"Mr. Schreiber, I could forgive your arrogant and misguided music reviews as simple trendy garbage, if you weren't so damned earnest and trying so hard to be serious. If you would simply stop trying to please the masses with your reviews and jumping on every passing bandwagon, perhaps it would make your publication more readable. As it is, your reviews smack of one who has given in to the corporate hype machine behind all of the current best- selling music groups. thank you for your time. P.S. stop stealing your reviews from rolling stone!" -Garrett Moser

two weeks pass...

this opening paragraph made me lol:

Are Wolf Parade a supergroup? Google seems to think so: It returns some 70,000 results on the matter, including several from this very website. Certainly their lineup is stacked enough for the distinction. Between Spencer Krug, Dan Boeckner, and Dante DeCaro, I count half-a-dozen notable bands past or present, and drummer Arlen Thompson has put in work with Arcade Fire

Well somebody had to be the new Firefall, I guess.

paul thompson is maybe my favorite pitchfork writer, but i thought this statement about the national was a bit weird coming from a guy who was gushing about titus andronicus just a page earlier

All the things that chafe me about the National-- that they give voice to an urban middle-class male malaise that feels like entitlement at best and whininess at worst

now, titus andro album is my favorite of the year (decade!), but still

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:33 (thirteen years ago) link

There they go again with the class nonsense.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:35 (thirteen years ago) link

certainly on a microcosmic level, the point of views of titus dude and national dude are certainly different in regards to "entitlement", as i guess you could argue (and at this point in my life i certainly would probably agree) that the bitterness/sadness/whininess of titus andronicus feels more earned & appropriate seeing as he's coming from the point of view of a mid 20 year old being sort of crushed by the pressure and anxiety of being that age (while still also touching on getting drunk and fucked up with friends cuz you can still do that) whereas the national dude is singing for like, sad ad execs and investment bankers, but maybe i'm overly stereotyping or will have more sympathy when i'm that age

but in the grand scheme of things, you're really going right down the line of "urban middle class..." (i'll just come out and say it, white) "...male malaise"

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Maybe he sees Titus Andronicus as suburban middle-class male malaise. Maybe that is way different and much better to sing about.

Evan, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:43 (thirteen years ago) link

where is that sentence about the nat'l from exactly?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:46 (thirteen years ago) link

rosklide review, page 3 i think

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:47 (thirteen years ago) link

thx--i'm a little bit done with that sentiment being party line on the nat'l. at least on the new record i hear more blackened humor than anything.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it almost seemed like a concession of sorts, like you HAVE to criticize them in that way if you're going to criticize them at all -- i find the end of that statement (about melodies) to be much more compelling, cuz i think that's mostly where they fail (not melodies specifically but just as a band playing music)

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah--i think they're solid melodically but the intentional wallpapery quality of their music takes some time to get with

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 03:01 (thirteen years ago) link

the bitterness/sadness/whininess of titus andronicus feels more earned & appropriate seeing as he's coming from the point of view of a mid 20 year old being sort of crushed by the pressure and anxiety of being that age (while still also touching on getting drunk and fucked up with friends cuz you can still do that) whereas the national dude is singing for like, sad ad execs and investment bankers...

i get the distinction, but don't see how the former is more earned & appropriate.

good news if you wear cargo shorts (contenderizer), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 03:23 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah idk -- i'm prob just biased because i'm that age and i identify with it more

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 03:25 (thirteen years ago) link

You'd be surprised how young a lot of investment bankers are.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 04:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I get the distinction too but I don't think the National have moved on from that vantage point yet - I get the feeling that now they're in their early 30s and expected things to change but are still being crushed by the pressure & anxiety of things not getting any better despite that being the common wisdom. and they're still getting drunk and fucked up w/ friends. not sure how ad execs and ibankers play into this dynamic at all.
