I think you'll find Turbonegro is an unquestionably brilliant name actually, my Finnish friend.

Really? I never understood what the word "negro" has to do with pasty-faced, pseudo-gay Norwegian rockers. Worst of all, the Turbonegro fan clubs around the world call themselves "Turbo Jugend", and they wear "Turbo Jugend" badges on their shoulders. Before I've heard of the band, I saw a guy with such a badge, and thought he was some sort of Neo-Nazi.

You could do a whole sub-thread comprised of only Maryland bands. Dying Fetus! Audio Rapists! Meatjack! Buttsteak! Cex! Fugazi Osborne! Objection to Oppression! The Pee Tanks! Liars Academy (no apostrophe)! Good Charlotte! Laughing Colors! Jimmie's Chicken Shack! Kix! Let the Horse Guide You!

"Um, I have a Turbojugend NYC pin that I wear on my jacket. Don't go knockin the darkness!! [Throws devil sign in air, flicks tongue, grabs own ass.]"

Innit! It's a perfectly normal German word. Most of these clubs seem to have started in Germany anyway

Now don't you even try to claim that "Turbojugend" doesn't bring to your mind any connotations towards a certain Fascist regime and it's youth organization. "Jugend" is a perfectly normal German word, yes, but naming a fan organization "xxxx-Jugend" and making badges which bear that name is hardly innocent.

Kitchens of Distinction... which makes me think of Interpol too !
Well, any band name can be qualified as bad by someone, I'm afraid.

Olivier (anagrama), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:24 (twenty years ago) link

Also "Northern Uproar" did suggest boring meat 'n' 2 veg britrock of the most ZZZzzz-inducing sort. Fortunately.
Actually, at the time, I thought the name sounded more like a really whizz-bang happy hardcore bunch of ravey-Daveys from Cumbernauld!!!!!!

As you can guess, I was most disappointed when I finally heard their tunes!

BTW In terms of "interesting" band names, I don't think you can get better at the moment than The Excrementory Grindfuckers!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:39 (twenty years ago) link

Ween should be a horrible band name but because it's a verb they win.

I must disagree with something Dastoor said like 2 years ago: Soul Coughing is a wonderful band name.

A band I was in in high school once shared a bill with a band called Thunderchicken which was like the Screaming Trees but with Gavin Rossdale in place of Mark Lanegin.

Some of these names, however, are so bad they're funny, which takes them out of the running.

For a name that breaks your heart before you've heard a note, it's got to be An Emotional Fish (mentioned above).

With the possible exception of Dishwalla.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

You've all obviously forgotten the Dogs In Space soundtrack which featured the band THRUSH AND THE CUNTS.

There is also the CAPTAIN MATCHBOX WHOOPPEE BAND (hit single My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes).

Then there's Blodwyn Pig, Henry Cow, M, Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs (Jona Lewie was Lead singer), Kajagoogoo, Spandau Ballet, Pseudo Echo,
and lets not forget both the Guess Who and Klaatu who both named themselves hoping that everyone would believe they were the BEATLES in disguise-SHEESH!

my gf recently met someone from a band called Stutterfly, which is the worst possible variation i've heard on the already awful "Flickerstick/Switchfoot/Fingertight" formula

(actually Fingertight may be even worse)

Economics class is really boring, so a friend of mine slipped me a note that said he wanted to start a death-metal band and make it have THE hands down worst possible name. So I wrote some down and gave it back...he laughed his nuts off. It has now gone from a simple game to a time-killing addiction. Here are some goodies we collaborated on:

Random Mating
Spiteful Sea Nymphs
Mass Obliteration
Vetoed Miracle
Lung Burger
Spirits of Fish and their Desire to be Holy
Muppet Love
Sodomized Christmas Tree (don't ask)
Space Zombie Jesus
Unholy Matrimony
The Fountain Pens
Thoughtless Giant

There are literally hundreds more...too many to type. We get better at it everyday. With enough practice, any one can come up with hilarious names
