Or, like, "James Last's Non Stop Dance Party 27". Which also, admittedly, is a pretty hot jam.

i dont get how what hes saying about freddie hubbard makes sense there. still reading tho
― choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 09:27 (seventeen years ago)
i mean, freddie hubbard came up post-bebop which was all about 'art' over 'performance' -- just not sure its making the point he wants it to
i think it was more about hubbard being a technician (a jazz improviser in hubbard's case) rather than a conceptualist; he's arguing that the conceptual focus on gillis overshadows discussion about the quality of what he does.
picking hubbard sure seems kind of awkward after two days ago though.
― unclejam79, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
he wrote that on the 21st, but yeah, i think unclejam has it there w/ technique vs concept
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i think i just think thats an off-point example that doesnt fit easily into being a technician rather than artiste or whatever
― choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
It seems like an exhausting way to say that GT = technically and conceptually dull, plus kinda abrasive and samey.
― served by boot-face (contenderizer), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)
pfft it's just an overthought variation on 'he doesn't write SONGS maaan'
― uptown churl, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)
no its not
― choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
I think there are some awkward transitions when he's trying to get from one major section to the next, but in general I have no beef with his technique... I've spent a lot of idle hobby-time trying to do the same type of thing and it is not easy! He has a good way of milking the maximum surprise and fun out of whatever he uses...if it was just kind of slamming samples together it wouldn't have any staying power, but he manages to build the overlaps into new hooks that actually get stuck in my head now. I dunno, I think it's really great. The amount of attention on him as this guy/party god kind of works against it though, I mean the disintegration of the individual artist voice that's promised by the hyper-mash-up concept. But I guess he can't really help that.

New album if anyone careshttp://www.illegal-art.net/allday/
― Number None, Monday, 15 November 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)
love that cover.
is this to be a commercially-released disc? it says the download is free, and meant to be listened to as a whole (so we aren't talking about a sample song being made available for download to promote the album).
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
I think his previous albums were free too
anyway love girl talk can't wait
― dayo, Monday, 15 November 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)
The last one was a Radiohead style pay what you want deal.

Hooray!
― jaymc, Monday, 15 November 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)
so it's out now! cool. haven't seen much advance buzz about it, strangely.

Good one?
― Number None, Monday, 15 November 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)
OK, this is pretty well done so far. It's only worth listening to once though so listen closely!
― skip, Monday, 15 November 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)
i mean, how can anyone not enjoy these four songs at the same time??
# 5:09 Iggy Pop - "Lust for Life"# 5:09 Beastie Boys - "Hey Ladies"# 5:15 White Town - "Your Woman"# 5:18 Lady GaGa - "LoveGame"

Listening now, this has some really good patches! I still miss the much higher sample density on Night Ripper, and he stays on the same thing too long for my taste, but the highs are high. Dude keeps pre-empting all of my samples though!
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 15 November 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, he's holding onto samples too long (did this on his last album though iirc, save for the Big Country solo coz that should run forever). Still, some of it's really fun.
― Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
Also Night Ripper was enough at 41 minutes. Only about halfway through this one but 70 minutes seems too long.
― Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
Some of these samples are infuriatingly familiar...hopefully wikipedia will pick up the slack.
― skip, Monday, 15 November 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)
All the single ladies over Ante Up is incredible in this mix.
Personally I think this is a lot stronger than Night Ripper was.

same here
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)
gonna just check mediafire
It took a couple of tries before it worked for me, you just have to leave it running until the DL window pops up.
Listened to about 3/4 of this and was actually surprised by how much of it I didn't recognize, particularly the music. But I was listening in my car on the highway, which makes the music harder to hear. So far "Pretty Boy Swag" over "Windowlicker" is my favorite part.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
I posted a link to magiska upthread which has a hotfile download of it.

What's the vocal track over Fugazi's "Waiting Room"? That one works really well.

"rude boy" right?
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)
i wonder if this is going to -- eventually, at least -- be made available on itunes/emusic-type services. the last one was iirc.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
i cant imagine the dude makes too much on record sales, especially since anyone who really cares about his shit is gonna grab the free version today
― markers, Monday, 15 November 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)
also it's much harder for him to get sued if he's putting this stuff out for free and touring hard where he's doing what thousands of other people do every night
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)
assume this question is sarcastic as i can imagine little worse

by which i mean that the "make all your money touring!!" thing actually makes sense for him as legal protection
there are some really good parts on here

girl talk shows must be the worst
― markers, Monday, 15 November 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)
i've seen him live. it was a blast.
he probably doesn't make much on record sales, but still his prior albums are available on emusic.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
the instrumentals he's picking here are really good -- a lot of funkier shit and/or stuff that works as beats & a lot less "alt rock" + "rap" or just laid out instrumentals -- seems like he's thinking more about what instrumentals would sound good as samples as opposed to a kitschiness factor -- the bananarama & inxs bits work really well
