Weird. I put a YouTube link (i.e. where the screen should pop up) in here, but it doesn't show.

ditto on "private eyes"
that track is FIRE

archipelago (archipelago), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

John Oates amiably confessed in their "Behind the Music" segment that he and Daryl Hall made, "without exception," the worst videos of all time.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Their absolute worst video -- "Jingle Bell Rock." The look of 'delighted surprise' on Oates's face at one point might be the single worst acting job by anyone in the history of creation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

love the "Private Eyes" video, with the bug-eyed John peering out from behind Daryl's shoulders, in sync with the handclaps...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

>"private eyes"

Uh wha?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

"You Make My Dreams Come True" is such a fantastic song. I just listened to that one yesterday and it was totally killing me- the "rock" breakdown part is so tuff.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

The only way to unite ILM titans is to lock them in a karaoke room with H&O tunes.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

As the biggest H&O fan on ILM, I get to play Simon Cowell for the karaoke, then. (The superspecial encore will be me taking on "Your Imagination.")

I actually kinda like the one for I Can't Go for That. The rest of them make me laugh.

My favorite part is in Say It Isn't So, when a swirling light makes Darryl Hall's face look like a totally fucked mask. That or the really, really long table.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

youtube is perfectly fine. it's ysi/rapidshare/zshare etc that is not.

How about bandongo.com? :)

All the ILM All-Stars pinch-hitting on this thread.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 May 2007 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

heard 'i can't go for that' out on friday night!

haitch, Monday, 28 May 2007 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

there is nothing "indefensible" about hall and oates. "i can't go for that" is a funky ass song.

deej, Monday, 28 May 2007 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for reviving this Alfred, cause I would have done it myself pretty soon (or maybe that other thread that asks for a reevaluation of H&O). I honestly don't know why I've found myself so fascinated with these guys right now. I mean, throughout the 80's I didn't dislike them, but they were just kindof...there. I only bought like maybe three of their singles, tops.

I listened to the War Babies album earlier tonight but I only really like the first half. It just gets to heavy and proggy and concepty after awhile, stretches my patience. But that is probably Todd Rundgren's problem rather than theirs.

I heard "Family Man" for the first time since it came out tonight and I swear to god, I do not remember that song at all even though I know I heard it when it was a hit. It's so weird.

So I am going to seek out some of their 80's albums cause I really do want to hear more. And you were right, Alfred about those tracks you recommended from H20, they were quite nice.

Bimble, Monday, 28 May 2007 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

In the case of "Family Man" I like Mike Oldfield's original version better. Hall & Oates had several great songs anyway though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 May 2007 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oh so it's a cover then, that rather helps me. Thanks.

how's the live show these days? they're playing at palace of fine arts in sf, but the photo on the ad shows them in "acoustic sunrise" mode. worth it?

anyone remember the Hall & Oates as council workers (or something) sketches on Big Train?

-- stevem (blueski),

I do - I especially like their canteen debrief with Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart - 'I mean, they, they can't even afford a new pair of shades...'.

one year passes...

Thanks to my wonderful friend who encouraged me to buy the new issue of Mojo (god where would I have been without him? I really needed the new issue of Mojo, just the shot in the arm I needed) I learned that Hall & Oates have a new live album out with some DVD accompaniment. Well I sortof stared at the review for awhile before I realized "wait a minute! LA live at the Troubadour! That's where I saw them last year! Holy shit!" I paid a buttload of money to go to that gig, too. Glad it's a live album now.

Fever Pitch, Bitch (Bimble), Sunday, 14 June 2009 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

great album tracks on H2O.. "Crime Pays" "Guessing Games" and "Delayed Reaction" especially.

There is nothing indefensible about H&O

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 14 June 2009 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Alex in NYC OTM. It's been really interesting watching them recover their reputation over the last few years, but it's entirely deserved

Billy Pilgrim, Sunday, 14 June 2009 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

I started picking up H&O here and there a few years ago, and used to describe it as a guilty pleasure. Now it's like, "If you don't get what's good about H&O, you don't know what th' heck you're talking about."

Brundlefly (kenan), Sunday, 14 June 2009 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

I saw H&O open for Lou Reed at the Felt Forum in NYC in 75? Can't say they left much of an impression.
I was only 14. Anyone else there?

they were my first concert; the "ooh yeah" tour when i was 6

guammls (QE II), Sunday, 14 June 2009 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

The case against Hall and Oates has to be related to their 80s ubiquity. I never lived through any of that and as I discovered their albums in my parents collection was completely psyched by all the great pop music I discovered full of awesome hooks, great singing and some killer synth sounds.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 14 June 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

Really solid soul songwriting, too. Complete working knowledge of Philly and Memphis, it would seem.

Brundlefly (kenan), Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

I was around during their eighties ubiquity, and since I didn't have MTV I had to rely on the radio, and they fit in nicely with Duran Duran, Bonnie Tyler, Prince, and everyone else.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 June 2009 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus fucking Christ are you kidding? I'm not worthy. We're not worthy, folks.

Fever Pitch, Bitch (Bimble), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

My mom used to have the Voices album on cassette and occasionally blasted it in the car. At the time that album epitomized embarrassing music only your mom would want to play with the windows down - seemingly just to embarrass you. Didn't take me too long to realize that it was just another case of my mom having better taste than I ever would.

Cunga, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

"Big Kids"!

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, from everything I know about my mom's music tastes she's like the Boomer-era female voice of the "Losing My Edge" narrator.

"I remember being friends with everyone in Love and digging Forever Changes...when I was 14."

"I was there when Randy Newman sold albums out of the trunk of his car, and we all thought he was this funny Jewish piano man..."

"I remember when Hall and Oates were uncool for awhile, and I still flew their flag."

Cunga, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

I never thought Hall and Oates were uncool. It depends on what your reference point is. If all you listened to were headbanger records, I guess so.

like, COMPUTERS (u s steel), Monday, 15 June 2009 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

I read an interview somewhere with a bigshot record producer, who said that he'd only ever found two people who could reliably nail a vocal on the first take: the guy from Mr. Mister, and Daryl Hall.

To me, the key to that clip is when the cat tilts its head back. That's when you know kitty's really feeling the music.

I wonder who his history bitches are and if they approve (Bimble), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

great album tracks on H2O.. "Crime Pays" "Guessing Games" and "Delayed Reaction" especially

I wrote a few years ago that Marshall Crenshaw would have killed for the hooks in "Delayed Reaction."

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

might as well add "Open All Night" to that list..

"Italian Girls" isn't really my thing, however.

hall and oates? what's the TS thinking?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 7 August 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

I expect the going-on-six-years revival to continue now that (500) Days of Summer turned "You Make My Dreams" into a dance routine.

Anatomy of a Morbius (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 August 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

keyboard cat is who did it~!

omar little, Friday, 7 August 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

They were....ok last night. At first they came across as detached, Hall seated, strumming an acoustic, seemingly irritated with the stage mix. Oates more or less disappeared into the background after two solo turns at the mic. Hall was having trouble with the high notes, and Oates' voice was scratchy. But Hall warmed up to the crowd, his vocals stronger as the set went on. He finished the show at the keyboards, standing, rocking "I Can't Go For That." (An unlikely showstopper.) There's a boxed set in the works.

Thus Sang Freud, Friday, 7 August 2009 12:31 (sixteen years ago)

eMusic has the H&O catalog now.
