for once i agree with unperson. decibel covers are by and large completely retarded
― (roxymuzak) ((((d-.-b)))) (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)
I should have known it was Kurt Ballou who produced the Kvelertak. Probably the grooviest heavy album I've heard all year. What a blast, perfect for summer.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 25 June 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
i really liked the dio r.i.p. in decibel. lots of great fan stories and jeff girly metal treppel comes correct with a very nice tribute.
― scott seward, Friday, 25 June 2010 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
streaming kvelertak now--this is fun! is that handclaps on the second track? awesome.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 25 June 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
xpost so many x's I can't be bothered
I didn't even get my last issue of Decibel. Lost in the post, maybe. That makes me sad.
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 25 June 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)
ok, if girly metal jeff wrote the Dio piece, then i already feel much better about it.
― "enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Saturday, 26 June 2010 05:26 (sixteen years ago)
and, yeah, the kvelertak disc is a hoot.
― "enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Saturday, 26 June 2010 05:28 (sixteen years ago)
i think he means girly jeff wrote a part of it?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 26 June 2010 14:28 (sixteen years ago)
I wrote the obituary part. Not the quotes from artists part, obviously. Thanks for the kind words, Scott -- I tried to write something that capture just how important Dio was to me and metal in general, and I hope I succeeded.
Speaking of girly metal, keep your eyes peeled for a future issue of decibel...

vote for some metal ILM Top 100 2005-2009: VOTING THREAD (Ends when June 29, 2010 is over in every timezone in the world.)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
wow! and youre still posting on last year's results thread
― (roxymuzak) ((((d-.-b)))) (roxymuzak), Monday, 28 June 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)
its not a metal poll. It's a general ILM half decade poll by johnny fever & jordan s. Which probably wont have much metal in it unless everyone here bothers to vote.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 28 June 2010 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
I voted for a couple "metal" albums...

Tame Impala doesn't count, dude
― ksh, Monday, 28 June 2010 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
I've only listened to the Yakuza all the way through once so far, but I keep playing "Deluge" again and again -- what a closer
― ksh, Monday, 28 June 2010 18:07 (sixteen years ago)
it's really ok with me if no metal places on that poll
it's just a poll

agreed
― ksh, Monday, 28 June 2010 18:13 (sixteen years ago)
I belatedly heard Black Tusk. I kept confusing them with the other similarly named Black Breath and Black Cobra. And really to someone who doesn't know any of those bands, they sound sort of similar too, particularly Black Cobra and Black Tusk. They should all tour together and really confuse the hell out of people. I'd enjoy that show. None more Black \m/

ksh, smithy hates polls. despises them. would love to ban them. would love to eradicate poll lovers from the earth.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 28 June 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
Enjoyed the new Danzig. Is his 2004 album worth hearing too?
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 28 June 2010 19:12 (sixteen years ago)
I heard 777 on a drive to Seattle this weekend and it sounded ok.
― Nate Carson, Monday, 28 June 2010 19:29 (sixteen years ago)
Just tried to listen to an EP by some band called Sicarus; new on Century Media. Metalcore + power metal vocals = suck.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 02:34 (sixteen years ago)
777 is pretty good. If you can get past the Marilyn Manson bandwagons single, there's some great stuff on there. The one from 2004, Circle of Snakes, is his failed attempt to go for a more stripped down garage rock sound. He failed.

Fastnbulbous: I became partially tumescent at the thought of such a tour. For it would be righteous.

St. Vitus here tonight.

Vitus was incredible. One of the best reunions I've seen.
― Nate Carson, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)
Besides Iron Maiden, Zoroaster, possible Torche EP, what upcoming heavy releases are people excited about? I think it's about time for some new Gojira but haven't heard any news that they're working on anything yet. What else?
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 03:33 (sixteen years ago)
New Electric Wizard at some point, and Caïna is working on a new album though I'd be surprised to see it this year. Would love a new Witchcraft.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)
I'm still too new to the metal world to know what I should be anticipating right now. Still listening to the last track on the Yakuza record, tbh. Man.
― http://bit.ly/dwHthS (ksh), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 03:49 (sixteen years ago)
I also anticipate that the new issue of Decibel, which I snagged last night at the newsstand since my subscription doesn't kick in until August, will give me some leads!
― http://bit.ly/dwHthS (ksh), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 03:50 (sixteen years ago)
Agalloch, that's the one real biggie I'm awaiting.
Maiden was spectacular tonight. Three weeks ago Harris asked me if I was seeing the Dallas show and I said no, I was seeing them in three weeks. He said, "Great, it usually takes us two weeks to get our legs anyway." And it looks like he was right. No glitches whatsoever, a tight, tight show.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:29 (sixteen years ago)
I'm going into the studio with Agalloch on Saturday. Will see what possible info I can leak.
I am personally anticipating the new Enslaved, and Rush's Clockwork Angels.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 09:45 (sixteen years ago)

xxp- I wanna be pals with Steve Harris!
Glad to hear about Enslaved! Saw them open for Opeth last year. Opeth said they were taking a hiatus after their U.S. tour, though they continued to do European dates. I assume that means no albums for a few years too. I worry that Witchcraft is doing the same. Magnus Pellander put out a solo EP this year and is supporting that now. I was impressed by Graveyard last year, and their Myspace page says the new album is being mixed.
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:17 (sixteen years ago)
Can't believe I forgot the Agalloch! Very excited. Hope the recording goes well Nate.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:26 (sixteen years ago)
what upcoming heavy releases are people excited about?
I guess a new Severe Torture album came out this week, wouldn't mind hearin that
Kamelot album coming up
that's about it

i am now officially anticipating a new october tide album! just got an e-mail about it.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)
I'm going to be reviewing the October tide, I'll post my thoughts when I get it.
You guys should be anticipating The Sword. Big step up from the last album. It's a sci-fi concept thing, in the vein of Slough Feg (both musically and conceptually).
― X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)
That is pretty darn exciting.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 18:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah J3ff - that sounds great. I want to like The Sword more than I do, so maybe crazy sci-fi Slough Feg style will do it.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 19:17 (sixteen years ago)
OK, on the sometimes-female-fronted front, I just discovered the German semi-gothic band Mandrake, previously unknown to me despite having 5 albums. I'm going through them in order, and so far really pleased with everything (up through the beginning of Mary Celeste, which just started). I'd put them up there with Brave and Xandria as bands you should check out if you wish Lacuna Coil sounded less like Evanescence.
― glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:17 (sixteen years ago)
New Blind Guardian is excellent as always.

Okay, I'm plenty envious of Jeff now.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 1 July 2010 01:12 (sixteen years ago)
I wouldn't have pegged you as a Blind Guardian guy, Nate.
Looks like they decided to go big and epic again. Production is less overkill than A Night at the Opera, thankfully. It just amazes me that they are consistently a level or two above everybody else.
