'teflon don' will get 10x better if you replace "super high" with the remix

this is my most otm post on ilx

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "live fast die young" is crap. it feels stuffed into the album, kind of the only thing in it that does but i guess it woudn't be a rick ross album without that

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 23 July 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

"tears of joy" makes that song totally unnecessary

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 23 July 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

also is there any more of a transparent way to show that rick ross ghostwrote a verse for you than by rhyming "maryland" and "marilyn"

― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Thursday, July 22, 2010 10:55 PM (4 minutes ago) Bookmark

Totally. The moment Diddy starting rapping I KNEW Ricky wrote that verse for him.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

who produced that song on the drake album that also bit that "no games" riddim a la "live fast, die young"

― ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Thursday, July 22, 2010 10:53 PM (14 minutes ago) Bookmark

Are you talking about "Show Me a Good Time?" Kanye...

I think the song's alright, but with those vocal samples undernearth it's all too cluttered.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

ha, figures

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, they work on the Drake, not here.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

nah they were shit on the drake album too

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, they worked with the "scratched" chorus and it's like Kanye's trying to prove he's back-to-the-basics with the nod to the boom-bap, and I think it works. There's enough space on the track for them to be effective.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

"aston martin music" is really good

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yep. That should be the closer.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:15 (fifteen years ago)

lol it sounds like chrisette is singing "listening to the yeah yeah yeahs"

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

i should've spoken before this song got all 'thank me later'

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

shouldn't have**

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

hold on, this is exactly what she is singing

the fuck????????

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

tell me i'm wrong?

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

I think Drake adds a ton of pathos to the track, but you know I like Drake doing in situations like these (and in general). At least he didn't get a verse.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

can we talk about chrisette michelle singing about listening to the yeah yeah yeahs on this rick ross album instead

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, that's what she's singing. And I love how she just like squeezes it in at the very end of her hook.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

am i wrong to be dumbfounded by that?

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, I didn't even realize it until you pointed it out. Awesome moment.

I can totally picture Rick and Chrisette driving on the highway listening to the YYYs... ok I can't, but that's why it's great.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:21 (fifteen years ago)

saadiq sounds almost indistinguishable from ne yo on this track

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ugh. I DON'T WANT CALL-AND-RESPONSE CHORUS WITH RICK SINGING.

altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 23 July 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

And Saadiq's voice sounds all pinched and just rubs me the wrong way. And I think Instant Vintage is a classic.

the best hook on the album after "b.m.f." is wiz khalifa singing "smokin them pina colada papers baby girl we don't fuck with them bluuuuuuuuuuuuunts/ unless i'm with the boooooooooooosss"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:41 (fifteen years ago)

"super high" beat is totally the shit -- for some reason it just pops more on the remix -- i think that dope live base just sounds... warmer in the context of two stoners rapping about getting super high

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

also "trees gets twisted up like fingers and gang signs" is a super dope image from currensy

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

also the village voice review of this is great

J0rdan S., Sunday, 25 July 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

Pfork did a 180 this morning, after giving low marks to the first two Ross albums and not even bothering with the third:

have to say, of all the people I'm disappointed in for boosting Ross I'm most disappointed in Cohen, who I can usually count on to take down shit rap albums hilariously

And he gave Arcade Fire thumbs up yesterday, which was a bigger surprise.

I love this album but not on Ian's terms.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

But more importantly, Ross has proven to be among the last of dying breed. His studio albums feel like events that demand the ears and opinions of rap fans.

this is weirdly true

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

co-sign everything except that Trilla was dope and the first of his event/zeitgeist/barometer of the American moment albums

it's a 3peat

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

teflon don > trilla > deeper than rap

neither of the first two felt like an EVENT like 'teflon don' did tho

not really, he likes a lot of bedwetter rock, i only read his rap reviews most of the time.

so is this guy like the dave edmunds of rap douchebaggery or something? that review seems to suggest we should be glad he's grown into the '90s or something

I think one thing ppl are missing in the race to be "OMG HES MC HAMMER MEECH LOL FUCKK HAHAH" is that a lot of his flows actually kind of sound like "Lets Get It Started"/"Ring Em" hammer circa 1988

strange choice to put "bmf" and "mc hammer" at the back end of the album. maybe stacking it with "i'm not a star" at the beginning would've been tough peak to descend from

I STILL hear this in my head when I think of this song almost 13 years later, lmao.

still love this album and inexplicably been bumping it again the last few weeks. feels a little weird blasting BMF in my car in fuckin' 2023 with the world going to hell and falling apart but y'know, whadya gonna do

Sorry to butt in but since this is at the top now, can anyone kindly direct me to the current hip hop thread? I mostly want to work though my cognitive dissonance over some Confederate flag crap Westside Gunn posted — I just should probably just let it go right. This is old news to most hip hop heads.

None of the lyrics sites acknowledge the supposed YYYs reference and the only sources that talk about it are an Alex Macpherson article and ILX threads. Either this got massively memory-holed, or it is some Kitty Pryde "Jay-Z said anime!" mishear that we've all humiliated ourselves with
