I liked Idlewild - see above youtube clips - but come on, its a stinker compared to ATLiens.

Personally I don't see that much of a difference between Get Crunk and Hustle Blood expect one has Jon shouting on it and the other has Foxx do that smooth singinginginging.

i smoked a joint with some friends and put on 'fo yo sorrows' the other day and everyone just broke into hysterical laughter at hearing the hook. not that it's bad, moment of simultaneous hilarity and musical brilliance imo

Having seen T-Pain live, I can tell you he can sing and he can sing well!

I saw T-Pain once and he totally performed live vocals and is generally a pretty entertaining performer w/o a lot of bells and whistles. that was 3 years ago, though, his stage show may have changed since then. xpost

So, this is actually serious question despite the "hilarious," internet-snarky way I'm going to ask it.

Since it's become achingly obvious that Big Boi is the real genius of this group, how and when did the "Andre 3000 is the more talented half of OutKast" narrative even start?

iirc, like even before Speakerboxxx/The Love Below dropped, there was these lead-up of like alt-mags and fashion mags and rock crits freaking the fuck out because Andre listened to the Hives and dressed like a dandy fop and talked about space bullshit and played guitar and was a reclusive studio hermit and did fashion spreads and tons of disingenuous "OMG HE'S THE BLACK THOM YORKE" bullshit. Even though Speakerboxxx was like >>>>> Andre's half, it was easy to go along with it for a long time since "Hey Ya" was such an event record.

But when and how did this all begin?

well he was always the more overtly wacky one, right? more of an attention-grabber?

since he was harder to categorize, i feel that's why ppl put him on a pedestal

i'm not sure WHEN it began, but i think it's easy to see how rock critics would gravitate towards andre as opposed to big boi

also i'm not ready to say that big boi is THE_REAL_GENIUS or whatever -- like, if andre was sentenced by a judge to making a RAP album right now, i'm willing to bet that it might end up being better than 'left foot'

I have no authority to posit this, but I think there's something nostalgic, or familiar about Big Boi's excellence -- like obviously very creative, but he's also speaking to a history of music and excavating earlier sounds and reframing them, so there's something instantly recognizable about him and maybe that takes a little more time to realize how genius it actually is. Andre's style always seemed more overtly out-there, and at first glance maybe the more interesting voice between the two of them -- but subtlety is winning out in the end?

I mean, I hate to frame it in this way, but it seemed a lot of the media latched onto the "this Andre 3000 guy really like white people music" bit for a minute.

i still feel like andre is way less consistent than big boi but has higher highs. there's no single big boi verse on the record that's as captivating as andre on "royal flush" imo.

i think pretty much what's happened with big boi's career narrative in terms of critics is like

in the 2000s, it was prob easy to lump big boi in with all of the popular southern gangster rappers that were popping off at that time, and obv there were tons of them -- by contrast, andre was something different, he was listening to the hives and dressing like a dandy fop

now, we have a ton of rappers listening to grizzly bear and dressing like dandy fops, whereas big boi, by contrast, is a southern gangster rapper, of which there aren't very many popping off at this time -- the tables have sort of been turned on him, and now ppl are all "yeah, a southern rap record we can get behind! remember this shit!"

that is sort of the obvious ilx-approved reason, but is that the real reason? xp

Big Boi is pretty adventurous in his own right and this album proves it, which means he's pretty much the perfect partner for Andre. But it's the chemistry between the two that makes the best records - Aquenimi and Stankonia are better albums than Luscious Left Foot. It's only when the press and the fans started viewing them as oppositional that the Outkast rot set in.
