to be fair it was JD/NO vs. Bowie and I rate NO high over both JD and DB.

I used to have a lot of love for NO and I guess some of the big singles still reach a spot but they fill me with inertia nowadays in a way that Bowie never has

a travesty, esp relative to the east, where decency won out. beach boys beating can was inevitable (if tragic), couldn't care less about abba vs. biggie, slightly cheered by the stones' victory over CCR, but fucking useless fucking JD/NO over bowie just steams my hams. the day i never again walk into every shop in town and hear unknown pleasures every fucking day will be the best day ever. i tell you true.

my guess is you'd like the mid-period stuff the most from what you're saying - the period where they were no longer shameless American R&B copyists (really some of that early stuff is SO EGREGIOUS - sometimes good/great, sometimes awful) but before they'd morphed into blues-rock libertines, basically the period where most of their interesting ideas were coming from Brian Jones. Their psych phase is hilarious, but has lots of great tunes.
