The idea that the Vonnegut chorus is remotely out of place on a album where one of the track begins with fucking grunge guitar is ridiculous. If he actually sounded like one of the dudes from Wheatus or Blink 182 I'd understand but it's a pretty nondescript voice. If it was a sample or just some session musician guy no one would bat an eyelid.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)
I mean I know Whiney is bending over backwards not to look like a corny indie fuck here but there's such a thing as trying too hard.

the guitar gets buried by hard beats pretty quickly though, and that chorus is unavoidable
If it was a sample or just some session musician guy no one would bat an eyelid.
as far as i knew it was just some session musician guy, it still sticks out as being all radio rock (compared to every other singer on the record)
― emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)
too be fair, i'll still take a Vonnneggutt chorus over the roots fucking with blog-rock any day
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)
yeah when i heard it i had zero idea it was some dude from vonegutt and i still don't really know who vonegutt is.
it sounds like bad active rock radio type singing which i imagine is exactly what vonegutt is.
― hot dub grime machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, no one is purporting to know/care who vonnegutt is.
i'm pretty sure they're big boi's fuzzbubble or spymob
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)
Yep. Fourth google result mentions "Purple Ribbon Records Artist Vonnegutt".

"Here's an unlikely recipe: Take classic emcee skills and dope lyrics, add pop sensibility and rock energy. Stir. Sprinkle a dash of inspiration from a literary icon. What do you get? Vonnegutt."
hahahahahha

― verybooming post pavillion (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)
RONG, that is easily in my top ten. I think, as of right now, "Night Night" is the weakest link for me.
Not sure if there has already been talk about the "Shine Blockas" remix with Bun B and Project Pat on the deluxe edition, but it rubs me the wrong way by being SUCH a lazy "remix". I mean, it essentially just pastes in Bun and Pat's verses, leaving Big's original verse in. Bun's verse is killer though.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)
I'm glad you've finally heard a remix on a rap record
― verybooming post pavillion (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)
I know you really enjoy hating on me at every opportunity, but this one is even lazier than most.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

― verybooming post pavillion (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)
I was just disappointed in the remix is all, seeing Bun listed on there is what made me shell out the 2 extra bucks for the "deluxe version" in the first place.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)
they took out gucci's verse too!
― verybooming post pavillion (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 15 July 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I meant to mention that part. I just felt like that song could have had such a great remix by keeping Gucci and tossing in those two other guys.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 15 July 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)
i never know why songs have like 3 dif remix versions. I'd like to hear just one long version with everyone, hahaha
― verybooming post pavillion (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 15 July 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)
"The Train Pt 2" is a good song! "Follow Us" is by default the worst song because of the Worst Chorus Of The Year.

there's a bit of a dip for me between You Aint No DJ and Shine Blockas
^^^^^^, and "Lookin' 4 Ya" would've been a nice change of pace, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Re: That theory of Tracy Chapman, based on nothing other than her live and studio renditions of "O Holy Night," maybe she should have made all concert albums.

because of the enthusiasm in this thread i broke down and bought a copy. i was a huge fan of 'Kast a while back, but not as much Speakerboxx/Love Below. what's the production/Boi's flow like in relation to his Outkast work? and moreso is this gonna make me not wanna listen to other music for a week?
― San Te, Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
big boi's flow is big boi's flow for the most part, it's not a real break with how he's rapped his whole career.
― hot dub grime machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

― San Te, Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
WOW.
This is hot fire. like this is nothing like i expected it might sound like, in a major good way. the production is so expansive and awesome...can't really do this album justice with words other than it just FEELS like a party.
i put off getting this mostly as I was in an east coast mood these last few weeks but this is welcome, most welcome.

its got buzzsaw synths, a clean toned higher melodic line, thumping drums - these are all trademarks of his style. doesn't sound to me like it would be out of place on Crunk Juice, tbh. what do you hear about it that's unusual?
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
One Night Stand is a bit similar
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 July 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)
xp "Its got buzzsaw synths, a clean toned higher melodic line, thumping drums" could refer to 65-75% of what's on pop/hip hop/rnb radio for over a decade; that's a bit of a broad brush. For the sake of your argument, if I compare Get Crunk (which has some of the same DNA)to Hustle Blood the former has a great deal more subtlety, depth, sinew, ominous grind and delicacy to my ears.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbzeGW5r9uUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ7LUH39OmIYMMV I guess, but I'm of the opinion that this is the best production I've heard from Jon in years.
