and i've been finding it harder to say that about any new techno recently.

i'm the complete opposite -- i'm finding techno to be very good lately! some stuff i've been feeling:

forward strategy group - combat codes (rawsome car-crusher techno, sounds as if neubauten ca "yu gung" released a record on downwards. i like how industrial influences are becoming more and more pronounced recently)
darko esser - songs for a real winter
tadeo - series 03
d knox - looking through your eyes
samuel l session - inner city dust (heavy mid 90s the advent style techno)
samuli kempii - kosmos ep
dj bone - my sunday 10"
dino sabatini - daughter of phorcys (the ghosts of old mika vainio midi sequences lurk in these trax)

then there's the sandwell district stuff, the last oni ayhun record, the terrance dixon record youtube'd above, the dvs1 thing (the b-side is even better btw), the brendan moeller thing on echochord, the excellent schermate label from italy -- just an overwhelming number of decent records coming out! and i'm sure just as many that i don't know about or have yet to discover. i think house and techno are becoming more distinct from each other again, techno trax are getting ruffer, more overdriven and industrial, taking influence from elsewhere (axis, sahko, fragile records, claude young, surgeon, early aphex, autechre, r&s etc) instead of relying on the same chain reaction/basic channel tropes, tempos are going up as house tempos are going down, you always read big european djs like steffi or tama sumo talking about a definite axis point in their sets where they will switch from house to techno as opposed to mixing it all together as they may've done maybe 2 or 3 or 4 years ago... maybe i'm talking out of my ass here and someone is gonna tell me that all those records are crap i dunno, but i'm honestly pretty excited about techno atm

new deepchord is amazing, theyve done a feelgood summer record! Literally the polar opposite of coldest season etc and the first dub techno record ive actually wanted to play out in aeons. BCN dub on constant rotation after coming back form sonar where I heard watery Jamie Jones tech houses version of summer a few too many times

the new Deepchord is a lot warmer and more varied than coldest season, haven't gotten a chance to listen to it enough yet, but i'm liking it a lot.

Hey (r1o natsume), totally agree with you! I love the way that techno has become more industrial as you say.. I run the Komisch label, which samuli kemppi's 'kosmos' ep is released on, so thanks for supporting us! It is also funny that this idea of 'industrial' is with us again.. peter van hoesen who also releases on Komisch is a big new beat fan and samuli has a background in 90s techno. maybe it's because we are all a bit older . .

Gota say I was pretty bummed about the state of techno in recent years untill I found October: http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2009/04/interview-october-caravan_16.html we interviewed him and he did a quality mix way back last year. He had that free moving kinda organic, raw flow where you didn't quite know what was gonna happen next when a genre full of people where just doing it so tracky and predictable. He's done loads of killer mixes since too...

Kyle Hall and Omar-S have been doing it for me too, no idea how they keep it so lo-fi and loose and keep that dance floor bump. Kassem Mosse has been sounding hot as well but I need to explore that more.

I've stated my great fondness for Richard Davis before on ILM, and likewise my excitement that he released a new EP recently. Having just acquired that EP ("What You Are" on his own offshoot label, Safer), I can say that this record is fabulous!

djkomisch, been loving the komisch releases so far.

i think whats perceived as an industrial boom has been helped hugely by the berghain factor but what seems to be a thread running through a lot of the producers is that they have come back to dance music from working in other soundscapey/ambient/experimental music after a few years away from the dancefloor (myself included). Personally I feel theres something about creating a more populis functional piece of music to be used in this setting thats a bit more instantly fulfilling though maybe thats my narcissistic impulses coming out

i think spending more and more time away from the internet and dance clubs has also made me feel 'eh' about much techno, but r1o, the FSG stuff is pretty good, am listening now. i also have been liking what is coming out on Rodz-Konez.

really enjoying the Dettmann album, and the Robert Hood as people have said (War In The Streets!) minimal techno so much fun now that it's irrelevant / out of the limelight.

the robert hood is also a pretty good listen, and i've been trying to find a ton of stuff that r1o listed but was relatively unsuccessful. an industrial techno revival sounds amazing tho. so far i've just noticed a massive acid comeback, but people tell me that tends to go in cycles and never really sticks around for too long.

As far as Wolf and Lamb go, its a well done combination of dub techno and deep house?

I listen to a lot from both sub genres (Luke Hess, Quantec, that kind of thing) and I like their style?

Its a lot sexier than what Sven Weisemann does, as an example.

found that milky disco 3 without much difficulty, and i think i like it better than the others so far! oneohtrix point never whaa? awesome. the opening leo zero track is unlike anything else i've heard by him, and it is excellent

In particular I was referring to the broader wolf+lamb label roster (incl. Zev, Gadi, Lee Curtiss, Soul Clap, etc.)
Certainly there's good stuff here and there (I don't know if Nicolas Jaar counts, but he's among the better of it) but I find so much of it to be totally dull and lifeless (and a lot of the stuff that isn't tends to become so after awhile). This is all to say, I guess, that I can't see how people can, at their parties for, instance, listen to this stuff all night.

I think the comparison with Sven Weisemann is a bit out of left field, they ultimately have very little in common. He makes great music to just sit back and relax to: restrained and elegant, whereas W+L is just, well, not.

I should probably check out the Urban Tribe and, when I can, put off buying the actress album finally.

actress is definitely going to be in the strong running for album of the year. it might also go down as being on the level of the first urban tribe album or it might be deeply overhyped. it's definitely better than the usual stuff that draws urban tribe comparisons (thomas fehlmann? sheesh) ... if urban tribe was like an intensely weeded-out detroit techno take on leftfield/IDM/downtempo 90s sound, actress is like an equivalent UK techno take on leftfield 00s dance music. i can definitely listen to it. again and again.

really, really feeling but with great trepidation: linkwood, firecracker, prime numbers, etc. good instincts and i like their sound but they are one more kaidi tatham collab away from turning into the 10s version of broken beat, which is exactly what all of this "micro-step" / new dubstep crap is too. it is good to see the association with actress and motor city drum ensemble, though like linkwood and firecracker he seems like he's sort of hibernating. also funny to see andres around - reminds me of trus'me because i'm still not sure if the last trus'me thing was actually a "black mahogani ii" style meltdown or just an amp fiddler style letdown

i'm totally with you on the robert johnson vol 4. what other comps has gerd janson done besides that one and the computer incarnations for world peace series? and i know next to nothing about his productions, any guidance on where to start with those?

and i think we were talking about actress on the dance partisans thread. didn't expect to like that album nearly as much as i did, it's a nice variety of styles that all happen to fit with my taste. particularly like "always human" and "maze"

and linkwood was awesome in sf last friday. have you heard the latest firecracker thing?
