turns out my "frequency" is "mid air". i was mishearing the vocal hook as "i look into his eyes". and i'm still not 100% sure about my prototype. and now i'm worried that there's a bunch of michael mayer tracks that i thought i'd heard that i haven't.

Adam check out the remix of Client's "Radio", which is like a better version of same.

Ha ha a lot of the synths on the excellent Ewan Pearson mix of "Enjoy the Silence" seem to be saying "Rex the Dog, step off!", although obv Pearson's mix is v polite and respectful - esp compared to the ace mayhem of the Rex dub of "Photographic". Mind you I've only heard the edit of the Pearson mix so maybe the extended mix is more insane.

More evidence in support of JX: the chorus of "There's Nothing I Won't Do" fits perfectly over the top of his mix of "Heartbeats" - try it yourself.

Seriously track down the "Photographic" (Depeche Mode) mix, it is unspeakably huge.

I've heard two fantastic Depeche Mode remixes this week - the Rex one and a Black Strobe mix of Something To Do, and they're both absolutely massive.

All house producers should be required by law to do at least one gigantic maximalist electro Depeche Mode remix. It would make the world a much better place.

I think 'We Live In Daddy's Car' is the better track on the 12. Protype is fine 'n' all - it reminds me of Commodore-64 god Rob Hubbard's "Sanxion" loading-theme and has a nice atmosphere, but the vocal glitchyness and super-flat 303esque bass give 'car' the greater momentum, plus it's a much better track for dancing to.

On the Frequency/Mid Air confusion: the 12" is about as unambiguous as Kompakt vinyl gets. Not only is the title sampled all over ILIMA, the label on that side of the record is a picture of a dog looking into mid air!

Which made me think - is Rex the Dog named after Inspector Rex? You know, that laughable Austrian detective drama starring a crime fighting dog? I'm sure that show is a huge export from Europe, and for most English speaking people is the only experience of Germanic television. There's actually been a few running jokes with my friends about Kommisar Rex, while German/Austrian mates remain horrified that it's actually broadcast here in Australia.

Again, this makes me think it's kind of a pisstake - not the music, so much as how it's presented as a 'Kompakt' release.

I've gone off "Frequencies" quite a bit. It doesn't have the residual air of melancholy which characterises all the rest of his best work, that property which allows it to make sense that he releases 12 inches on Kompakt.

yeah, but think about it.

they wouldnt let a guy with 2 small releases and a knife remix under his belt do a Depeche Mode remix and a prodigy ( on their make or break release) remix if it was some nobody.

so its got to be a well known ( in the industry ) person.
