yeah i haven't heard it at all but i'm ready to backlash against the backlash

there's a bit of a dip for me between You Aint No DJ and Shine Blockas
^^^^^^, and "Lookin' 4 Ya" would've been a nice change of pace, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Re: That theory of Tracy Chapman, based on nothing other than her live and studio renditions of "O Holy Night," maybe she should have made all concert albums.

because of the enthusiasm in this thread i broke down and bought a copy. i was a huge fan of 'Kast a while back, but not as much Speakerboxx/Love Below. what's the production/Boi's flow like in relation to his Outkast work? and moreso is this gonna make me not wanna listen to other music for a week?
― San Te, Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
big boi's flow is big boi's flow for the most part, it's not a real break with how he's rapped his whole career.
― hot dub grime machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
cool. well i ain't picked it up yet but i'm lookin' forward to it
― San Te, Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
WOW.
This is hot fire. like this is nothing like i expected it might sound like, in a major good way. the production is so expansive and awesome...can't really do this album justice with words other than it just FEELS like a party.
i put off getting this mostly as I was in an east coast mood these last few weeks but this is welcome, most welcome.
― San Te, Thursday, 15 July 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

its got buzzsaw synths, a clean toned higher melodic line, thumping drums - these are all trademarks of his style. doesn't sound to me like it would be out of place on Crunk Juice, tbh. what do you hear about it that's unusual?
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
One Night Stand is a bit similar
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)
xp "Its got buzzsaw synths, a clean toned higher melodic line, thumping drums" could refer to 65-75% of what's on pop/hip hop/rnb radio for over a decade; that's a bit of a broad brush. For the sake of your argument, if I compare Get Crunk (which has some of the same DNA)to Hustle Blood the former has a great deal more subtlety, depth, sinew, ominous grind and delicacy to my ears.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbzeGW5r9uUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ7LUH39OmIYMMV I guess, but I'm of the opinion that this is the best production I've heard from Jon in years.

1 night stand feels like hustle blood's shadow maybe

don't get me wrong it's a good production, def the best thing I've heard of his in years too. I dunno what subtley, depth, sinew, ominous grind and delicacy mean in terms of the actual musical elements involved tbh. If you mean the synths are processed and compressed a particularly different way and the drums are programmed in a really strange way or something, I dunno, I don't hear it. I don't hear anything that unusual in the song itself, its made up of the usual elements of modern hip hop and nothing strikes me as particularly uncharacteristic - and if I was using a bit of a broad brush it's because Jon's not the most idiosyncratic/unique producer out there to begin with! He's always fit right in with other stuff on the radio.
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
I only brought up One Night Stand because it has roughly the same tempo, similar synth sounds (a bed of buzzier ones providing the support for chirpier, cleaner melodic lines), the female chorus, etc.
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)
buzz or chirp under the influence of drank
― hot dub grime machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)
um, I don't mean to suggest that he's using a hurdy-gurdy or doing anything super innovative musically here or even that it's a particularly unusual song. I'm just saying that it doesn't sound like Lil' Jon production and it also is fucking great, not that those are necessarily independent traits.Subtle, deep, sinuous, ominous and delicate are words I would use to describe the song, not the drum machine. I dunno the last time anybody called Jon "subtle" but it fits here.
― i'm gonna need a +1 so me & a friend can kick you in the balls (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:59 (fifteen years ago)
That would be dope, though, if Lil Jon made a beat w a hurdy-gurdy.
― swvl, Thursday, 15 July 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
keiji haino and lil jon present... crunk juice 2
― original bgm, Friday, 16 July 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)
jon's always been a versatile producer when he wants to be, maybe nothing particularly along the lines of 'hustle blood' springs to mind but it's nothing surprising to remark on really
― r|t|c, Friday, 16 July 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)
something abt u calling him jon there is really making me lol
― zvookster, Friday, 16 July 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
haha i have no idea why i did that

He sure as hell didn't in 2003-04 (and then he probably only did so after that because other people copied him so much).
― Mister AOR (The Reverend), Friday, 16 July 2010 07:08 (fifteen years ago)
Night Night is the clunker in here for me, the Joi section is so so cringeworthy.
― Matt DC, Friday, 16 July 2010 08:32 (fifteen years ago)
I like that bit. It's kinda ridiculous sure, but in a fun OTT way.
― Number None, Friday, 16 July 2010 10:21 (fifteen years ago)
second listen, loving this even more.
(p.s.: am I really the only one here who liked Idlewild?)
― San Te, Friday, 16 July 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
I liked Idlewild - see above youtube clips - but come on, its a stinker compared to ATLiens.
Personally I don't see that much of a difference between Get Crunk and Hustle Blood expect one has Jon shouting on it and the other has Foxx do that smooth singinginginging.

"Back-Up Plan" is changing my life
― HI DERE, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
Have you started designing elaborate back-ups plans in case of mise en abyme back-up plan failure?
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)
Playing that song then seeing Inception was some crazy unintentional synergy.
Also you guys are just looking for flaws and that's why you're complaining about "Follow Us", right?
― HI DERE, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)
I love "Follow Us," fwiw, mointbt (my opinion is not to be trusted)
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:44 (fifteen years ago)
btw, fave track atm is def "Fo Yo Sorrows" (shocka!)
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)
mine too i think, but ive only listened to this once
― the burn & shipley (k3vin k.), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

just thinking re: "Theme Song" but how superficial does your relationship have to be if you're dating a guy and his reassurances that you've got your very own ringtone in his phone comfort you?
― Mordy, Sunday, 18 July 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)
i smoked a joint with some friends and put on 'fo yo sorrows' the other day and everyone just broke into hysterical laughter at hearing the hook. not that it's bad, moment of simultaneous hilarity and musical brilliance imo

im not in love w this record but 4 real seeing big boi tonite was, despite not being a transcendent thing, really really really graet
― blap...tremendo (deej), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)
graet enough to be worth paying $99, for two seats, in an arena, to see him support T-Pain and Ne-Yo next week?
― oh sh!t a ¯\⎝⏠___⏠⎠/¯ (sic), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:52 (fifteen years ago)
well ne-yo's pretty great live too (never seen t-pain) so i'm leaning towards yes
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 19 July 2010 07:57 (fifteen years ago)
If I'd liked any other Ne-Yo songs beyond Put Your Hands Up and Back Like That it would be easier, but doubt I'd make it through T-Pain anyway.
It's two nights after an LCD/Hot Chip double-header, and the night before Goldfrapp, all with work the next day...
― oh sh!t a ¯\⎝⏠___⏠⎠/¯ (sic), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
Isn't T-Pain live basically a massive ridiculous spectacle to diguise the fact that he isn't actually singing?
― Matt DC, Monday, 19 July 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)
that does make it easier, ditch lcd/hot chip/goldfrapp and see these 3
i'd totally be interested in seeing t-pain live
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 19 July 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)
Having seen T-Pain live, I can tell you he can sing and he can sing well!
