I agree that he can and should be able to get past this; part of doing that is, for example, not being pissy about people being wary of his records in the immediate aftermath and not turning tributes to Michael Jackson into pontification platforms about himself

I agree, I think it is his attitude towards the incident which has put people off as much as the incident itself -- he expected saying sorry to make everything okay, and has acted angry and butthurt ever since when his album didn't do as well as he expected it to. No one is owed record sales.

xpost A commercial flop, yes, but artists don't make any money on record sales anyway anymore

Also Jay-Z apparently said, “Chris is a walking dead man.”

Mr. Zomg 6 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

his career will likely be nonexistent w/ in 3-5 years, pre-beating was on track to have an usher-like career

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

his career will likely be nonexistent w/ in 3-5 years

this is true of most r&b/pop stars tbf

insert your favorite discriminatory practice here (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

right, but it's only true for CB because of the beating

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think Chris was ever really gonna be at Usher level, at least not longevity-wise

~athdouspart (some dude), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

i mean he had a streak of very successful singles, but he was never going to have the highest selling album of the year like Confessions and totally be king of the hill.

~athdouspart (some dude), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

Even though I hated half his songs it's pretty much undeniable that dude was being groomed for supermegastardom; he'd had a successful introduction into the world of black cinema and sold a shit-ton of records and was dating the woman everyone wanted to bone. Basically about the only thing he could have done to fuck everything up was... beat the shit out of her and then wonder why wearing a gaudy necklace that said "OOPS!" in cartoon font pissed people off. Which he did.

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

xp yeah maybe not, but it's wrong to say that his career hasn't suffered at all

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

can we talk about Usher's deal with Satan, btw? like why the hell does everyone love "OMG" THAT much?

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

people like "OMG" THAT much cuz it's indistinguishable from BEP

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

and it's better than any of those singles except for "boom boom pow"

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

okay crazypants, it is NOT better than any of the BEP singles; it's about on par with the interminable filler on the second half of the album (I don't even remember any of those songs aside from "Ring-A-Ling")

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

i like it better than "i'mma be", "meet me halfway" (sublime chorus tho) & "rock your body"

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

and "i gotta feeling" but i was never along w/ the consensus on that one so i'll let it ride

incredible length (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the choice of song material seems totally self-serving and narcissistic, kinda self-defeating no matter how genuine his breakdown is. it's both genuine and horribly cynical at the same time...

Hold up -- aren't all you guys assuming that Chris Brown himself chose "Man in the Mirror" for the tribute? I'd assume the decision would be more than likely made by a Sony/Jive head honcho, or some BET executive/publicist/team, looking to turn this into an "OMG" zeitgeist talking point moment. I'm not sure that Chris would've had a say in what he performed; dude was more than likely handed a script and told to learn the choreography and roll with it.

yeah I dunno I'm assuming he at least had some input...? who knows

insert your favorite discriminatory practice here (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 28 June 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

He could have said "me singing 'Smooth Criminal' and 'Man in the Mirror' back to back might not be a good idea" at some point and backed out of the whole thing.

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not sure that Chris would've had a say in what he performed; dude was more than likely handed a script and told to learn the choreography and roll with it.

doubtful, you don't just tell someone "btw learn all the moves to three iconic michael jackson routines of our choosing".

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Monday, 28 June 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

yeah pulling the "he's a pop star, he's probably just following orders" thing is pointless. regardless of whose idea it was to perform "Man In The Mirror," he was aware of the subtext of it all well before he stepped onstage and shed a tear.

~athdouspart (some dude), Monday, 28 June 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

well tbf I think a large reason why this is still a big problem is because he is completely blind to the subtext of it all

Opinions are a lot like assholes. You've got LOTS of BOTH of them. (HI DERE), Monday, 28 June 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

how is that even possible...?

I dun think the fact that he's playing a thug in an upcoming movie is gonna do him favors, regardless of the fact that he was shooting it before the rihanna incident.

BIG MEECH aka the larryhoover (The Reverend), Monday, 19 July 2010 08:50 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

so I know everyone hates him now and stuff but "Deuces" is kind of a huge hit, so we should probably talk about it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iJqlhg6TdU

I think it's great song honestly, could actually be my favorite single of his ever. Would be even better without Tyga & Kevin McCall... and I like "No Bullshit" from that mixtape as well. Sticking to the core R&B format is really the only way he'll make a "comeback," Grafitti was garbage (besides "Sing Like Me,"), "Deuces" is exactly what he should be doing(though I guess in the context of him and Rihanna's relationship, the song is kind of gross and those that view everything he does through that lens will continue to view him as an asshole but that's neither here nor there).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KSfEDDuZfk

again I was never a big fan of his but his R&B joints like this, "sing like me," "take you down," were always his strong suit to me.

/ (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

hate to just repost what i tweeted but:

can't deal with Chris Brown having an uptempo breakup song - "guess me beating your face in was a dealbreaker, lol time to chuck the deuce!"

some dude, Sunday, 29 August 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I figure that's the reaction a lot of you guys will have to it, which is understandable I guess
