I pretty much agree with Phil, although I really like the weird intro.

blackened symphonic epic porno tech doom-core (J3ff T.), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

It's a tough album to assess after just a couple of listens, it really needs time to settle in. Unfortunately the press isn't afforded that luxury, they're keeping this album under very tight wraps.

A. Begrand, Monday, 19 July 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

Better or worse than Nostradamus?

Nate Carson, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, way, way better. Though Phil might disagree with me there!

A. Begrand, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

I think I might too, though I haven't heard either!

Nate Carson, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

Better than Nostradamus in that each song is consistently good, whereas the Priest record has a lot of peaks and valleys. But are the best two or three songs on Nostradamus better than anything on The Final Frontier? That's a tougher call.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 19 July 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

Perhaps Herman can make us a poll ;)

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

I'll pass

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

pl school a know-nothing - in the wire this month there is an amazing photo of this aus metal group called portal so i d.led one of their albs ('swarth') and i really like it, so what else shld i check out in a similar(ish) style/sound? ty

(ps the last time i sampled some hm from an ilx rec, it was a mastodon alb, and it just wasn't really heavy/noise enuff for my tastes...)

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

Portal is amazing. You should also check out some Immolation. The new one is great but my personal favorite is Closer to a World Below.

Gorguts - Obscura and Meshuggah - Chaosphere are similarly unearthly.

If that's the wrong direction, maybe try some Blut Aus Nord.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

It's not really similar to Portal, but Deathspell Omega is another "unearthly" metal band. But yeah, for crunch and brutality Gorguts and Mesguggah is the way to go.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Not really similar but try their labelmates Cobalt. Gin is a terrific album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for tips, dudes, will report back

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

Holy shit! What's going on with this hillbilly hipster doom thing The Body? This 'All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood' is one of the greatest things I've heard all year... It's been out in the US for a while and is quite repped by Aquarius. http://www.myspace.com/thevisionshallcometopass

Duran (Doran), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

Reviewed it the other week, was broadly impressed (tho I had to turn it around hella quick) - seemed like it was Providence noize dudes, are there still ilxors from that crowd posting on here?

I will sug you and ban you on the permalink (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah it's quite good. Saw it on the aQ list a while back.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, was just corresponding with The Body today. They are playing 2 Portland shows early next month.

Why Mid-Level Bands Cannot Make Money

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 23 July 2010 12:17 (fifteen years ago)

man, that's depressing. not surprising, just depressing.

original bgm, Friday, 23 July 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

How's the new Drudkh?

Also really into this band from Philly right now called Javelina. Total Buzzoven worship with killer 'groove' riffs.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 23 July 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

theres a new drudkh?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

oh is that what i saw on emusic? i was wondering if that was new.

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Friday, 23 July 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

all that Maiden talk upthread got me on a huge Maiden kick. I haven't seriously listened to this group, which used to be my favorite band in the late 80s, since 'Seventh Son'... well, actually it was a combination of discovering death metal and hearing "Bring Your Daughter..." for the that caused me to lose interest in Maiden. I have not heard a single new song by them since 1990, so this is like some time capsule shit for me.

A Matter of Life and Death is great! I can't wait for the new one. It's awesome to hear a band that old sounding like they are still in their prime.

richie aprile (rockapads), Friday, 23 July 2010 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

I'm getting to hear it next week, pretty stoked.

Am currently listening to Melechesh (very good)and Fall Of Empyrean (not as good).

Duran (Doran), Friday, 23 July 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

I'm really enjoying the new Accept album. Sure, there's no Udo and the new guy has a similar gravelly voice, plus the album goes on a little too long, but those 82-85 era riffs are back and the new tracks range from solid to surprisingly strong.

A. Begrand, Friday, 23 July 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

Mid-level band math is fairly accurate though you only have to play the clubs that take a merch % if you're on some crappy package tour.

Buying merch direct from the band is a very real strategy to supporting the art you like. You can also give them a place to stay where they can safely park their van, buy them a meal, write about them in the weekly, etc. I try to do a lot to support bands I like without necessarily draining my bank account.

Nate Carson, Friday, 23 July 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Also, I don't see why a band that's making $300/night needs a manager. Shouldn't that % be going to the church as a tithe instead?

Nate Carson, Friday, 23 July 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

hey nate you're in terrorizer this month!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

Downloading the new Accept now. I'm cautiously op...nope, I can't lie, I'm not optimistic at all.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

man that oh, sleeper essay is sad.

my dream is to own a fly casino (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 July 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

I went to B&N to pick up the new Terrorizer and they didn't have it. Would like to see Ms Kelly's treatise on our volcanic stay post-Roadburn. Was a great time!

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

She said in it that you haven't posted your ballot yet ;)

You get quite a few mentions, don't think there's a pic though. It was a good read though. I assume you all had a good time.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

Sadly I think Terrorizer is turning into Kerrang. that 40 sickest riffs stuff was pure shite, way worse than any polls i start on here! yes, that bad!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

actually Nate, is that you looking out from behind the CD? ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

No one recognizes me without my glasses.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

I dont think i've seen a pic of you

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Terrorizer was kind enough to take me on after sister mag Sick Sounds was forced to fold, which was kind of them. Apparently my Lair of the Minotaur feature was in the last issue, but I have yet to see it. My local bookstores are always one or two issues behind.

And Phil, as for the Accept I'll totally concede Tornillo turns on the Udo affectations in a big way, but to be honest Accept would never have sounded this reinvigorated if it was Udo at the helm. He's happy going through the motions with the predictably fun U.D.O.. Accept is really building some positive momentum meanwhile...what began as a pretty innocuous reunion has yielded a big worldwide recording deal, very high demand for shows, and some plum festival spots. It's really great to see, it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

I really should proofread more often.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Herman, there's a picture of Nate with Geir on this very thread. He's a little fella with one of the biggest hearts of anyone I've ever met.

Nate, we should have got a picture when I was out there. Maybe next time.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, i remember that now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

We'll get a picture next time Erik. I can be everyone's Salacious Crumb ;)

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'll try to cut a few pounds so the Jabba comparison isn't as easy.

But scalewise, we are rather different.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

It was more a dig at Geir than you ;)

Nate Carson, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

It wasn't taken as a dig - I'm not exactly svelte, or short. Just being honest!

If all goes well (keep your fingers crossed) I could be seeing you more often so there'll be plenty more picture opportunities.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 24 July 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

Adrien - nice Across Tundras review at Popmatters today! Really a great album, and I'm happy to see them getting press.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 26 July 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

just subscribed to Decibel too \(^o^)/

― ksh, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 3:32 PM (1 month ago)

first issue showed up!

markers, Monday, 26 July 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks EZ! I wanted to get the word out a bit more about the Across Tundras album since it's been self-released.

A. Begrand, Monday, 26 July 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

I listened to the new Avenged Sevenfold album so you don't have to, if you don't want to.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

I really don't understand the appeal of that band. Their last album was horrendous.
