, always had a soft spot for it. it's kinda prog rock in many ways.

Bah, I love the Chilis, both their new and their old stuff. Seems that many of you get pissed off when they sing about the same stuff (drugs, sex) or when they branch out to new stuff (ballads etc), how could any band be liked in that case? Dani California took some time to grow on me, but the video is truly awesome. Also who buys an album for the cover? It could be blank, what matters is the music. And RHCP are one of the most musically interesting bands I've heard. I like the vocals too, they just have a bit of character.

I remember some Rolling Stone live review of PJ and Nirvana opening for RHCP post-"Give It Away" but pre-"Under The Bridge," commercial-wise. Really set up the headliners as the decaying has-beens in the face of these new upstarts. Now RHCP is arguably less dated than either, with a top ten single in the hot 100 and a video where they get to make fun of grunge. I have no idea what the moral is here.

It was kinda weird that they played "Give It Away" as their second song on SNL last night. I was looking forward to hearing another song off the new one.
It was kind of a cool slightly jammy version of it, but jeez, there has to be more TV performances of "Give It Away" than any other RHCP song. It's their default or something.

Watching them on SNL last night I had that familiar, curious non-reaction I've always had to them. I mean, feeling strongly about them one way or another seems at alien to me as having strong opinion about the paper bottled water labels is printed on or something.

watching them on snl last night in the bar with the sound turned down (while i believe "thriller" was playing) i was amazed how much energy they had for gentlement who must be approaching aarp card age.

"give it away" is still a good song.

Californication was a good album and a very intriguing evolution. They haven't gone anywhere since then though, and I'm getting pretty bored.

I dunno, I kind of looked at that as the one scene in the video that's more earnest tribute than mocking exaggeration, given it's juxtaposed with the line "gone too fast" and a dramatic image of a candle's light going out and all that bullshit. I'd be kind of surprised if they intended the same 'hey dig this asshole' tone as for, say, the hair metal scene, but I could be wrong. The most offensive thing about the video, I think, is that current day RHCP is seen as some how the result of all those generations of rock music, or as if the 'real' Kiedis wearing a necktie with shorts is less ridiculous than any of the other fashion statements they sport in the video as caricatures.

"Dani California" sounds like "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty. RHCP are the Tom Petty of alt-rock. Or maybe that's just Rubin's doing.

Oh, I'm sure they didn't. Kiedis has spewed plenty of "Kurt was a beautiful creature, a genius of our era, I loved him with all of my soul blah blah moo moo" shit over the years. All of it was meant as tribute, I just thought it was just interesting because 1) Nirvana is without a doubt YOUNGER than RHCP - hair metal more questionable, 2) seeing Nirvana treated as a link on the chain, 3) a chain of beauty currently resting in the hands of RHCP, who combine all these eras into a brilliant blast of boomshackalacka.

They might have become repugnant but the band's early output - alongside that of Fishbone - were quite important to my musical education as a teen in the mid '80s. I still like "Fight Like A Brave" just fine.

i gues i'm in the same boat as grey, ian. Never done a THING for me but they never annoyed much either. Maybe because they are inextricably linked with Jane's Addiction, and relative to them, RHCP seem less annoying. What's gonna be funny is when RHCP are inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. They do fit the profile you know. My favorite sort of recent thought of them was when Bono rhetorically asked at the Grammys if U2 was really the best group in the world, or is it the Red How Chili Peppers?

I dunno. I liked it that they didn't do the "we're only here to hawk our new album" that everyone on SNL does.

After all these years, I still kinda like RHCP... One of my fave shows ever was back in '84 or '85 when they played UCI and Anthony didn't show up - so Hillel and Flea grabbed people out of the audience to sing.

I have spent 2 hours reading all this, to see what other people think about my favorite band. I've heard that their first two albums are great, and that the other ones suck, well, you know what, like few bands, the red hot chili peppers' music has evolved with the time but it always have something in common, GREATNESS, they are really the best of the best, they love their job they really have passion for music. This week I bought Stadium Arcadium and its pretty cool, it will have a lot of hits, lets see, until now, the best albums are Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By the Way. (Not the first cd, those cd didnt make them famous the cd that make them famous was Blood Sugar Sex Magik)...oh and By the way Id try to say i'll be there, waiting for.....

I always feel a little sad when I hear them on the radio - hearing "Scar Tissue" on the radio before the rest of that awful album was the last time they seemed capable of doing anything worth listening to. Now it's all ballads and going through the motions.

four weeks pass...

I'm having a hard time with Stadium Arcadium. I'm currently fighting the temptation to shut it off halfway through the first disc like I did the first time I tried listening to it. At least the guitar playing is good.

BSSM is the only album of theirs I've liked all the way through, and I've heard all of them but Mother's Milk and the debut.
