am i right in thinking the 1st 2 albums are much more popular with brits than americans?

I doubt it.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)
despite my previous rallying for beast in this thread, i'd probably opt for powerslave these days. it just seems to be the maiden album with the most... balls.
i recently attempted to listen to virtual XI as a joke or endurance test or whatever you want to call it. utterly pitiful. a band apparently incapable of cobbling together a decent riff (as maiden were at that point) has no business penning 10-minute songs.
― charlie h, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)
You cant really go wrong with either Beast or Powerslave for tops from the Dickinson years.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)
That's why my go to Dickinson is Live After Death - best of both and more.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)
so, this thread got me a little curious about re-visiting the blaze stuff. best thing I found on that little journey was a brandy song that samples "the clansman":

Killers is one of the ten best rock & roll albums ever. I'll stack it against any Rolling Stones album.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:49 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, same, but i wouldn't say any less for number of the beast, powerslave, piece of mind. it's not like killers = unique in kicking glimmer twin ass...
(you know, or at least measuring up)

Piece of Mind for me -- their tightest musical album.
― Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 29 July 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)
One of my co-workers just gave me a Killers onesy!

Im in total agreement here.

xxxp my baby to wear but really for me.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)
xpost - Yeah good point. I guess I just not only prefer Paul to Bruce, but I also strongly prefer Clive to Nicko. They could actually swing on Killers. And with Beast, they lost the groove forever after.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)
(Even though I know Clive was on Beast)
the paul vs bruce thing can never be won, neither side will change opinions now.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
love that brandy track
― emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)
We really should repoll this. I loved Number of the Beast more than anything back in the day, though Powerslave was my intro to Maiden so it holds a place in my heart.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 29 July 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
we should poll the maiden vocalists!
― charlie h, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)
and Maiden drummers!
― VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)
can you guys wait til after the alltime metal poll and I'll do this poll again?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:15 (fifteen years ago)
NO DO IT NOW
/joeks, we can wait.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)
cool. Will do it in a few weeks, but feel free to vote for your fave maiden in the alltime poll meanwhile.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 July 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)
paul's fine and all but I can't even fathom placing him above bruce. in my eyes that's like picking the generic rocker dude on half of the first steely dan album over fagen.
― original bgm, Friday, 30 July 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)
You all are crazy, to me the best Iron Maiden records are with Dickinson. Even as a band, they really started to stretch their sound further starting with Number of the Beast. The first one is OK and Killers is pretty good, but I would rate them below the first four with Dickinson. I also think that Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind are also pretty much neck and neck their best two albums.
― earlnash, Friday, 30 July 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)
All you have to do is listen Beast Over Hammersmith...D'Ianno's a nice change of pace, but he can't top Bruce in full wail. There's no way.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 30 July 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)
Bruce also does a great job on the Dianno songs. Unfortunately have never had the chance to hear Dianno sing any of the Bruce songs, but I doubt it would be so good.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 30 July 2010 13:48 (fifteen years ago)
has anybody else noticed how woeful dickinson's vocals are on fear of the dark? that's perhaps not a very insightful question - it'd be impossible not to notice. he'd really reached the end of his tether by that point, and it was nice to see him gradually reclaim his fire on solo records and eventually return to the maiden fold in flying form.
― charlie h, Friday, 30 July 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)
No question, Dickinson looked and sounded bored and apathetic around then, you can see it on the Donington footabe and the woeful Raising Hell. His snarly vocals certainly didn't help Fear of the Dark any, but it does sort of work on "Be Quick or Be Dead".
― A. Begrand, Friday, 30 July 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)
Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the best W.A.S.P. studio album.
― gato busca pleitos (Eazy), Friday, 30 July 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)
seventh son should've done way better. infinite dreams!

The Clairvoyant!
― ArchCarrier, Monday, 10 October 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
band name=record name=song name.
are there any more examples of this?(except for black sabbath)
― nostormo, Monday, 17 June 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
"Motorhead", by Motörhead, off Motörhead .
― A. Begrand, Monday, 17 June 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)
The Dianno years were very well-represented. Thank you, ILM-circa-2007!
― Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 17 June 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)
Google search also revealed Angel Witch and Bad Company to have eponymous songs on eponymous albums.
Others are a stretch, including "Court of the Crimson King" et al.
PS - I am a Killers guy!
― Nate Carson, Monday, 17 June 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)
If I didn't vote Powerslave, I would have.
― 誤訳侮辱, Monday, 17 June 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)
"Lucifer's Friend", "Powertrip", "Saint Vitus" and "Belfegore" also qualify as doubly-eponymous. Interesting how it's only hard-rockers who do this.
― Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)
Another band who have done this is hard-rockers Living In A Box.
― everything, Monday, 17 June 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)
Piece of Mind (1983) 3
insane
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 17 June 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)
I think Piece of Mind is the 3rd best Maiden record. After the Dianno albums.
― Nate Carson, Monday, 17 June 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)
Powerslave got a good showing in this one. was my first Maiden album, and hell, I think it still gets unfairly overlooked sometimes (although ok, ok, it does have two of their biggest concert staples ever, so it isn't THAT overlooked).
Lol at BNW getting a vote.
― Neanderthal, Monday, 17 June 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)
It's not so much that POM got only three votes, but that it tied with the not-very-good SIT, well, I can't get behind that. Even SSOASS > SIT
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 00:10 (twelve years ago)
I love Seventh Son. I'd even consider voting for it as my fav depending on the day of the week.
SiT, though, is second tier Maiden.
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, Seventh Son holds up, despite the synths. Great songs, not a dud on that album, really.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 00:22 (twelve years ago)
An interesting poll would be the best Maiden album from 1990-2010.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 01:24 (twelve years ago)
i'd take brave new world, easy
― reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 02:10 (twelve years ago)
If Maiden were less stereotyped as a metal band they could have gain even more fans imo. They have much more in them.
― nostormo, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)
If Maiden were less stereotyped as a metal band they could have gain even more fans imo.
They're one of the biggest bands in the world. More than 85 million records sold.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 05:07 (twelve years ago)
Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son are both fantastic. Though the band pretty much ends right then and there for me.
