dog latin: my standard recommendation is Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II - Dialogue With The Stars (from last year). i've fallen harder for it than just about anything over the last few years.

and since I know you're into electronic music, that recommendation goes double. I think you might really get off on the trance-inducing qualities this album brings out. some gorgeous melodies too.

the aforementioned cathedral and witchcraft's the alchemist are also quite good if you dig psych and/or prog.

original bgm, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

man i gotta get back to that blut aus nord album, i liked it a lot but it seemed really, like, specific

OK, wow, anybody who likes Wetnurse ought to at least check out the self-titled debut from Norway's Kvelertak. Big, crazed, shriek-punk sprints with old-school hard-rock production clarity and metal force. Only halfway through it, but it's already sounding like a best-of-the-year candidate. Might even be a bridge between my tastes and the Mastodon/Baroness/Harvey Milk camp where everybody but me seems to love hanging out making s'mores or whatever it is you people do there.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, do it right now before we're hit by a meteor or something and it's too late. I don't know which half of you are going to be thanking me, but it's at least half. Kvelertak. John Baizley did the cover.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

Wetnurse comparison is enough for me! Will have to check that out. Thanks Glenn.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 23 June 2010 23:15 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, that Kvelertak is one ripping album alright. Very, very impressed.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

Recent posts make me want to get lifted and re-listen to stuff. If it weren't for the fact that none of my immediate friends do it lately and I have no easy access, I'd dedicate my weekend to the task. Maybe then I wouldn't care whether lists were ranked or not. Yar.

I think I might get more out of my new acquisitions this week in an altered state:
Grand Magus - Hammer Of The North - Wobbles between power metal and stoner rock, nice but a little predictable.
Black Cobra - Chronomega - Good propulsive, crunchy riffs, can take or leave the screamo vocals. Could be a metal offshoot from Amphetamine Reptile roster.
Black Breath - Heavy Breathing - Again, not digging screamo vocals lately, but nice and fast.
Watain - Lawless Darkness - I suppose it's an exceptional black metal album, but I quickly tire of most bm lately.
Reckless didn't have Yakuza when I stopped in.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

I highlighted my personal Top Ten on that list, but I still didn't rank 'em in any kind of order.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 24 June 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

I heard the new Iron Maiden.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

are you allowed to talk about it?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 25 June 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to write at length about it as soon as the flippin' gag order ends. Which is still a couple weeks away.

A. Begrand, Friday, 25 June 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still pulling together my thoughts. I don't believe I was given a gag order, so I will say that it feels a lot like Brave New World with the more complex song structures of A Matter of Life and Death. A couple stone cold classics on there, too.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Friday, 25 June 2010 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

You just made me really really un-excited.

Nate Carson, Friday, 25 June 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

debonerized

(roxymuzak) ((((d-.-b)))) (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still pretty excited.

I'm looking forward to that Maiden disc. I like Brave New World and A Matter of Life and Death a lot.

Black Tusk's Taste The Sin on Relapse is very satisfying.

Duran (Doran), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

new issue (was hoping for a Dio cover/tribute special--the bulk of the thing, that is; not the measly one/two page piece i presume lies therein):

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

Ioannis, RJD died a month and a half ago. Asking for a whole issue full of dedicated content in that space of time is a little unrealistic

the piece that's in it is cool and asks a number of musicians for Dio memories - obv. I have a horse in the Decibel race but really? "Not enough, he didn't get the cover"?

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

well, yeah, it isn't enough imo.

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

still love this cover tho!

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's a terrible cover. Decibel covers almost always are. I don't know what it is about them - the interior content is frequently terrific, but the covers are almost always lame.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Good idea, poor execution.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 25 June 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

I almost always love Decibel covers. Don't think I'll get this one in the mail as my subscription apparently doesn't kick in until August, so I'll have to drop by the bookstore sooner than later to grab it once it's out.

ksh, Friday, 25 June 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

the previous issue's cover was a beaut! cover of the year by me.

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

The Watain one? For sure.

ksh, Friday, 25 June 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah.

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

danzig interview in that issue is pretty hilarious.

original bgm, Friday, 25 June 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

and is this just a one-off cover? back to band pics next issue?

original bgm, Friday, 25 June 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

"Not enough, he didn't get the cover"?

It's disappointing. not enough to cancel a subscription over, but still a disappointment.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

and is this just a one-off cover? back to band pics next issue?

presumably, and I don't speak from any inside knowledge here or anything, it's comics related because Danzig is a big comics guy and somebody had the idea to do that.

I think an RIP cover would be a really bad standard to set, because then the next 100 people to die would inspire "what! [x] got the cover, surely [y] was more important than [x]!" etc which is a tedious fuckin place to hang out even for a hypothetical sentence

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Not everyone who dies will be of the status of DIO

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but it's Dio. Sports Illustrated does RIP covers, and they pick and choose who is "important" enough to get one, John Wooden last week, Walter Payton etc. I'm sure Time does it with political leaders, etc. I don't think arguing about who is more important to something is tedious, it happens all the time, hundreds of times a day on these boards. Choosing who is going to be on a magazine cover, dead or not, is a weekly or monthly determination of who is important if you think about it.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

And yes, to the genre that Decibel covers, Dio is infinitely more important than Danzig.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

I get why Decibel did the Danzig cover they did - I just wish they'd gotten a better artist to do it. That drawing looks like a fourteen-year-old did it.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

Not everyone who dies will be of the status of insert name every time somebody dies after RIP cover precedent is set

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

that's my opinion anyway & is why I was pleased to see a cool Danzig cover instead of a somber RIP A LEGEND HAS PASSED cover

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 25 June 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

BTW, I agree with John - I don't think Dio should have gotten the cover. I think he deserved at least 5-6 pages, but he was old, he got sick, he died. End of story. Now, let's say Iron Maiden's jet crashes while they're flying around on tour - that's a cover.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 25 June 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, just to clarify, for me it's not even a case of who is/isn't important enough to get the cover of any given issue. but rather that Dio's untimely demise is the METAL story of the year (if not the past decade or two) for a sizable percentage of the aging metalhead contingent, i'd say. granted, i don't believe that Decibel really care to cater to my middle-aged kind. but this just seems almost like a slap in the face, you know. almost as if they're saying: "hey, kids. here's our great new Danzig feature issue. (and, oh yeah, also included is a piece on some old has-been who once sang for influential 'hard rockers' Black Sabbath. but now he's dead. so we may as well give the dude a nod, right?) buy or die!"

"enduring lack of street cred" (Ioannis), Friday, 25 June 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not wild about that cover, but then again, I'm not the biggest Danzig fan.

If you want to see a cool comic book-style cover, the new Revolver issues look unreal.

A. Begrand, Friday, 25 June 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

They could do a limited edition issue or something. Im not in the print biz, so i am speaking from an amateur perspective.

"Now, let's say Iron Maiden's jet crashes while they're flying around on tour - that's a cover."

Only if they blot out Janick Gers and put a caricature of him in the top left corner.

Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 25 June 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

I actually like Janick Gers, 'cause I'm not even convinced his guitar's plugged in half the time - I think he's just there to run around onstage.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 25 June 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

Heh. I've gotten used to the guy. He livens things up a little on stage left. Really nice dude, too.

A. Begrand, Friday, 25 June 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

Just getting to hear the Kvelertak - holy shit, this is awesome! Completely up my alley - they've even got handclaps at the end of their first single, "Mjød". As with Glenn, this could be a bridge between me and the Barodon people; first listen and this is jumping right up near the top of my running list of the year's best. Massive in all the right ways, and it grooves like a mother.

Thanks for the heads up gentlemen! Anyone know if this is going to get a North American release, or am I dropping <$20 on another disc this year?

EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 June 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

for once i agree with unperson. decibel covers are by and large completely retarded

(roxymuzak) ((((d-.-b)))) (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

I should have known it was Kurt Ballou who produced the Kvelertak. Probably the grooviest heavy album I've heard all year. What a blast, perfect for summer.

A. Begrand, Friday, 25 June 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

i really liked the dio r.i.p. in decibel. lots of great fan stories and jeff girly metal treppel comes correct with a very nice tribute.

scott seward, Friday, 25 June 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

streaming kvelertak now--this is fun! is that handclaps on the second track? awesome.
