Not saying that if you listen you'll like them, maybe slightly alter the general consensus that it's dull frat rock.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Just because I feel like contributing to this thread again, I will note that my coworker with the Dave Matthews-related tatoo on her ankle has fairly eclectic tastes - her other favorite bands include Korn, Radiohead, *NSync/solo JC, Rage Against the Machine, and the Beatles.

Sadly, I can't stand any of those bands, either. (With the exception of a little *NSync.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't see it as JUST dull frat rock. like i said before, there a lot of rich, suburban granola hippies who also love DMB.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

fairly eclectic tastes

Not from where I sit!

maybe slightly alter the general consensus that it's dull frat rock

Or alternately confirm it...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Take it back!

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'd also rather listen to bad than dull. With bad, there's always the unintentional comedy factor to provide entertainment (i.e. Limp Bizkit videos). With dull, you just don't give a fuck at all.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

She also likes the Cure, Ned.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That still doesn't make her tastes much more eclectic!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, for a non-ILMmy kind of person, I think they are.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people don't like both Korn and the Beatles, Ned; be a little fair.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, the way I'm thinking, it'll become more common with time (in a certain 'the Beatles are the greatest ever MAN -- and I grew up with Korn!' sense).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a gay faggot and i want to suck every man's dick in the world. I am half way to my goal. Who will be next. It could be you or you. But you wont know cause i will sneak up on you in the middle of the night and suck it. But the bottom line of this letter is that i really want to suck dave mathews dick.

-- dan creed (drock_1...), May 10th, 2004 2:11 PM. (later)

that's amazingly funny.

I'm halfway to my goal.

im gonna use that.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Having thus far resisted the all-consuming vortex that is the DMB thread, I hereby surrender with the following shameful revealation:
my EX thinks that Dave Matthews is REALLY HOT!! And she thinks he LOOKS LIKE ME!! Oh, and for the record, UR ALL *STILL* GAY.

briania, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was 18 I went to the US, and DMB were playing somewhere in the town I was in. Every Taxi we used - radio talked about it. It was even on the news. That annoyed me...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not a revelation, just very unfortunate.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess so Allison. I just realised that I know a Johm McAteer, though probably not the man who started all this. It just struck me as odd that a gig was a news item. Weren't we invading anywhere?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And I DON'T look like DM, not at all! I may occasionally sing a bit like a muppet, though.

briania, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It wouldn't be entirely bad if you did. He doesn't sing like a muppet.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I find the "muppet" comment muppetist. Not all muppets sing alike. Compare the dulcet tones of Ms Piggy to the gutt-bucket blues growl of Rowlf the Dog, for example.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly offtopic...would he sound better if he switched from his "kermit t frog" vocals to a more "cookie-monster"-esque vocal. Y'know, like a nu-metal thing?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oscar the Grouch might be a good compromise - a little raw and rough without being too Cookie Monster.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

or if he sang like Bert and went out on another solo tour. Wait, then he'd be....

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread could use a couple thousand more posts.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is being dull worse than being bad? Just wondering what the difinitive ILM opinion is on this. I'd rather listen to bad than dull...

"Bad" is a thousand times more preferrable than "dull".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

just wondering--how many pages into a "Dave Matthews Band" google search does it take to get to this thread?

by the way, i just want to say that i'm still fairly new to the board and feel deeply grateful for the fact that many of you have lumped DMB together with other mediocre and annoying bands i hate like Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Phish, John Mayer, Hootie and Blowfish and U2...it's not everyday that i get to meet such great people such as yourselves.....*sniff*

okay, now i'm getting emotional.....

waxyjax (waxyjax), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly don't understand how it can be perceived as dull. Are we speaking post Crash?

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

EVERYONE LISTEN TO BOREDOMS AND SELL ME DRUGS

just wondering--how many pages into a "Dave Matthews Band" google search does it take to get to this thread?

I searched for -Dave Matthews Band- and could not find this thread in the results.

Then I searched -I Love Dave Matthews Band- and still did not find it.

I then searched -Dave Matthews Band hated- and only found some references to this thread, but not the thread itself.

Finally, searching -"Dave Matthews Band : Name your reasons"- and found four tenuous references to this thread, but not the thread itself.

This thread does not exist. Please delete.

Any funny crap?

GET TO THA' (PRICE) CHOPPA!!!!!!!! ROFFLE!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i did a quick search under "dave matthews hate"

nothing too funny, but i found an interesting review on one of his albums...here are some quotes:

http://www.ironminds.com/ironminds/issues/010321/tunes.shtml
For these reasons, the Dave Matthews Band has been successfully filling a niche that’s existed just as long as indistinguishable radio pop — Earnest Rock. And although this niche can make you rich, fat and happy, it’s much more distressing than anything ’NSync could think up.
Earnest Rock was the great unwritten-about musical trend of the ’90s — mostly because rock critics couldn’t summon the interest to dissect such blindingly mediocre records. Earnest Rock, as performed by groups like Hootie and the Blowfish and Counting Crows, thrives as a reaction to the overblown tendencies of the musical extremes elsewhere in the marketplace. While this brand of music might be more “meaningful” than, say, Destiny’s Child, it’s also achingly dull in comparison to the catharsis and passion fueling a Nirvana or a PJ Harvey (or a Le Tigre or a Yo La Tengo)....

...It can’t even be discussed on its own merits because, really, it can’t exist by itself. It’s Plan B. It’s just there. Which is worse, much worse, than sucking.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"At its worst, Earnest Rock congratulates itself for its sober, conventional feel and presents its timid predictability as a mark of authenticity. It’s for people scared of Moby."

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I searched "Dave Matthews hate", and found this thread's parallel universe sibling:

Subject: RE: Dave Matthews Obsession
From: Dave is AMAZING
Date: 09-Oct-03
Message: ok, first of all, a lot of you people who are dave bashing all are hypocritical asses. Don't give me that crap about dave matthews being a racist and not having any talent. Why don't you get your damn facts straight before YOU start sounding IGNORANT...oh...wait...i think it's a little too late for that. Dave was born in south africa and like most of the normal people on this message board said....dave's music comes from the experience of hearing the music of south africa. and what's the crap about having all his "black" members stand behind him on stage...well..let me give you a little wake up call......go to a dave concert asses and take a look. he steps away and lets boyd (the guy on the electric fiddle) take the stage. So YET AGAIN you are WRONG. I am not going to bash marilyn manson or whatever music you listen to. What i am going to say is Dave is a brillian musician, and songwriter. Ever listen to his lyrics? they have so much MEANING to them....got that... M E A N I N G! So take a chance and listen to his music before you go and start with the dave hate.....cut the crap.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

.. with relatively few grammar & spelling mistakes.

Alas, this thread shall never die when we are belssed by the likes of:
"go to a dave concert asses and take a look."

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you forgot to include "faget" in there.

ICP IS THE BEST BANF

I suppose "AntiChrist Superstar", or whatever music I listen to, has no M E A N I N G .?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

HIPPIES RULE, DMB is awesome, you all that "hate" DMB are just jealous that he is a successful musician, and made something out of his life unlike you.

Ihatepeoplethataresorryforthemselves, Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought hippies were supposed to be all passive, peace-loving and non-judgemental! Wow...I'm so disillusioned now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So wait if people hate on us by telling us that we hate DMB because we're jealous then that means that they're hating on us because they're jealous, right? They are convicted by their own logic, you are Colly Cibber and I claim my five pounds

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Things I am Clearly Just Jealous of:

1) Dave Matthews Band
2) Sexually Transmitted Diseases
3) Pitchforkmedia (This one might actually be true)
4) The weather in Chicago
5) Jeff Probst
6) Middle English
7) The thieves that broke into my car and stole 10 recently purchased indie rock CDs with almost no resale value

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i do like ICP more than DMB.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate hate.
where's my coffee?

eedd, Saturday, 15 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone gets so caught up in being different that they stop liking music based on what appeals to them. If bands like kittie really tickled your fancy and you found the latest justin timberlake song really appealing, you may be hesitant to express your feelings about the song. I really hate when people are so insecure with themselves that they have to pretend to be some1 else to save their image. so in all honesty, are you saying that you hate dmb because you genuinley dislike his music, or just to be different from all the 'yuppies'.

HOWEVER- if you are looking for some songs to download, do these-
nething by ani defranco, creedence clearwater revival, led zepplin
taylor/rodeo clowns-jack johnson
i believe in a thing called love- the darkness
meant to live- switchfoot
so much to say- dmb
so good- better than ezra (FUCKMEYEAHTHATSAGOODBAND)

haha- those are like my favorite bands and i dont care if u love them or hate them- those bands are what i love to listen to

erin, Monday, 17 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Our musical tastes may not match, but our musical attitudes do. Yay Erin!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG PLEEEEEASE tell me more about this band "The Darkness" has ne1 herd of them?

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"are you saying that you hate dmb because you genuinley dislike his music"

Yes, they are unexcusably bland and uninteresting to my ears.
