Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

I have no idea on the quality of it, so please report back!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

Glenn doesn't have the time to do a poll just now (originally we were going to do an ILM decade poll BUT theres been so many decade polls so fuck that) but there has never been an ILM Metal/Hard Rock poll before.
I was thinking of a Best Metal/Hard Rock Songs Poll and a Best Metal Hard Rock Albums Poll so I'd be willing to do that IF someone else can do the number crunching. Glenn has kindly provided the software he uses to do all the polls, so if anyone can do it then please volunteer.

Glenn can answer any questions on the software etc.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

Wish I had time/energy to run the software myself. That said, I'd love to participate in the poll if anyone else can help.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

I really don't have it in me to tabulate another poll right now. It's a really time/life-consuming process.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

Why not just make it a discussion thread instead of another poll? u_u

ksh, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

love you for that ksh

Yeah I'm with these guys. Polls are meaningless. They are just bell curves of popular taste. That's the opposite of learning.

Nate Carson, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

I'd love a thread like that, as long as I don't get laughed out of it for repping for hair metal.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

dude point me at the people who laugh at you for repping for hair metal, and I will kill those people with my bare hands

Okay cool. It's just that every time I drop in on a metal thread, everyone's talking about this heavy, growly stuff from recent years that I know NOTHING about.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah well we're gonna keep right on talking about that stuff 'cause it kicks ass, don't get me wrong

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

haha

I actually like that Mantic Ritual record from last year, but only 'cos it sounds like the thrashy stuff I listened to in 1986 while I destroying my body trying to learn skateboard tricks. What else is new that sounds like that?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Why not just make it a discussion thread instead of another poll? u_u

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

hosting a discussion like that itt is just asking for a huge derail that would inevitably crowd out all discussion of new and upcoming records. needs to be hosted elsewhere imo

ksh, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

like in a poll?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

hah

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

well theres no poll if johnny wont do it. I dont think anyone else will volunteer.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

What kind of software does Glenn use? I mean, if it's largely automated, pretty much anyone could do it. All I do is plug people's votes into Excel and do the math in my head as I go along (which is probably only about 92% reliable).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

If we're gonna do this poll, why don't we at least wait until the current albums/tracks thing is a wrap?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

it would be ilxor. Noms would be open for 3 weeks so it will be over long before voting started nevermind results

johnny check your email

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

3 weeks for noms 3 weeks for voting means its 6 weeks before the tabulator has to do anything, i do the rest.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

guys can you start the thread so you can be talking about the poll on the thread I don't check to see if people are saying interesting things about heavy metal

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Saw the link. Looks complicated. :/

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

and i know johnny will like the idea of best metal trax as well as albums...

pollhaters like smithy dont need to vote but they can write about stuff they like when it charts. I thought last years 2009 poll thread had some good discussion.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

ok smithy

if johnny doesnt agree then i guess theres no poll so it wont be discussed further

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm out. For now. I might be ready to do one again in a few months (6 weeks isn't long enough away).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

no worries.
so smithy did you check out the free biggus diccus download?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

naw doesn't seem like my kinda thing

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

me neither but george on the hard rock thread said it was quite good

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

and yes i know that wont help you change your mind

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

delayed posting

ksh, Friday, 2 July 2010 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

The new Dawnbringer album (feat. Nachtmystium secret weapon Chris Black) is so fucking good, it's ridiculous. Traditional metal album of the year, by a mile.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 3 July 2010 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

Bruni has been raving to me about it. I need to hear that.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 3 July 2010 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

The new Zoroaster is fucking awesome. What other groups sound like this? Sort of heavy psych influenced, slightly shoey biker metal? I guess there's a crossover between some stoner bands like Kyuss and other Savanah bands and some doomers like Goat Snake. It's weird listening to a 'metal' group and thinking what does this remind me of? Oh yeah, Ride.

Titan are readying a new album for Relapse as well.

Duran (Doran), Saturday, 3 July 2010 12:36 (sixteen years ago)

I was wondering if Titan was actually gonna sign with Relapse. I met one of those dudes at the High on Fire/Priestess/Bison show and he was telling me about the new album - which was awesome news, because I loved the debut - but the Relapse deal was a vague possibility at that point.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Saturday, 3 July 2010 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I love that four track album from a few years back.

Got this yesterday: Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Brooklyn, NY’s TITAN.

TITAN, who have previously released material on Paradigms and Tee Pee Records, have recently completed work on a brand new full-length album titled Sweet Dreams. Sweet Dreams was recorded at Translator Audio in Brooklyn with engineer Brendan Tobin (MADE OUT OF BABIES, RED SPAROWES). An October 12th release date has been set and the album is available for pre-order at this location.

TITAN’s Josh Anzano commented on the new album; “"Sweet Dreams" has been the culmination of major urges welling up inside all of us to be a bit faster, a bit harder, a bit trippier and generally more aggro in our approach to writing, jamming out, and conceptualizing the songs and record as a whole. It's a lot tighter, but it's also a lot looser. We recorded with Brendan Tobin at his killer 'Translator Audio' studio in Brooklyn and we're pretty fucking stoked on the final results, and we hope that you are too!”

TITAN has confirmed an August 22nd New York show at Santos Party House, performing alongside SAVIOURS, PRIESTESS, HAMSOKEN, and more. Additional TITAN dates will be announced shortly.

Stay tuned to www.RELAPSE.com for forthcoming TITAN news / album release information. Additional information will be made available via TITAN MySpace page MySpace.com/Titanaut.

Duran (Doran), Saturday, 3 July 2010 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i got that email from Relapse too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 3 July 2010 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

From the Metal Listening Club thread:

id be very surprised if black metal was outselling death metal in the usa

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, June 27, 2010 5:36 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

i wonder who the biggest selling "doom" band in the US is and how much they sell? about 5k max?

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, June 27, 2010 5:40 PM (1 week ago)

Does anyone have any idea what kind of numbers smaller metal records do? Like what could something like, say, the new Ludicra expect to pull off?

ksh, Sunday, 4 July 2010 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

Only the label could give you the actual answers because none of the methods for sales reporting (soundscans etc) are very accurate IMO.

But you can bet it's thousands and not tens of thousands.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 July 2010 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks Nate!

Still, that just seems so incredibly low! I guess I just automatically assume that when people are praising a record on ILM and I see a positive review in a big name place or a positive mention on some decent blogs or whatever that the record is "big," but it's only big in the context of a relatively small community.

ksh, Sunday, 4 July 2010 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

Nate how many albums does your band sell?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 July 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

I remember years ago reading or hearing somewhere that Sick Of It All considered it 'making it big' when one of their major label records sold 20,000 worldwide.

Speaking of metal sales on smaller labels, what's the royalty return for artists like? I'm just gonna assume right off the bat they make the bulk of their dough from touring/merch/day jobs. Do metal labels work on a similar profit split model to the likes of Touch and Go et al?

there is a band playing in my basement right now and i swear they sound like a cross between rush and neurosis. very cool! genesis climber. from california.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

That must be novel -- I don't imagine they get to play in many basements in California.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

listening to black breath heavy breathing, one of few metal albums i've bought this year. love it to death, though it ain't a patch on their live show. not an ilm favorite i guess?

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, it is, at least with me. I've been raving about that band for some time now.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i searched kinda quickly. found more complaining abt the vocals than drooling enthusiasm. :(

i usually don't like the hoarse hc/screamo thing much, but love the total effect on heavy breathing.

Also great to see Solar Anus mentioned here.
