I'm going into the studio with Agalloch on Saturday. Will see what possible info I can leak.

I am personally anticipating the new Enslaved, and Rush's Clockwork Angels.

xxp- I wanna be pals with Steve Harris!

Glad to hear about Enslaved! Saw them open for Opeth last year. Opeth said they were taking a hiatus after their U.S. tour, though they continued to do European dates. I assume that means no albums for a few years too. I worry that Witchcraft is doing the same. Magnus Pellander put out a solo EP this year and is supporting that now. I was impressed by Graveyard last year, and their Myspace page says the new album is being mixed.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

Can't believe I forgot the Agalloch! Very excited. Hope the recording goes well Nate.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

wonder if the waking the cadaver's new slab of "Slamming Gore Groove" will up their avg score from 11.5

original bgm, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

i am now officially anticipating a new october tide album! just got an e-mail about it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to be reviewing the October tide, I'll post my thoughts when I get it.

You guys should be anticipating The Sword. Big step up from the last album. It's a sci-fi concept thing, in the vein of Slough Feg (both musically and conceptually).

That is pretty darn exciting.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah J3ff - that sounds great. I want to like The Sword more than I do, so maybe crazy sci-fi Slough Feg style will do it.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

OK, on the sometimes-female-fronted front, I just discovered the German semi-gothic band Mandrake, previously unknown to me despite having 5 albums. I'm going through them in order, and so far really pleased with everything (up through the beginning of Mary Celeste, which just started). I'd put them up there with Brave and Xandria as bands you should check out if you wish Lacuna Coil sounded less like Evanescence.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

New Blind Guardian is excellent as always.

^ Ooohhh!

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, I'm plenty envious of Jeff now.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't have pegged you as a Blind Guardian guy, Nate.

Looks like they decided to go big and epic again. Production is less overkill than A Night at the Opera, thankfully. It just amazes me that they are consistently a level or two above everybody else.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, every time Blind Guardian puts a new album out they outclass their power metal peers. With so many trendier metal releases getting attention, I kept forgetting they have a new one coming out.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like much power metal, but Blind Guardian wins. You can't argue with quality like that.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 10:39 (fifteen years ago)

I got one of those "rock lullaby" CDs in today's mail, this one devoted to Black Sabbath. I'm listening to it now. It's not bad.

Duran (Doran), Thursday, 1 July 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Blown away by the Christian Mistress track on Stereogum. I've been watching them develop their act on stage, 7", and cassette. But this upcoming album from 20 Buck Spin just jumped to the top of my most anticipated of 2010.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 1 July 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

The Christian Mistress CD is so damn good. I just love their singer, she sounds like she should be Kim McAuliffe's daughter.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 July 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

She was going to be Witch Mountain's singer for a minute. Then she moved to Olympia. Then we got Uta. All is balanced in the universe.

I feel the need to say Bill Magill and Skot to thread
I dunno why

I think sometimes our slab of daily Riff Rock doesnt have to be necessarily gloomy, dark, swampy or depressing. Sometimes all it needs is to be rockin' and, why not, even funny.

Biggus Diccus are funny. But, beware, they're far from being a simple joke band. Their music is finely sculpted: pure muscular Riff Rock. Heavy, sweaty, catchy, fuzzy and booty shakin'.The riffs are the right measure of fat and badass and the vocals are delicously Chris Goss oriented, with a lot of crooning swagger. Their hooks get in your head and you'll find yourself singing them mindlessly in a few minutes.

And that's where the problem, or the funniest part, comes in. Because you'll find yourself singing out loud refrains that talk about unstoppable erections, devinat S/M nymphomaniacs, obese lovers, lesbian gangrapes and everything your filthy head can thiunk of. The opener "Flagpole of Love" is an irresistible jewel of almost QOTSA-esque catchiness wrapped around some of the most obscene and explicit lyroics since Turbonegro. And they get worse.

So if you like your rawk rollin and thunderin' but you dont mind some (very) filthy and (very) sexual humour to it, give it a try. NOT FOR THE KIDDIES!!!

Get their album on Bandcamp (for free): http://biggusdiccus.bandcamp.com/

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

I have no idea on the quality of it, so please report back!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

Glenn doesn't have the time to do a poll just now (originally we were going to do an ILM decade poll BUT theres been so many decade polls so fuck that) but there has never been an ILM Metal/Hard Rock poll before.
I was thinking of a Best Metal/Hard Rock Songs Poll and a Best Metal Hard Rock Albums Poll so I'd be willing to do that IF someone else can do the number crunching. Glenn has kindly provided the software he uses to do all the polls, so if anyone can do it then please volunteer.

Glenn can answer any questions on the software etc.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Wish I had time/energy to run the software myself. That said, I'd love to participate in the poll if anyone else can help.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

I really don't have it in me to tabulate another poll right now. It's a really time/life-consuming process.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Why not just make it a discussion thread instead of another poll? u_u

ksh, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

love you for that ksh

Yeah I'm with these guys. Polls are meaningless. They are just bell curves of popular taste. That's the opposite of learning.

Nate Carson, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love a thread like that, as long as I don't get laughed out of it for repping for hair metal.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

dude point me at the people who laugh at you for repping for hair metal, and I will kill those people with my bare hands

Okay cool. It's just that every time I drop in on a metal thread, everyone's talking about this heavy, growly stuff from recent years that I know NOTHING about.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah well we're gonna keep right on talking about that stuff 'cause it kicks ass, don't get me wrong

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

haha

I actually like that Mantic Ritual record from last year, but only 'cos it sounds like the thrashy stuff I listened to in 1986 while I destroying my body trying to learn skateboard tricks. What else is new that sounds like that?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

hosting a discussion like that itt is just asking for a huge derail that would inevitably crowd out all discussion of new and upcoming records. needs to be hosted elsewhere imo

ksh, Friday, 2 July 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

like in a poll?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

hah

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

well theres no poll if johnny wont do it. I dont think anyone else will volunteer.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

What kind of software does Glenn use? I mean, if it's largely automated, pretty much anyone could do it. All I do is plug people's votes into Excel and do the math in my head as I go along (which is probably only about 92% reliable).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

If we're gonna do this poll, why don't we at least wait until the current albums/tracks thing is a wrap?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

it would be ilxor. Noms would be open for 3 weeks so it will be over long before voting started nevermind results

johnny check your email

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

3 weeks for noms 3 weeks for voting means its 6 weeks before the tabulator has to do anything, i do the rest.
