i hope there's a video, its important! i still havent seen the video for 'Pilots' properly and i think i need to see Alison on screen more, ideally 'Train' would be a pastiche of the 'Lets Get Physical' video but i'm sure she's tired of the Olivia Neutron-Bomb thing already

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 March 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The 'Human' video was amazing - quite pervy and voyeuristic (Alison playing the snooping chambermaid).
The Pilots video's just OK. She looks lovely in it, though.
I think there'll definitely be a video for 'Train' - I reckon it's going to be a pretty big single.

russ t, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh it'll be 'in with a bullet' at number 44 in the charts - absolutely no airplay on daytime radio i suspect (maybe from Sara Cox and Jo Whiley if they're feeling sporty) which is a shame, i would like it if it was a hit but i guess it doesnt really matter. look forward to the video, i bet it will be directed by Dawn Shadforth tho they really need Gondry on the case here.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I rarely listen to the radio, but I've heard Train twice now. I think it could be the one to break them.
In more ways than one.

russ t, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the Ewan Pearson remixes, you know...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've already dreamed up a video for "Twist" that's been on pretty heavy rotation in my head for the last few days; the new album really is great.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolutely fantastic, it will be a massive hit. It's like Fischerspooner getting roughed up by Marianne Faithfull. When I heard it on the radio yesterday it was the first record this year I've stopped and waited to see who made it.

Previously I'd thought of them as a stopgap Portishead. They'd do, but only till the real thing came along. Now they've raised their game and the followers are now leaders.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

Oh, might as well revive this thread since:

http://lastgasstation.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/rocket.jpg

It sounds exactly as you might guess it would sound based on that cover.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:22 (sixteen years ago)

Expect remixes from Richard X, Tiesto, Grum and Penguin Prison.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

It's a good song, but I'm sad to find Goldfrapp playing catch-up instead of leading the way. Ned sez "retroironicrediscovery"... sounds about right.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

Nice outfit but impractical civil engineering!

i expect this to sound like Alpinestars 'Jump Jet'

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 22 January 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

I like it. I don't mind that it's behind the curve, as this particular sound (reminds me of Cosmos "Take Me With You" a bit, though not as amazing obv) doesn't really age for me.

Tim F, Friday, 22 January 2010 12:13 (sixteen years ago)

The Man has got involved, can't find anywhere to listen to this.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Friday, 22 January 2010 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Friday, 22 January 2010 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

I like this! I'd describe it as 80s Menudo + Van Halen's "Jump". Love the cheap-sounding bass!

I've always thought Goldfrapp (although wonderful) aren't usually very good at doing "catchy" (that's why Supernature didn't work for me). Fortunately, this is definitely an exception. I'm also relieved they've ditched the "pastoral" thing TBH.

one boob is free with one (daavid), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of their last album, I liked how they did the whole folksy psychedelic thing, but still managed to sound completely modern.

I wouldn't say that I dislike "Rocket", but I feel slightly disappointed that they are so slavishly reproducing the 80s vibe without bothering to update it or add anything new.

Moodles, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Still buying the new album though...

Moodles, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

I still like the first album best, they're very good the wintery John Barry thing. Rocket's nice enough, maybe not so much that I'll acquire the album legally without sampling a few more tracks first.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

Love the album cover.

Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

That's a stunning cover. If I had no idea who Goldfrapp was, I'd buy that album based on the cover alone.

van smack, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

Sounds like a Miami Horror remix of "One Day" by Juan MacLean etc which is a very good thing.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, the "you're never coming back" is exactly "you'll realize that I'm the"...

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'm hoping (based on the album art etc.) that this is less just post-electroclash/Gaga-for-Guardian-readers/"lol 80s" and more specifically a kind of technicolour synth-disco affair, a diva-pop equiv to The Avalanches' "A Different Feeling".

"Jump" meets "Xanadu".

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^

Absolutely, I'm hoping that the Ewan Pearson Disco Odyssey remix of 'Ride a White Horse' is the template for this.

Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

So now "Believer" is out there, and it's even less interesting than "Rocket." I'm not giving up yet, because history proves some of the best Goldfrapp tracks are the deep cuts as opposed to the singles, but... ehhh.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 10:20 (sixteen years ago)

zvookster, Saturday, 30 January 2010 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

Although, my favorite albums of the past few years have all come out (or leaked, at least) in Q1.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 10:35 (sixteen years ago)

The Richard X remix of "Rocket" is better, but the original and "Believer" are zzzzzzzzzzzzz

might seem normal (snoball), Saturday, 30 January 2010 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

The Richard X remix of "Rocket" is better

And you can judge directly:

Kitchen Person, Monday, 15 July 2013 10:55 (twelve years ago)

That is very nice indeed.
She looks amazing too, she's not aged in years.

not_goodwin, Monday, 15 July 2013 11:07 (twelve years ago)

indeed.
if its all in that kind of mood, then it could be a perfect album for the autumn.

mark e, Monday, 15 July 2013 11:12 (twelve years ago)

Sounds like it's going to have more of a Seventh Tree feel which is fine by me. I agree that this will a perfect soundtrack for autumn. I'm hoping the Beth Gibbons album will come out around the same time, think they'll compliment each other nicely.

Easily my most anticipated album this year

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Tuesday, 17 January 2017 21:50 (nine years ago)

Same here

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 23:24 (nine years ago)

Sounds like they might be continuing to alternate between soft pastoral albums and dancy electro ones. Pity, as I think they're better at the former these days.

Silver Eye out March 31st:

1. Anymore

2. Systemagic

3. Tigerman

4. Become The One

5. Faux Suede Drifter

6. Zodiac Black

7. Beast That Never Was

8. Everything Is Never Enough

9. Moon In Your Mouth

10. Ocean

chap, Monday, 23 January 2017 13:32 (nine years ago)

The single is pretty good. I felt like I was waiting for an amazing chorus that didn't quite arrive.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 January 2017 14:11 (nine years ago)

Yeah same - but I've a feeling it might prove catchier than it first appears.

chap, Monday, 23 January 2017 14:26 (nine years ago)

I was never that keen on Ooh La La and I still ended up loving Supernature so I'm not too worried. Hopefully it will be a grower.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 January 2017 14:37 (nine years ago)

YES!

Working night & day, I tried to stay awake... (Turrican), Monday, 23 January 2017 18:30 (nine years ago)

Deliciously evil-sounding. Like.

Jeff W, Monday, 23 January 2017 18:57 (nine years ago)

I still love Silver Eye, but perhaps not as much as Supernature, Black Cherry or Head First.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Saturday, 23 September 2017 08:59 (eight years ago)

Turrican, you would love this tour. Setlist was largely Supernature, and the band closed with an extended mix of "Strict Machine" (very similar to the We are Glitter mix). Nothing from Head First at this show though "Dreaming" and "Shiny and Warm" have been played on this tour.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:30 (eight years ago)

I think I may be the only person who thinks Seventh Tree is their best album.

Moodles, Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

i saw them open for New Order and it was pretty mesmerizing. and I had NO IDEA Alison Goldfrapp is 51 years old.

nomar, Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

Moodles, Seventh Tree is definitely one of my favourites, the inverse of Tales of Us and includes probably one of their best tracks, "Eat Yourself". No songs from Tree or Tales on this tour, the band's trajectory is mostly dancefloor elevation

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:40 (eight years ago)

Nope. To me it's her best by far.

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Sunday, 24 September 2017 01:54 (eight years ago)

Don't know about on here, but I know at least one person IRL who agrees with you.

Moodles, Sunday, 24 September 2017 03:09 (eight years ago)

Up thread there's some users who cite tales of us as favourite. It's mine as well over time

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 24 September 2017 04:00 (eight years ago)

Seventh Tree is underrated, even if it's not the side of Goldfrapp I prefer.

Nope. One of my favourite albums full stop. Seeing her in Glasgow on Halloween and looking forward to a bigger dancier vibe tho

i know kore-eda (or something), Sunday, 24 September 2017 08:22 (eight years ago)

I’m liking the production on the last one but find it a bit lacking tune-wise

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 24 September 2017 11:40 (eight years ago)

The slower tracks on Silver Eye are quite similar to Goldfrapp bsides ("Bodo" w/ Pale 3 is akin to "Faux Suede Drifter" for example). Or they're an amalgamation of Black Cherry/Tales Of Us style, like on "Beast That Never Was". But yeah not so sure about the more upbeat ones, they're not as tuneful as anything on Supernature/Black Cherry.

On a side note, Goldfrapp are pure fire live, and very heavy (largely in part to their excellent bassist and 3 female keyboardists). They're quite different on record though.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 24 September 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

Chalk me up also in the Tales Of Us best album camp, no question. Seems weird you can't buy the accompanying film as it's a lovely thing and even had a (limited) cinema release.

piscesx, Sunday, 24 September 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

Also seems mad they never released their Medea music either

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)

^ whoa, thanks for mentioning that - never heard that

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 24 September 2017 21:35 (eight years ago)

I've enjoyed all their albums, but Black Cherry, Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree are their three masterpieces for me. I have a hard time picking between Tales Of Us and Seventh Tree.

kitchen person, Monday, 25 September 2017 01:38 (eight years ago)

would rank them similarly kitchen but felt mountain has to be included, especially for "Deer Stop"

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 25 September 2017 03:47 (eight years ago)

Supernature is their masterpiece, IMO. Excellent synthpop.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Monday, 25 September 2017 06:42 (eight years ago)

Number One and Ride a White Horse destroyed the crowd live, it's definitely the peak of their synthpop exrcusions

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 25 September 2017 06:50 (eight years ago)

also Supernature has the beguiling "Time Out from the World" and "Let It Take You"

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 25 September 2017 06:51 (eight years ago)

I just love the way the album sounds - it's really smooth and shiny. The artwork could not represent the contents any better!

bump, this is really good! not everything is amazing but there's some really great stuff on here. the grooves are huge, expensive ass digital plug ins making everything sound like glitter waterfalls. the songs are classy, occasionally brilliant, some a little forgettable. but a super friendly / inviting listen overall.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 18:22 (two years ago)

I think I completely missed Silver Eye, and it looks like this thread missed it as well. Is it good?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 5 June 2024 19:55 (two years ago)

It's probably my least favourite of theirs, but it's still good. It's in the category of their lesser albums along with Supernature and Head First.

They do seem to be incapable of making bad albums and I hope they come back soon.

kitchen person, Thursday, 6 June 2024 00:41 (two years ago)

Hmm, I would put it in the top tier. Strikes a pretty good balance between their dual tendencies, which I find grating when taken to the extreme (7th Tree, Head First).
