TURD THROWER.

Bahahahaha

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 15 July 2010 11:00 (fifteen years ago)

GG Allin tribute band?

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 July 2010 11:02 (fifteen years ago)

Any act whose name has the word "fuck" or "shit" in it. I'm too old for that type of "edginess".

Any act whose name has more than four words. "I just bought the new album by I Love You But My Panda Is Gay" is not a sentence I ever want to say out loud.

Tuomas, Thursday, 15 July 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

LOL! I would totally be in a joke band called I Love You But My Panda Is Gay.

sarahel, Thursday, 15 July 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

A friend recommended me a band called Volapük but I can't listen to them because every time I read it I think "vomit puke".

Maybe they are but y'know

Big "a-doy" one that I'm shocked hasn't wound up here yet: Limp Bizkit.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

There are plenty of other, more credible reasons to write off Limp Bizkit.

But the name is a pretty adequate map of the territory, you have to admit.

Hurrah for Alex' Pissed Jeans loving.

For me, they reignited that whole Flipper, Fang, Killdozer flame with their debut. Their second one was, erm, toilet but "King of Jeans" nails it.

Hilarious existential sarcasm.

Would love to see them live. Any good?

new reviews at Onion's AV club:

* Carissa's Wierd A
* The Innocence Mission B+
* Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse B-
* School Of Seven Bells C

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 16 July 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse" sounds like an 80s Saturday morning cartoon.

I think Volapük is a decent band name, at least if you know what "volapük" is.

Pleasantly surprised.

tUnE yArDs took the cake for me. also any "female name" "and the" "quirky object" theme: marina and the diamonds, florence and the machine, etc.

Apparently there's a a band called "Rapeman", inspired by a manga of the same name. Can't imagine ever buying their records (or the manga, for that matter).

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 October 2010 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

If you were into the Wax Trax scene of the 80s & 90s, you owned those Rapeman EPs.

Hugo Stiglitz, a rich young man in search of romance & adventure (Pillbox), Thursday, 28 October 2010 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

Tuomas, they were Steve Albini's next band after Big Black split up. It was quite a controversial name at the time, or at least it was a bit of an issue when they visited the UK. I went to see them at Leeds Polytechnic and iirc, that gig only just went ahead after threats by the student union to pull it. Outside the venue there was a sizeable student protest and Albini did have to answer questions about the name in every single interview that I ever read. Was never all that comfortable about the name myself tbh and mostly went to the show on account of the other two groups on the bill (Band of Susans and Dinosaur Jr.).

yeah, it's true. those dudes copped all their good ideas from the first few big black records.

but christ, "rapeman". tried to be okay with the name, still love the records, but christ.

Interesting, what was his justification for the name then?

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 October 2010 09:58 (fifteen years ago)

so many already mentioned above. floetry ffs. kill: rapeman, tUnE yArDs, carissa's wierd, eyehategod, clap your hands say yeah, toad the wet sprocket, the pains of being pure at heart, gastunk, fuck buttons (who i love despite their awful awful name), uh huh her, cunninglynguists, racoo-oo-oon, someone still loves you boris yeltsin, on! air! library!, aids wolf, natalie portman's shaved head, cute is what we aim for, dananananakroyd, does it offend you, yeah?, hoobastank, pocahaunted, gorky's zygotic mynci, casiotone for the painfully alone, ...and you will know us by the trail of dead, dan le sac vs scroobius pip, gay witch abortion, umphrey's mcgee, my cat is an alien, oOoOOo, you say party! we say die onstage!, limp bizkit

also kill some more:

flobots
my chemical romance
sixpence none the richer
save ferris
gogogo airheart
poopshovel
basically any contemporary band with a name evoking hazy summer memories

somebody mentioned black tape for a blue girl. really? always thought that was a lovely name. never heard the band.

naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Thursday, 28 October 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

IIRC it was just some stuff about how it was solely a reference to the manga strip, and how bizarre that strip was, and that the name wasn't really a big deal for them. xp

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Thursday, 28 October 2010 10:16 (fifteen years ago)

haha @ poopshovel btw
