wonder what Ryan would have given He's The DJ I'm The Rapper back in the day, or was it too low on grandeur

well the big difference is that He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper actually WAS a wholly relatable album of suburban-friendly narrative rather than ungrateful, repellent narcissism, so likely it would have been dismissed for being fake and cheesy

haha totally, which is kinda what i meant by "low on grandeur"

peabo bison (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure Drake's is a rap album, but in the sense Toto IV is a rock album

shipz just retweeted someone claiming hating on drake is the equiv of hating on justin t circa justified, which works precisely up to the point that you listen to their music, so i did a smh and clicked on it to see who it was and it was the washington post's lead critic ;_; the weak critical game possibly distresses me more than the weakness of whatever game drake thinks he's playing.

though i did get a slightly confrontational tweet from some girl asking what kind of music DID i like then if not drake, and i seem to have got her into both lady leshurr and yelawolf! some good has come of this!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

i like CR as a critic up to a point, just when he's wrong i'm like oh fuck no

some dude, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

in the -ve column, i have received FIVE emails from drake's uk pr in the past two days :(

xp i'm not really familiar w/him at all

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

i can't remember who said this, but in some thread somebody said the problem with drake and wayne and nicki, and this type of punchlines in general is that the old school dudes used to deliver killer, amazing punchlines in this cool-ass, deadpan manner as if it was nothing but a thing, whereas this type of rhyming delivers super stupid and lame punchlines as if they were so fucking amazing

it's the stupidity coupled with the smug self regard* that i can't handle

*and maybe this part of it is jay's fault

Chris Richards is one of the few music writers out there I really dig; he seems pretty genuinely open-minded and enthusiastic about stuff.

Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

the problem is that Drake is a shitty rapper.

I have been forks-style since day one (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

xp i don't think that's really limited to old school dudes, more just any rappers who don't happen to be these shitheads

teflon donk (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah maybe yr right, but that got at the thing that irritates me so much about it

tbh you could do this kind of thing to a lot of good rappers too and it would still be funny.

its been said many times but the difference with drake is how he and others present him and OMG NEXT LEVEL SHIT

also i feel i need to say that for someone apparently trading on being some sort of attractive heartthrob, drake is REALLY UGLY IN THE FACE.

another point of difference between him and justin-circa-justified

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

does he seriously say "toodles, bitches"?"

if he does, its the first likable thing I've heard from him

da croupier, Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

second good thing to come of this - i never knew the etymology of "toodles"!

A shortened, more casual version of the French expression à tout à l'heure (Anglicized as "toodle-oo"), meaning goodbye

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

ryan dombal is basically US PR for drake

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

my favorite thing that he's ever written about drake, is this:

punchlines like "I really can't complain, everything's kosher/ Two thumbs up, Ebert and Roeper" may not be terribly complex, but Drake's laser-guided delivery turns them into automatic catch-phrases.

which, as i pointed out on so many shrimp, makes no sense, because EBERT AND ROEPER TURNED THE PHRASE INTO AN AUTOMATIC CATCH PHRASE, HENCE THE WHOLE FREAKIN REFERENCE

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

i want to go around irl ending all my conversations with people by looking them directly in the eye and saying "just do it" so people will then tell their friends "wow, jordan's laser-guided delivery really turned 'just do it' into an automatic catch-phrase."
