the word 'shaman' isn't used lightly, when it is used for members of Coil

Jhonn's gone, Peter's gone...but Danny Hyde's still around and um. To quote a friend on FB, "Danny Hyde used to be in COIL. Now he self-releases terrible music. But there is one saving grace: the MS Paint "artwork" for his releases is so terrible that it achieves outsider art brilliance."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

The first album wasn't terrible, but everything is specifically constructed for people who like Coil - except there's no spark.

StanM, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

If you are wondering why artists generally don't and shouldn't personally reply to critics, the criticism Ned quoted has been personally replied to by the artist on the coil mailing list. Not a good idea. Handbags at dawn @ the coil mailing list again.

Brainwashed is running a massive Coil Love's Secret Domain retrospective this week, including interviews with the surviving members who worked on LSD and about 10 different think-pieces on the album... worth a look for any fan I'd think

I've sometimes found that if it's on quietly in the background it seems to distort my perception even more than loud or on headphones.

^^^ this. It truly is spooky how, err, visceral this album is, even at low volumes. Magick!!

Also, today I'm thinking "Batwings (A Liminal Hymn)" is my all time favorite song.

Love love love Coil so much.

Just picked up Live One recently and it is so wonderful. They were really channeling something special on these nights, eh? Even more so than usual. "The Universe is a Haunted House" is incredible. £40 well spent. I can see this becoming one of my favourite CDs.

kraudive, Thursday, 8 November 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

just last night, I was walking around outside in the dark while listening to "The Universe is a Haunted House". The perfect way to listen to that song.

it's a tough call, but the album with "Broccoli" wins, so Vol. 1 by a hair. Tiny Golden Books and Batwings are two of the best things ever, though (along with their Vol. 1 counterparts Red Birds and The Dreamer Is Still Asleep).

money, chicken and other DNA (sleeve), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 22:45 (twelve years ago)

i love both but vol. 1 has more mindblowingly essential coil songs on it.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

yeah the two albums match up really closely in song-style. on reflection and having heard both albums straight through tonight, 1 is clearly superior, but for the first 3 tracks of Vol 2 you can be forgiven for thinking it might be quite close

Vol 1 has 4 absolutely incredible, all-time-great tracks on it and is seared into my mind. the other two songs are merely 'superb'. one of the best albums of the last 20 years

Would buy a box of the equinox/solstice singles, I guess they are just reissuing them separately though?

yeah I somehow missed this news as well, mmmm outtakes

money, chicken and other DNA (sleeve), Monday, 21 October 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)

So, wait, I'm confused. Did these come out already? Or is there an upcoming release date listed on the site that I missed somehow?

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)

i'd long been wondering if coil's music would ever be available again after they both died. delighted to hear it will be.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 01:36 (twelve years ago)

This has been announced on the mailing list in January 2013 but there's been no news since.

BTW, Time Machines 2 is rumored to be nearly ready at http://thresholdhouse.com/

StanM, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

I am surprised by this announcement as, to my knowledge, there have been a lot of disputes between surviving members of the inner Coil family about which label to work with and how best to carry the legacy forward into the present

the tune was space, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)

Hence the lack of news since the initial announcement?

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah, I'm wondering if the announcement is itself an attempt to assert some pre-emptive market claim / dominance thing

there have been some kinda suspicious cashgrab bootlegs emanating from other quarters, much to everybody's chagrin (not brainwashed, I hasten to add- jon wouldn't do that) and the whole trouble with it being posthumous is that it's hard to interpret what geff and sleazy would have wanted

I won't say more but this whole thing is painful

the tune was space, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

xpost

Well, yes, Brainwashed has the correspondence to prove that Sleazy wanted them to reissue material, but the executor of the will is someone else, officially. No idea if they're talking to each other or if there's an understanding/deal (e.g. reissuing previously released material by Brainwashed, issuing previously unreleased material by Thresholdhouse?)

StanM, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

I'm wondering if the announcement is itself an attempt to assert some pre-emptive market claim / dominance thing

it sure reads this way now that I take another look at it...

money, chicken and other DNA (sleeve), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)

i hope there are vinyl reissues at some point too as all my coil records are fairly worn out and i don't really want them on cd. if they're not, it's something i'd love to do but it is no doubt a minefield not worth crossing to look into it.

Coil / Nine Inch Nails | Recoiled

“Recoiled” is a rambunctious alchemy, of magikal Coil sensibilities and hi-tech home circa 90’s mixing technique, all fused in the cave-like early studios of Danny Hyde / Peter Christopherson. These were the unrestrained PRE- BIG studio- mix downs, of four songs which long time Coil admirer / collaborator Trent Reznor requested Coil to remix. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde / Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations, molding them into these master versions. ”Recoiled” includes a fuller, more opulent version of the track ‘Closer’, which eventually made it onto the opening credits to the movie “SE7EN”. These 5 lengthy compositions are pre-Ableton / laptop generation type priest song creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create bespoke effects. These legendary tracks were always rumoured to exist and, only the due diligence of a dedicated NIN forum who hunted them down, are released/unleashed for your listening pleasure. 4 of the tracks were released on the download-only “Uncoiled”. A bonus, previously unheard track from the same sessions closes the album. Jhonn Balance is also manifest on this gilded constellation. Beautifully remastered for CD / vinyl. CD in digipak.

StanM, Tuesday, 3 December 2013 08:26 (twelve years ago)

yes, yes, "Breaking The Law" and "Painkiller", but what do they mean in that press text?

Who's running the Threshold House shop (at http://threshold.greedbag.com/) nowadays? Is it legit? I have to admit I'm pretty confused by the rights situation, especially after the Brainwashed announcement...
