It can't be just me that thinks that the eventual Fresh & Onlys singles/odds & ends compilation will be fucking glorious.

chromecassettes, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

Saw this in the latest Eclipse Records update, figured it was worth mentioning on the thread:
*Acoustic Family Creeps - Acoustic Family Creeps one-sided LP $15.99 (Acoustic Family Creeps)
"One sided, bootleg-style twelve inch that may very well be Brookylns own Woods, caught live in Europe. No listed record label, no B-side, no repress. Weve seen these for sale at Woods shows so they may be legit, although the world is ripe with mystery. Very limited."

Trip Maker, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I have that 12". Got it in Monorailmusic in Glasgow.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 June 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for the heads-up on the Acoustic Family Creeps

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 11 June 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

saw a used copy of the folk spectre lp the other day for cheap, and picked it up due to mentions on this thread. sounding great atm, very aptly named. cool combo of dead c./shadow ring dust scrape and groovier fsa/tower recordings tones. both spacious and crushed. thanks for the heads up.

contenderizer, Friday, 25 June 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

did anybody go to the fest?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

I'd be interested to hear how it was. friend of mine is planning to try to go next year. saw Woods on Saturday in Manhattan, decent set but short ... only played about 60 mins including a couple long jams that were borderline filler. (to be fair one of the jams toward the end of the set was p killer and I do like that space-rock side of them as much as the song-y side.) one-song encore was just "Military Madness" and then they're out.

dmr, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

srsly though, what is with the mouth-mask that one guy wears. I hear it's a distorted microphone or something? shades of Frank Booth.

dmr, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

i am planning on it for next year, stayed there early this june and it was hella chill

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

er i mean late june

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

xp lucas sings into a pair of headphones hooked up to some thingamajigs.

ps an hour is not a 'short set' unless you're nick cave or something

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, and hour seems standard for an indie rock gig? not everyone can be guided by voices or dead moon.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

woodsist really snuck up on me over the last year. i think they send a ton of promos down this way because i don't have much trouble finding their stuff used.

listening to ganglians, purling hiss, ducktails, real estate all the damn time.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

heard great things from norcal ppl about the fest this year and last year too, the henry miller library is one of the best venues in the world imo (good booking too, whoever got cluster to come there a+ good work)

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:26 (fourteen years ago)

the two white fence albums are sooo great

woodsist really snuck up on me over the last year

me too, was surprised to see how much of their catalogue i've been getting into

rice-a-roni eyes (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

an hour is way too long for a set imo

rice-a-roni eyes (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

agreed

the wheelie king (wk), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

i was gonna say but then i remembered seeing AMT with ned

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

but i did take a 30 min breather about an hour in

honestly though for 90% of bands 30 mins is enough for me

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

the recent ducktails and spectre folk records are p gd great

Monstrous TumTum (Lamp), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 05:56 (fourteen years ago)

1. I'm comparing it to last time I saw em when they did a 3-song encore and then a big jam w/ extra dudes from the other band on stage. so just one song for the encore seemed skimpy.
2. 60 mins is like the minimum set required for a headliner imo.
3. they have a rly big catalog but filled the set with longer free-form jams (which, again, some of em were good) so in the whole set they played maybe ... 7 songs?

Ducktails opened this show and was kinda bad live. I like the records pretty well. White Fence was on earlier but I didn't get there in time. I wanted White Fence to be second-last instead of third-last.

dmr, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, and hour seems standard for an indie rock gig?

I dunno, I expect between 60 and 90 mins for the headliner. Maybe I'm off base here.

Also have different standards for like, a basement show or something. This was at Bowery Ballroom.

dmr, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

90 mins is waaaaay too long for a set imo

Monstrous TumTum (Lamp), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

haha all right. usually i'm on the other side of this argument telling my friend why most double albums suck and it's not "better value" to get 2 hours of filler.

dmr, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

I'd count myself as a fan of Woods, Real Estate, Eat Skull Psych. Horseshit, Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, Moon Duo... not sure which of those have released stuff on the Woodsist label that I've heard, but I enjoy all of 'em to some degree.

― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, June 7, 2010 9:04 AM (1 year ago)

fast-forward a year, i still really like Woods, fucking LOVE moon duo (new album = immense) but i've recently sold off my blank dogs, crystal stilts, that real estate lp, eat skull and psych horsesh!t. not playing 'em ever really :/

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 22 August 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

but then i'm selling off lots of stuff, so

six months pass...

sick lineup. I might try to actually go to this. probably a pipe dream. I could see all these bands easily in NYC anyway but not all at once.

Pity I'll be visiting home a couple of weeks after that. (Home being Carmel, not Big Sur, but anyway.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 March 2012 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

I went a lil while ago when they had a p similar lineup and it was a great show

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 07:15 (fourteen years ago)

whole lotta beautiful people

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah great lineup. i haven't heard from this label in a while

flopson, Friday, 9 March 2012 07:37 (fourteen years ago)

as long as my friend is able to get tix this afternoon, I'm going. so stoked. they go on sale at noon Pacific.

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

never heard Mantles but other than that I like every single band on that list

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

never heard Mantles

?!

Arguably the best band on that list.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 9 March 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

That is a little weird. Seems like a band you would dig, DMR. LP on Siltbreeze a few years ago is nice, haven't listened in a while.

Trip Maker, Friday, 9 March 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

I'll have to check em out! honestly I have never heard the name, and I generally check for Siltbreeze.

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

though personally i would argue that they're not the best band on the list, this song is just fantastic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acFsHev3mQQ

flopson, Friday, 9 March 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

their singles are good as well - worth searching out.

skip, Friday, 9 March 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

weird bill for Hurley to play on...

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 9 March 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

I love every band on that list (my blind spot is White Fence), but I think I would agree that The Mantles are my favorite of all of 'em.
My other favorite amazing Mantles tune is "Raspberry Thighs." They're seriously due for another LP!

Walter Galt, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

the Mantles are on Spotify so I've got my afternoon-at-work listening lined up

White Fence is cool lo-fi psych, recommended if you like Sic Alps et al. I like the first self-titled record better than the second ("White Fence Is Growing Faith")

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

never picked up that mantles LP, cuz i wasn't convinced by the "burden" single from aught-seven (reverb-jangle burnout). "don't like" is fucking great!

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

lol "don't like"

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah, dig basically every band in that lineup, and several are among my very favorites CIA (ohsees! hurley! arrows!)

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Out of all those bands Mantles are the least active and rarely tour so they are even more of a "get" IMO. White Fence albums are very nice, but their live show is a lot more aggressive (full band) and I dig it. If I was in Cali I would definitely go to this. Maybe Hurley is gonna do an album on Woodsist? Only thing missing is Some MV/EE or Matt Valentine solo action.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

man, they should really do a WC tour w that shit. this summer. daytime shows @ outdoor venues. would fly a kite.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe Hurley is gonna do an album on Woodsist?

In the press release it said something like "this year we invited some of our favorite bands to come hang out"

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

meaning Hurley and Pierced Arrows I think

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

uh, anyway, i have been listening to "don't lie" over and over again for quite a while. nice accidental (?) fringe benefit of lofi gleverb camping style is that it sounds boss through shitty computer speakers.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

I am prob not as well versed as a lot of other people here but that's what I got

super helpful, thanks

if I'm able to swing it I'd probably be getting in fairly last-minute so I think I'd need something I can reserve in advance

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

then I would say Pfeiffer #1 and Fernwood or whatever other private site around there (there are a couple right next to it) #2

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

wish I could go to this

fuck deathcore and metalcore (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 9 March 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

Pfeiffer is already booked up through October if I was filling out the online rez thing right

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

following up on mantles talk upthread, i believe they have a slumberland lp on the way later this year

always blows my mind a bit that mantles dude is also personal of pizzas fame

some crap (electricsound), Saturday, 10 March 2012 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

lol i didnt know that

flopson, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

personal & the pizzas are like only the fifth best pizza punk band

flopson, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

i was disappointed that when i saw them they didn't do very many songs about pizza, like they might have done one.

sarahell, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

slippery slopes - pizza i'm against it & the ep it's on is my fav http://www.discogs.com/Slippery-Slopes-Sad-Tugs/release/2755493

four months pass...

so excited for Woodsist Fest. can't believe it's in like 2 weeks.

Michael Hurley had to drop out so they added Sun Araw. Also a King Tuff pre-fest show on the Friday but me and my friend are staying in SF that night so we'll miss that one.

if anyone is going and wants to meet up, email me at dmr3345 at gmail, I'd be down to hang out

dmr, Monday, 16 July 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

one year passes...

The record by The Woolen Men has been a consistent favorite this year.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

That Woolen Men record is quite the sleeper hit. I went to Woodsist fest this year. Man it was literally the chillest thing ever.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 7 November 2013 03:03 (twelve years ago)

my friend JT who I went with last year went again. I was kinda jealous even though (imo) the lineup wasn't as good.

PAINTED SHRINES Debut Album Heaven and Holy Out Today on Woodsist

New Collaboration Featuring Jeremy Earl of Woods & Glenn Donaldson of Skygreen Leopards / The Reds, Pinks & Purples

Oor Neechy, Friday, 5 March 2021 16:34 (five years ago)

It's very Woods-y which is totally a good thing. Breezy and fun. Though Woods have a more interesting rhythm to them imo

black dice live ft. jerry garcia (rizzx), Saturday, 6 March 2021 09:12 (five years ago)

the reds pinks and purples record last year was amazing, this doesnt quite reach those heights but it's very pleasant. agree that it feels less idk rangy or loose than woods, the reds pinks purples drum machine pop aesthetic tamps things down a bit.

adam, Tuesday, 9 March 2021 15:33 (five years ago)

I enjoyed it

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 9 March 2021 16:35 (five years ago)

is anyone going to the fest this weekend? do people need rain panchos?
