I think the single edit is cheesy -- they really have to bleep "chocha"? That's not even English!

it's on the radio right now, only 2nd time i ever heard it, it rules rules rules!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know, the part where the Prince imitator is drooling over her is pretty classic. Also, HALLE BERRY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

So, I finally heard/saw the vid for this, and I must admit.....it's fucking great. Oh were that all contemporary Hip Hop artists this imaginative and inventive!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

that guy doesnt even look like prince. i wanted monsters and sick ass shit. its just yer run of the mill hype williams thang.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he was supposed to be more the suggestion of Prince than anything else. Besides, bee-covered DJs are always great, and that little girl was CUTE. Plus the forwards-backwards stuff is the best use of that particular trick since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" video.

And don't forget HALLE BERRY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the video explain the meaning of FREMME NEPPA VENETTE?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes -- it says, "Please call Tim Finney collect for this information." ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

missy, Saturday, 2 November 2002 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

there should be a contest to see who can pronounce that reversed bit in Missy's song: Is it worth it, let me work it, i put ma thang down flip it and reverse it. Its your fremma neppa neh neh neppa, its your fremma neppa neh neh neppa. If you gotta big **** let me search it don't matta how hard i gotta work ya, it your fremma neppa neh neh neppa. Now that sounds closer to the song than what's been given previously.

Leo, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear "Work It",

I don't know how to tell you this tactfully, and I hate beating around the bush, so I've just gotta say it: I've grown bored of you. I don't know what happened. It was a steamy, fiery affair we had indeed, and a lot of fun while it lasted. Who knows, maybe the undercurrent of doubt was there all along and I just did an ace job of stifling/ignoring it. Don't take it personally. Honest, I did my very *very* best to convince myself that those backwards lyrics were really exciting, real cutting-edge pop. And I really do admire that minimal bassline! You know I've never thought it was too "stark" -- it's not how many notes you play, it's how you play them (yeah it's a cliche but it's really true). So don't go feeling bad about yourself, 'kay? It's not you, it's me, and it just took me a little while to figure out that this isn't where I want to be. I guess the first sign might've been when you made fun of those Chinese guys -- haha it's just a joke, a laugh, I told myself at first, but somewhere in the back of my mind I wondered if I could ever be with someone who said such things so casually. Then your video -- I mean, I could tell you put a lot into it, but it just left me... wanting, somehow. Like when you think something's too good to be true and you turn out to be right. What we had was hot, I can't deny that; you searched me, you worked me, and I loved it. But -- (Jesus this sounds lame and I'm sorry) -- I'm getting to that age where I need more from a relationship. Maybe I just expect too much, but I can't hide my dissatisfaction; that's not fair to me, and it sure isn't fair to you. There are people out there that can love you better than I can, and that's what you deserve. uoy tegrof reven ll'I, uoy tegrof reven ll'I. ;-)

Love, Clarke

Clarke B., Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

YEAH! MORE HOT MISSY ACTION FOR ME!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you even fit to kiss her feet?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The CD I have has three versions, two of which are pretty much identical, the other a little bit shorter, presumably the radio version. Each time I play it I listen to all three and I'm sad when it's over.

I love the sheer attention to detail.

Because of lyric changes elsewhere she changes 'chacha' from the line
'But before you come I need to shave my chacha'
into 'chocha' so that it rhymes with 'sofa' in the short version.

Does anyone else think the 'yessa masser' bit a a Tom and Jerry reference? I'm sure Mammy Two-shoes said stuff like that all the time, back in the day.

meirion john lewis (mei), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think that's the case, but her "funky fresh" does contain the line "cartoon like tom and jerry"

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yallz don't be frontin. U know my hoe Missy is off da hook. I think she lookz great in her video n I don't give a fuck what the wordz be.

That Ananova story has gone. What was it?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I have yet to hear the song but I hate it on principle of all the "What does "fremme neppa venette" mean???? "

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy has swindled me. The CD I got today only has two tracks on, both of which are on the album (Pussycat being the other one). And the video is for 4 My People, rather than Work It. Can't complain about the tune though.

Nick H, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy was going to give $1 million to anyone who could figure out what femme etc., actually meant. I don't know if they withdrew if becuase it was untrue or if Ananova doesn't keep stuff around for that long. Anyone seen this elsewhere?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Chiquita Bostick, Monday, 11 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently I represent a singularity in Western culture as the only person who doesn't like this song one friggin bit. Sorry.

nickalicious, Monday, 11 November 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ur retarded if u gotta argue over sum freakin lyrics to a song yeah the song kiks ass but u dont have to argue. Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics........Even if u win, ur still retarded

Haywood Jablome, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe you guys haven't figured out what Missy Elliot says in that song. It's so easy.....well maybe not that easy with the naked ear, but all it takes is to convert that song to a .wav file and load into into sound forge and reverse that part that's already reversed so it's normal to find out she's saying "put my thang down flip it and reverse it". Consider that a gift from a junior sound producer.

Daniel Ochoa, Saturday, 16 November 2002 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Woah, thanks man, we NEVER would have figured that out.

Dan I., Saturday, 16 November 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The Jaxx remix of "4 my people" was pretty darned good, too, wasn't it?

I'm still not tired of it.

man, Friday, 22 November 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I just want to let everyone behind work it know that this song inspired me to really please my man.!!!!!

Erica West, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"WORK IT"

CHORUS :

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it (Invert the sentence)
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it (Invert the sentence)

I'm French but I understood all the same that the last sentence of the chorus is inverted.
The sentence " It's your fremme neppa venette", it is just an imagination, it is necessary to invert it to understand.

Sorry for the faults that I made but I don't speak very well English.

SHURIK'N, Thursday, 28 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

VANESSA BOLTON, Monday, 2 December 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, I know that this whole lyrics thing is over...but I have a really funny comment to make. "It's your fremme neppa venette".....this is what my comment is about. I have a really cool mom (I'm 16 so this is monumental that a teenage girl will say this) and we were listening to this song on the radio and she is convinced that in Missy's jibrish she is saying "Are your hard nipples wet yet?" I think this just might be the funniest thing she has ever said. So I had to get on here and find out what she was really saying. So now I have to go and tell my mom that she was wrong about her nipple theory. I'm still laughing!

Meghan, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)
