I don't understand that at all.

There's a little note about it in italics on the lyrics page.

An excellent essay! It strikes the right note: baffled but awestruck. A few months ago my bud and I, listening to "Let'Em In" on satellite radio, marveled at how a song this determinedly ridiculous -- a song about a doorbell! with a doorbell sound! with military snares!! -- sailed into the Top Five.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 July 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I've been waiting for McCartney 3 for like ever. His #'d solo albums are the best.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

ya hella overrated imo

j/k about disappointment obviously but I would have thought it would have been up your alley. Darkroom, Coming Up, Temp Secretary, Check My Machine are all classics imo and the ballads totally grew on me. I just think of it as a great four-tracky weird bedroom pop record.

dmr, Thursday, 1 July 2010 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

he was almost my stepdad

jaxon, Thursday, 1 July 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

what?

the ballad on it are incredible obviously, waterfalls and one of these days are, I think, two of the best songs he ever wrote (that includes any of the beatles work). and the thin sound of the rest of it is exactly what is good about it.

akm, Thursday, 1 July 2010 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

Great essay by Taylor Parkes. I do like the sound of Paul's 70s life-style: happy family life, a sympathetic soul mate who he could make music and go horse-riding with, and being cheerfully bonged out at all times.

I think this might have been one of his happiest times. I remember seeing an interview where he was saying that in the late 70s the Beatles hysteria had died down in the UK - enough that he could get the train from Sussex to Charing Cross and walk to his office in Soho Square without much hassle. One John died the hysteria started up again and that free and easy moment disappeared forever.

Bob Six, Thursday, 1 July 2010 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

Loving these outtakes so far. Thanks!

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:17 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, "Blue Sway" sounds like Ashra. It even has a tempo change.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:38 (fifteen years ago)

I do love the Coming Up video, classic Paul. and a nod to the Sparks even

has arlen specter never heard clarence thomas's laugh? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

never been a huge fan of this record ... and yet i'm considering downloading the double lp version on the octaner blog ... paul is sometimes at his best when he's at his most tossed off.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 July 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just kidding. Mostly. A few years ago he came into the radio station my mom works at and was flirting with her, but she was recently divorced and didn't see the signs. She's got some of it recorded. He sang her happy birthday.

jaxon, Thursday, 1 July 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

That's awesome.

Re: the (incredibly irritating) video for "Comin' Up", could someone please tell me who the drummer is Macca is impersonating? Bugged me for years - he looks like a cross between David Bellamy (Americans are advised to google here) and Levon Helm.

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Thursday, 1 July 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Oh right... Wiki tells me it's supposed to be Ginger Baker but it still looks more like David Bellamy meets Levon Helm to me

anyone else download from this site but not get track 11?

mizzell, Friday, 2 July 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

I got track 11, but my Temporary Secretary was all glitchy.

Strange that those are both tunes from the official release.

Nate Carson, Friday, 2 July 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

couple of good songs on this and it's always fun to check out a weird record that actually charted, but as far as strange home-baked home recordings go, 20 times over I will reach for r. stevie moore's 'phonography'

Listened to this for the first time last night - holy shit, this is SICK!!! Why haven't people been drooling over this for years? Completely unlike anything you'd expect from Macca. Reminds me of Ariel Pink somehow... I love "Coming Up" - was it a single or something, cos it sounds very familiar?

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 2 July 2010 09:07 (fifteen years ago)

Honestly man they have been!

The reverse TARDIS of pasta (Niles Caulder), Friday, 2 July 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

COMING UP!!!

So pleased about this thread and this album. Not least because most of these tracks would've most likely been seen as cackhanded garbage in their day, but it's such a surprise to hear Macca doing a kind of electric psychobilly/new wave party record - never thought he had it in him.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 2 July 2010 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "Coming Up" was a single

The B-side, the live Wings version of "Coming Up", became a #1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 hit in June 1980. The A-side, the McCartney solo version, reached #2 in the UK.

dmr, Friday, 2 July 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

I can't get Bogey Music out of my head. I love the little story about how it's an exploitation record for Fungus the Bogeyman.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 3 September 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

so someone played the radio slave mix of temporary secretary out a couple weeks ago and it was p much a banger. still cant get into this album but i 'got' it for a second there.

Nice for you guys. I am looking more forward to "Tug Of War", which is his masterpiece. :)

Is that everything ?

Mark G, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

I should add it is his masterpiece as a solo act......

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

that reissue looks dope EXCEPT it is shiiiiitty to put an edit of Check My Machine on the regular bonus disc and the full-length only on the extra-bonus one, and apparently w/ Band On The Run the 3-disc cost US$20 and the 4-disc cost US$100?!??!??!?!??!?!wtf

Unusatralian (sic), Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

amazon lists the deluxe of this at $60 which means it will be less than that. I'm excited, love this album.

akm, Thursday, 28 April 2011 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't the 4th disc 'much the same' as the extra disc of a few years ago?

Mark G, Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

I will check this machine....

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 09:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't care about "Check My Machine" (which is rubbish, frankly), but the album may benefit from the remastering if they do a good job. It doesn't sound very convincing on the current version.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 28 April 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

"Darkroom" is so great sounding on the original vinyl! Super hot, warm, great separation.

timellison, Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah man there are like 5 records i miss owning and this is absolutely one of them, "Summer's Day" sounded SO good with a beer in hand

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 April 2011 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

X-Post: The aesthetic in 1993, when the album was remastered, and also around the original CD release of the album, was very much pro-little separation. Separation has become more fashionable again lately, and that is one thing I really long forward to. The separation is also one of the most important improvements of the current Queen remasters, and they were originally reissued around the same time as the McCartney ones.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 29 April 2011 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

Btw. I suppose these will get the same design as the Lennon remasters and Badfinger remasters, with the Apple logo on the back and all.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 29 April 2011 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

no, because it wasn't an apple release

akm, Friday, 29 April 2011 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

I wish paul would play “temporary secretary” live again. it’s great that he did it in 2015 but he may not know just how big it still is now. the people have spoken!

I’m told Paul bought copies of Love You to give to all his friends and his favorite song of all time is “Honkin’ Down the Highway.”

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 13 October 2023 18:06 (two years ago)

xp It looks like he played it one time in 2022, but that was during a VIP soundcheck set. Other than that he hasn't played it since 2017. I'm still futilely hoping he'll whip out "Secret Friend" one of these days...

J. Sam, Friday, 13 October 2023 19:14 (two years ago)

secret friend is mr bellamy to temporary secretary's fuh you

weird spacey mccartney is so much more fun than creepy horny mccartney and I don't know why that song has caught on so much lately other than the wtf is this the silly love songs guy factor (which you can get with other better songs)
