Only the label could give you the actual answers because none of the methods for sales reporting (soundscans etc) are very accurate IMO.
But you can bet it's thousands and not tens of thousands.
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 July 2010 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks Nate!
Still, that just seems so incredibly low! I guess I just automatically assume that when people are praising a record on ILM and I see a positive review in a big name place or a positive mention on some decent blogs or whatever that the record is "big," but it's only big in the context of a relatively small community.
― ksh, Sunday, 4 July 2010 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
Nate how many albums does your band sell?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 July 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)
I remember years ago reading or hearing somewhere that Sick Of It All considered it 'making it big' when one of their major label records sold 20,000 worldwide.
Speaking of metal sales on smaller labels, what's the royalty return for artists like? I'm just gonna assume right off the bat they make the bulk of their dough from touring/merch/day jobs. Do metal labels work on a similar profit split model to the likes of Touch and Go et al?
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Sunday, 4 July 2010 20:44 (sixteen years ago)
there is a band playing in my basement right now and i swear they sound like a cross between rush and neurosis. very cool! genesis climber. from california.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)
That must be novel -- I don't imagine they get to play in many basements in California.

listening to black breath heavy breathing, one of few metal albums i've bought this year. love it to death, though it ain't a patch on their live show. not an ilm favorite i guess?
― good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, it is, at least with me. I've been raving about that band for some time now.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, i searched kinda quickly. found more complaining abt the vocals than drooling enthusiasm. :(
i usually don't like the hoarse hc/screamo thing much, but love the total effect on heavy breathing.

Also great to see Solar Anus mentioned here.

"Nate how many albums does your band sell?"
Our last album is out of print and our next one isn't out yet. ;)
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 09:48 (fifteen years ago)
So basically that means we've been selling NONE. We don't even have shirts right now. I guess we're putting all our effort into the music. Merch is on my list of "things to do" though :)
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 09:49 (fifteen years ago)
I really like Black Breath as well FWIW.

ok since a few people on Mordy's Metal Listening Club - New Albums Every Monday (see link for the reason for this poll)asked this particular discussion to be moved to here
After aldo's picks we decided to have an ILM poll on worst 90s albums made by established metal bands, Alan N nominated shitloads and adrien chipped in + there's aldos 3 original picks from the club here is what we have so far:Candlemass - Chapter VINapalm Death - Harmony Corruption (1990)Iron Maiden -No Prayer for the Dying (1990)Iron Maiden - The X Factor (1995)Iron Maiden - Virtual XI (1998)Metallica - Load (1996)Metallica - ReLoad (1997)Anthrax - Stomp 442 (1995)Anthrax - Volume 8: The Threat Is Real (1998)Slayer - Divine Intervention (1994)Slayer - Undisputed Attitude (1996)Slayer - Diabolus in Musica (1998)Danzig - Blackacidevil (1996)Danzig - Satan's Child (1999)Judas Priest - JugulatorMotley Crue - Mötley Crüe (1994)Motley Crue - Generation Swine (1997)Testament - DemonicSkid Row - Subhuman RaceMegadeth - Cryptic Writings (1997)Megadeth - Risk (1999)
What else should be added? 90s albums by established metal bands only.Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)? That one was pretty much unlistenable right? If we need 2 polls then fair enough.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)
I forget who it was here who turned me on to Mar de Grises way back when, but I'm forever thankful, and their new album (out in september on Season of Mist), is excellent. The kind of classy Opeth/Katatonia combination that made Draining the Waterheart such a revelation, but with plenty of improvements.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 21:21 (fifteen years ago)
It was probably scott
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)
They've been writing me about US booking for years. I like them.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)
So any 90s bad albums by established metal bands to be added to the list?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
man anybody who likes metallic crust (or crusty metal, I don't know) - midtempo metal with thrashy breaks from the mid-nineties & plenty of "give the bassist a two-bar solo here" moments played by kids just looking to blow snot rockets needs to cop this Foul Stench discography CD. it has been amusing, entertaining, and rocking me for a month now. (it came it 2008 but I just took a chance on it with a big buy-three-get-one-free deal from goregiastic.) pretty trad solos a lot of the time, given the musical context - I don't know, I view these guys as a less grindy precursor to Foetopsy, and it's no secret how I feel about Foetopsy. how do you know if this is a band you might like? gentlemen: the track listing.
1. Jiz Mark 2. Call Me Evil 3. Creamator 4. So Fucking High 5. Foul Stench 6. Pinch A Loaf 7. Donor 8. Stone 9. Infected 10. The Funk 11. I Like Puss 12. Cock-Pit 13. Dill Pickle 14. Could It Be (She's Got a Cock) 15. Filth 16. Fuck the Life 17. Dethroned Emperor (Celtic Frost Cover) 18. You Are Nasty 19. Police State 20. You Want Me 21. We're Crazy 22. Black Death 23. Moshing Mother Fuckers 24. Shit Hole 25. Big Ass Boot 26. Let's Get Fucked Up 27. Fist Fucking
So fucking good.

― les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
in 2007, eleven years after the recordings collected on The Beginning, Foul Stench made an album that indicated where they were at now. I have not heard the album, but I feel its track listing is worth noting -- a band unafraid of growth!
1. Be Gone 2. Fake 3. Leech 4. Pack A Bowl 5. Lost 6. Damn Nation 7. Skull Fukd 8. Asshole 9. Singing About Pussy
― les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)
There's something to be said for single-mindedness. I don't know what it is, but somebody here probably does.

Anyone heard the new Sahg album? I'm halfway through it and pretty taken so far by its Dio-meets-Soundgarden-meets-NWOBHM grandstanding
― Penius / JZA (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 08:37 (fifteen years ago)
yeah this is great, you can probly disregard the Soundgarden mention aside from like one or two tracks maybe but I like this a whole lot. In fact I need to hear the whole Grand Magus new one just to have this year's obvious point of comparison at hand
― Penius / JZA (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)
Genesis Climber made me curious since it's an obscure Robotech reference. Found their website. It's fun.
Too bad they played Portland weeks ago not too far from my house.

I didn't know the new Sahg was out there already. Must hear it.

did we discuss this yet? it's a concordance of stats for metal-archives.com (a generally fantastic site imo) -- what visitors look at broken down by genre & what country the site's users are from -- stats people, you may get a big kick out of this -- I'm not even a stats guy but it's a really interesting chart to look at

now playing, btw, Helvet in Musta Peto, a comp from last year that is seriously among the best metal compilation albums I have ever owned - I got it from Bestial Burst during my "holy shit Bestial Burst is the best label out there" frenzy last year; it's such a lovingly curated comp, flows so well, gives several different looks that flow together nicely, and is kinda my #1 exhibit for black metal that's both reaching into new places & remaining true to the genre - I know the term "true" is loaded but if you run across it have a listen and you'll see what I mean. The Saturnian Mist track is especially fuckin hot
― les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
and the Ride for Revenge track, which is really, really long, like a mini-album within the album (it has three distinct parts, it's like a black metal take on those stitch-several-songs-into-one side-long things Genesis used to do)

your worst nightmare is happening. John Justen is helping with an ILM Alltime Best Ever Metal Tracks & ILM Alltime Best Ever Metal Albums email poll. Will start a noms thread shortly and will try keep mentions of it in here to a minimum so not to piss poll haters off. Will post the link in here once its up so your thread isn't spoiled. But please mr & mrs poll haters, please even consider nominating stuff you would like to see in it! In return i wont bug you!:)

i'm into ride for revenge. really dug the track "no saviour no return" off their last one. think I posted on here about it, even.
