I liked Idlewild - see above youtube clips - but come on, its a stinker compared to ATLiens.
Personally I don't see that much of a difference between Get Crunk and Hustle Blood expect one has Jon shouting on it and the other has Foxx do that smooth singinginginging.

"Back-Up Plan" is changing my life
― HI DERE, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
Have you started designing elaborate back-ups plans in case of mise en abyme back-up plan failure?
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)
Playing that song then seeing Inception was some crazy unintentional synergy.
Also you guys are just looking for flaws and that's why you're complaining about "Follow Us", right?
― HI DERE, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)
I love "Follow Us," fwiw, mointbt (my opinion is not to be trusted)
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:44 (fifteen years ago)
btw, fave track atm is def "Fo Yo Sorrows" (shocka!)
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)
mine too i think, but ive only listened to this once
― the burn & shipley (k3vin k.), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)
"Fo Yo Sorrows" has always felt kind of awkward and blah to me :(

just thinking re: "Theme Song" but how superficial does your relationship have to be if you're dating a guy and his reassurances that you've got your very own ringtone in his phone comfort you?
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)
i smoked a joint with some friends and put on 'fo yo sorrows' the other day and everyone just broke into hysterical laughter at hearing the hook. not that it's bad, moment of simultaneous hilarity and musical brilliance imo

i love fo yo sorrows
really feelin back up plan too
im not in love w this record but 4 real seeing big boi tonite was, despite not being a transcendent thing, really really really graet
― blap...tremendo (deej), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)
graet enough to be worth paying $99, for two seats, in an arena, to see him support T-Pain and Ne-Yo next week?
― oh sh!t a ¯\⎝⏠___⏠⎠/¯ (sic), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:52 (fifteen years ago)
well ne-yo's pretty great live too (never seen t-pain) so i'm leaning towards yes
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:57 (fifteen years ago)
If I'd liked any other Ne-Yo songs beyond Put Your Hands Up and Back Like That it would be easier, but doubt I'd make it through T-Pain anyway.
It's two nights after an LCD/Hot Chip double-header, and the night before Goldfrapp, all with work the next day...
― oh sh!t a ¯\⎝⏠___⏠⎠/¯ (sic), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
Isn't T-Pain live basically a massive ridiculous spectacle to diguise the fact that he isn't actually singing?
― Matt DC, Monday, 19 July 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)
that does make it easier, ditch lcd/hot chip/goldfrapp and see these 3
i'd totally be interested in seeing t-pain live
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)
Having seen T-Pain live, I can tell you he can sing and he can sing well!
― i'm gonna need a +1 so me & a friend can kick you in the balls (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)
I saw T-Pain once and he totally performed live vocals and is generally a pretty entertaining performer w/o a lot of bells and whistles. that was 3 years ago, though, his stage show may have changed since then. xpost
― magic ksh (some dude), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)
does T Pain use autotune live (obviously it doesn't work the same way)? seems like he can actually sing based on that song Keep Goin' from his last album....

So, this is actually serious question despite the "hilarious," internet-snarky way I'm going to ask it.
Since it's become achingly obvious that Big Boi is the real genius of this group, how and when did the "Andre 3000 is the more talented half of OutKast" narrative even start?
iirc, like even before Speakerboxxx/The Love Below dropped, there was these lead-up of like alt-mags and fashion mags and rock crits freaking the fuck out because Andre listened to the Hives and dressed like a dandy fop and talked about space bullshit and played guitar and was a reclusive studio hermit and did fashion spreads and tons of disingenuous "OMG HE'S THE BLACK THOM YORKE" bullshit. Even though Speakerboxxx was like >>>>> Andre's half, it was easy to go along with it for a long time since "Hey Ya" was such an event record.
But when and how did this all begin?
― coordinating shit is my man Wave Chillken (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)
well he was always the more overtly wacky one, right? more of an attention-grabber?
― titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)
since he was harder to categorize, i feel that's why ppl put him on a pedestal
― titchyschneiderhouserules (s1ocki), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not sure WHEN it began, but i think it's easy to see how rock critics would gravitate towards andre as opposed to big boi
also i'm not ready to say that big boi is THE_REAL_GENIUS or whatever -- like, if andre was sentenced by a judge to making a RAP album right now, i'm willing to bet that it might end up being better than 'left foot'
― J0rdan S., Friday, 30 July 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)
I have no authority to posit this, but I think there's something nostalgic, or familiar about Big Boi's excellence -- like obviously very creative, but he's also speaking to a history of music and excavating earlier sounds and reframing them, so there's something instantly recognizable about him and maybe that takes a little more time to realize how genius it actually is. Andre's style always seemed more overtly out-there, and at first glance maybe the more interesting voice between the two of them -- but subtlety is winning out in the end?
― Mordy, Friday, 30 July 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
was it alfred that brought up neil young wrt to andre? or did that not happen? some artists just use their massive capital to fuck around -- it's kind of just a lack of self-control i think, not necessarily a repudiation of their genius
― J0rdan S., Friday, 30 July 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, I hate to frame it in this way, but it seemed a lot of the media latched onto the "this Andre 3000 guy really like white people music" bit for a minute.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
i still feel like andre is way less consistent than big boi but has higher highs. there's no single big boi verse on the record that's as captivating as andre on "royal flush" imo.
xp

xpost, that's exactly what I was talking about!
― coordinating shit is my man Wave Chillken (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 30 July 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)
i think pretty much what's happened with big boi's career narrative in terms of critics is like
in the 2000s, it was prob easy to lump big boi in with all of the popular southern gangster rappers that were popping off at that time, and obv there were tons of them -- by contrast, andre was something different, he was listening to the hives and dressing like a dandy fop
now, we have a ton of rappers listening to grizzly bear and dressing like dandy fops, whereas big boi, by contrast, is a southern gangster rapper, of which there aren't very many popping off at this time -- the tables have sort of been turned on him, and now ppl are all "yeah, a southern rap record we can get behind! remember this shit!"
― J0rdan S., Friday, 30 July 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
that is sort of the obvious ilx-approved reason, but is that the real reason? xp

Sounds right. All these Neil Young threads lately blur.
― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 July 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
Big Boi is pretty adventurous in his own right and this album proves it, which means he's pretty much the perfect partner for Andre. But it's the chemistry between the two that makes the best records - Aquenimi and Stankonia are better albums than Luscious Left Foot. It's only when the press and the fans started viewing them as oppositional that the Outkast rot set in.
― Matt DC, Friday, 30 July 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
Actually, I was referring to Andre 3000 when making the Neil Young comparison, J0rdan.

― balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 July 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I should have elaborated on that a bit - my guess would be that Andre started believing his own hype, hence The Love Below, which is a monumentally self-indulgent record.
