Phil Anselmo's antics on stage could be considered almost Spinal Tap-ian if there was any sense of irony to them.
Metal Maniacs once reviewed a Wacken festival that Pantera played where Phil was so drunk, he had to repeatedly be handed the microphone by stagehands. Then ended his set by saying "Thank you, we rule".
His fans are funny too. I knew at least two people who said the lyrics to Vulgar Display of Power describe "how to be a man". And someone on USEnet once posted that "Phil isn't racist, he just believes in white pride, aka being proud of being white".
― Elvin Wayburn Phillips, Saturday, 1 August 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link
"Mr. Anselmo, I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. My CD player, myself, and my black 1993 Honda Accord with the one grey door will not tolerate your hate speech on our speakers. We have not and will not charge you a cent and you're free to take your racist heavy metal elsewhere. I'd rather not call the police, but if you insist on continuing to make white pride speeches I will. Please leave."― and what, Monday, October 22, 2007 4:37 PM (1 year ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban PermalinkI've been without a car for like 2 months now. Shit sucks. Tom Sanford is a New York-based artist whose work is exhibited around the world. His paintings, which range from historical works depicting celebrity assassinations to portraits of gangsta rappers and teen pop tarts to elaborate cosmologies weaved together from Hollywood movies, reflect a deep ambivalence about the American cultural condition.

VH1 just released a countdown of the 100 Most Shocking Moments in Music. The only problem is they forgot the ONSTAGE murder of Dimebag, guitarist for Pantera and DamagePlan.
Dimebag was mentioned when Kiss made the top 100 for releasing a Kiss casket. Well Thank you VH1. The casket Dime was buried in is more important then Dime himself?
Things like Fergie peeing her pants and Whitney getting hit on by a french man made it, but the loss of a great guitarist didn't matter to the music network even though they gave Pantera 2 spots in their top 40 metal songs a few years back.
Dimebags death was just 5 years ago. Did you forget already VH1?

[edit] Viking CrownMain article: Viking CrownViking Crown was a side project started by Anselmo in the mid 90's. The members of the band are Anton Crowley (Anselmo) on Guitars, Bass and Drums, Killjoy on vocals and Opal Enthroned (Stephanie Opal Weinstein) on keyboards. On their first album "unorthodox steps of ritual" Anselmo played every instrument and layed down his own vocals. This is why there were never any live shows from this band. It was Anselmo's solo project. A very short lived side project.

Who is/was this guy?
Surprise, surprise. =P As I have pointed out before, nothing awakes the ILX witch-hunters quite like someone’s defying the PC stance on racism. If said person also happens to have the temerity to argue forcibly, his doom is sealed. Let’s have another look at that one:“I'm really sensitive to the ILX witch-hunting when it comes to 'racism' around here. No one bats an eye when Bobby Gillespie talks all his retarded communist shit. Shit, even famous hooker-torturer Rick James gets a lot of unconditional love around here. Basically, how does Phil Anselmo being racist affect any of you at all? Who cares? I think Superjoint Ritual are a pretty great band, fwiw, and so is Down, and so was Pantera, in their prime. I doubt many of you would have agreed much with Miles Davis's politics, either. And what about all the Krishna-conscious jazz cats, and the Farrakhaun-quoting Muslim rappers we all love and adore?
Let's not be so quick to tar and feather, boys and girls. Righteousness is in the eye of the beholder.

how many times has the phrase "jazz cats" been used on ILX?
hilarious to think that decrying anselmo's fuckheaded racist bullshit is maintaining "the PC stance on racism" as opposed to, you know, just the rational level-headed reaction to racism.

Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down fame has one of the most signature voices in metal, thanks to that drill sergeant bark he cultivated during the Vulgar Display of Power years. His speaking voice is pretty booming and formidable, too. So if you are a huge fan of the singer and want his distinct voice for your ringtone, well, guess what? You can have it!A battery of individual ringtones have been created using Phil's voice and they range in tone from serious to utterly badass. Sounds like Anselmo himself.
In a statement, the singer said, "Grab one of my new 'Craptastic' ringtones and be the first one on your block to be full of it!" No need for the hard sell here!
To download the ringtones, just follow these simple instructions. Text the keywords below to 69937 and the ringtone of choice will be sent to your phone. It's as simple as that. Charges apply per ringtone.

phil anselmo is a frequent commenter on nola.com, new orleans' premier venue for kneejerk racism and anti-liberal-media screeds (like every comment section). here's a non-political taste from an article about a heavy metal singer who got sick from eating sushi, which presented two avenues of attack for the clueless elderly suburbanites who populate this site--"heavy metal is just noise etc" and "SUSHI! in america we eat our food COOKED!" phil weighs in:
DARKTHRONE May 05, 2012 at 6:55PMFollowmpdal-Ok, you asked for it...I'm a homegrown New Orleans boy, and a Heavy Metal singer. 6-platinum records, 3-gold records (different band), a record label that puts out local Heavy Metal (and other extreme oddities), I love sushi, and I'm a stupidly rich high school drop out and published author in several "hands-on, legit, and tangible" magazines, I've been quoted in several major selling books since 1990 and have been in films and the damn TV for decades. It's 2012, and yep, Heavy Metal still pays the bills, so it's extremely relevant. So I suggest, you go enjoy your stale, modern country records (or whatever the hell you listen to), or watch "American Idol" with the rest of the herd. And watch out for who you "call out".Because yep, I'm as tough as stone, and chances are very, very likely I'd kick your ass from Bourbon to Clearview blvd. And Rob Halford would too.And he's in his 50's.But lets not get over-amped here...(HA!)... I bet your just a nice guy, posting stupid stuff, just like me, and we'd get along juuuuust fine if we were sippin' a beer at a bar...Because I'm just a "stupid HM singer" and your higher-leveled mentality would dwarf mine!Right? You could even (because I'm so dumb), coerce me into buying the beers all night too!!!!!!Befuddle me more w/your brainiac power genius. My truthful, yet arrogant and humorous tirade is over.Goodnight sweet prince, and step gently through this minefield of life.Hope you have a great evening-PAps- SAINTS WILL DESTROY!!!!!!!
