I agree, I think it is his attitude towards the incident which has put people off as much as the incident itself -- he expected saying sorry to make everything okay, and has acted angry and butthurt ever since when his album didn't do as well as he expected it to. No one is owed record sales.

i mean he had a streak of very successful singles, but he was never going to have the highest selling album of the year like Confessions and totally be king of the hill.

Even though I hated half his songs it's pretty much undeniable that dude was being groomed for supermegastardom; he'd had a successful introduction into the world of black cinema and sold a shit-ton of records and was dating the woman everyone wanted to bone. Basically about the only thing he could have done to fuck everything up was... beat the shit out of her and then wonder why wearing a gaudy necklace that said "OOPS!" in cartoon font pissed people off. Which he did.

okay crazypants, it is NOT better than any of the BEP singles; it's about on par with the interminable filler on the second half of the album (I don't even remember any of those songs aside from "Ring-A-Ling")

i like it better than "i'mma be", "meet me halfway" (sublime chorus tho) & "rock your body"

and "i gotta feeling" but i was never along w/ the consensus on that one so i'll let it ride

I'd assume the decision would be more than likely made by a Sony/Jive head honcho, or some BET executive/publicist/team, looking to turn this into an "OMG" zeitgeist talking point moment. yeah pulling the "he's a pop star, he's probably just following orders" thing is pointless. regardless of whose idea it was to perform "Man In The Mirror," he was aware of the subtext of it all well before he stepped onstage and shed a tear.

well tbf I think a large reason why this is still a big problem is because he is completely blind to the subtext of it all

I think it's great song honestly, could actually be my favorite single of his ever. Would be even better without Tyga & Kevin McCall... and I like "No Bullshit" from that mixtape as well. Sticking to the core R&B format is really the only way he'll make a "comeback," Grafitti was garbage (besides "Sing Like Me,"), "Deuces" is exactly what he should be doing(though I guess in the context of him and Rihanna's relationship, the song is kind of gross and those that view everything he does through that lens will continue to view him as an asshole but that's neither here nor there).
