i think there was a thread like this over at djh a while ago? i think some people referred to a qv track as "cod reggae".

one month passes...

I've started collating a lot of the suggestions on this thread into an epic dj mix. will try and get a YSI soon.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2010 08:54 (fifteen years ago)

Good thread. I actually made a little mix as intro music for a friend's band that starts off like this then goes dub, er then ends in Gregory Isaacs.

Chain Reaction - comprising Bobby Davis, Bruce Ruffin (no relation) and Dave Barker ('Dave' of '...and Ansel Collin')were a strange Philly type soul/ reggae crossover, with great singing - I have two LPs by them, one - Indebted to You - on Gull c 1976 and one a bit later - Chase a Miracle(?). When I got the latter I thought it was a different group of the same name: the first record could have come from Philly, the second unmistakably from JA via NW10...both fine in their own way, though.

sonofstan, Friday, 30 July 2010 09:51 (fifteen years ago)

Nice mix, Jamie! I think betablog tripled sales of that Steel an Skin album with this thread...

elephant rob, Friday, 30 July 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

Part one is gone. Any chance it's coming back?

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

*sigh* yeah, unfortunately soundcloud won't let me have enough space to host both mixes :-( if you have gmail i could try forwarding it to you?

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

or if anyone can host both, would be even better!

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure if it's more than 10mb it won't forward. if its under 100mb, mediafire works great.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

okay, i'm giving it a try. i will try and host these somewhere better soon cos i'm not ashamed to admit i'm really pleased with them.

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

"fly away/walking in the sunshine" has grown on me so much since i first heard it (thanks to this thread and making the mix).

In a similar vein, I've been kind of enjoying this recently. Don't know how disco-y they are, but the definition is intentionally loose.

Cool!

One day I'm going to edit the two mixes I posted upthread, cut out a bit of the fat and add a few latecomers for a single-cd version.

Right, it's high time I put this reggae-disco mix together properly. More suggestions please!

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:52 (fifteen years ago)

Joe Gibbs has some excellent almost entirely disco-based tunes. Bionic Encounter is like a dubbed-out version of "Runaway" by Loleatta Holloway. He also has a version of "I Want Your Love".

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:57 (fifteen years ago)

I was sure I'd posted this before (is there another disco reggae thread?):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1u_h090m-k

The "version" is even better but not on YouTube.

Lidl Monsters (seandalai), Thursday, 28 April 2011 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

Risco Connection also worth a mention here; is this the version of "It's My House" that jaime mentioned upthread?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61_Ceg8rRKg

Lidl Monsters (seandalai), Thursday, 28 April 2011 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Cheers - Not sure about either of these versions as I'm at work. The version of It's My House posted upthread was by Storm IIRC.

The Brentford versh of I Want Your Love is possibly the Joe Gibbs production I mentioned too.

!!!! What's it like? I need this.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Monday, 2 May 2011 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Google album title. First page of results.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 2 May 2011 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

Sadly (well not that sadly, but for the purposes of this thread), the "disco" part of the title only refers to where one would hear it, not the music style.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Monday, 2 May 2011 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

probably already said in this thread, but 'discomix' in reggae generally refers to a combination of the original vocal mix plus either the dub mix or the dj version.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 2 May 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

xpost yeah i hadnt listened to it before i posted! its a good comp, but not disco-y at all
