disappointed that there's no track named "what does god need with a starship?" on the tracklist, tbh

original bgm, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

oh man, I shouldn't have directly linked to maiden's site. reloading this thread makes a request to their server now which is already being bombarded by crazy fans.

if you're a mod, feel free to swap the img for a link. sorry!

I'm supposed to review the Iron Maiden for a certain distinguished publication, but I've yet to receive my watermark in the mail. I look forward to it.

Cool stuff! Looking forward to your write-up, Jeff.

"El Dorado" holds up tremendously a couple days removed from my initial listens. Smith brings the 70s hard rock riffs on this track, that's for sure...it's no surprise that Maiden went back to being awesome the day he returned to the band.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

Looking forward to picking up the new Nachtmystium, and perhaps the new Watain too, later today.

Fucking awesome cover!

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, that cover is pretty great. I've never even heard a Maiden record, but I'll probably be starting with that one.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Starting with reformed/reunion albums by classic bands with huge back catalogs = usually dud. I mean, if you wanted to check out the Stooges for the first time, would you really go pick up a shiny new copy of The Weirdness and expect to be awed?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

You're right.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

Really? No snarky/imagebomb/lolfest ksh circa 2010 reply?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

iron maiden are not reformed or reunited.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

I try my best to keep that stuff out of Rolling Metal.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

ksh -

The Maiden album to start with is probably Live After Death, because it's simultaneously a best-of and proof that they're a world-crushingly awesome live act. After that, dig into the '80s catalog. Everything from the s/t debut through Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is good to great.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe we need a Lolling Metal thread...

xp

The Number of The Beast was the one I started with thanks to "Run To The Hills" on MTV. It's a great, fun entry point, with several memorable songs, though my favorite ended up being Piece Of Mind with the improved drumming and overall awesome playing.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Maiden's last album is fucking ace and, arguably, the best thing they've done since Powerslave. So it's not really that mad a comment. And what Unperson said about Live After Death, the first Maiden album I bought when it came out. Although my mum wasn't keen on the in between song swearing.

They have a pretty spinal tap-esque list on the sleeve letting you know how many gallons of OJ they drank and how many miles of toilet paper they used on the entire tour.

Duran (Doran), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks, unperson!

For those not following along, over on the Nachtmystium thread we have been talking about Taylor Swift and a dog that looks like Blake Judd.

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

Taylor Swift

a dog that looks like Blake Judd.

^ referring to two diff people iirc ^

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

imo the 2-disc best of is a perfect maiden intro

they are the fucking best

but then again Killers is phenomenal and you could argue that to hear a little Di'anno style and then what came next would be a cool way to go

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think i've ever gotten into an artist via a best of before -- i usually head for the consensus "classic" pick first or dive in with their latest release, depending

ksh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I was gonna recommend killers too. kinda punk/kinda thin lizzy/completely awesome. then proceed chronologically to tons and tons of classic records.

original bgm, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

I agree with Phil, Live After Death would be a phonomenal album to start with. But yeah, one cannot ignore the Di'Anno stuff, which is classic in its own right. Much more confrontational than theatrical.

original bgm, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

I really hope the new one is less underwhelming than A Matter of Life and Death. I'm a little worried just because the song lengths seem longer like on the last one, but hopefully that freaky album cover portends good things.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not allowed to talk about it for a full month. That's pretty much torture for anyone with a blog & twitter.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

Aw, you can tell us...

no time like the present - this is a band whose best-of really gives you a sense of just how good they are, how many bullets they have in the belt. but do get Killers also.

nachtmystium real badass last night. even more excited to pick up new album now; also watain.

...Funtown. (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

hey did you guys who read decibel see my interview with my pal mary in the newest issue? probably the one and only interview that i will ever conduct! though i hope they run with my metal moms idea and have other people do them. mary was my inspiration for that. they even used the photo i took of her at my record store.

(when i first started doing stuff for decibel they asked me to interview some band - kylesa? - and i actually got as far as e-mailing the band and then i remembered that i really didn't want to do stuff like that. so i haven't. i'm not a journalist and i like to have as little contact with musicians as possible as a reviewer.)

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

posting a moby video on the metal thread is a new low. even for you, girly man!

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

With a nice mom like that, how could her child be evil enough for metal? She seems like a sweetheart.

Brad C., Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

Just read that this morning, she's an awesome mom! Also more pictures of metal dudes in their childhood Sesame Street costumes please!

So I'm loving the new Watain, but after reading the interviews in the new Decibel and on IO, I'm not such a big fan of them when they aren't making music.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 June 2010 04:06 (sixteen years ago)

io interview confirmed my love tbh

...Funtown. (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 June 2010 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

I'd like to see a metal moms feature about Watain, preferably with childhood corpsepaint photos.

Brad C., Thursday, 10 June 2010 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

My story on Fear Factory...I didn't read the Decibel cover story on them, so I have no idea whether Cazares' allegations came up therein.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 10 June 2010 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

io interview confirmed my love tbh

I don't know, their whole "we're soooooo evil, we're soooooooooo evil" schtick just rubs me the wrong way. Of course some would argue thats the point, but the stronger they deny that its all an act - the more I'm inclined to read it as such.

i mean

...Funtown. (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

Are we missing part of your post?

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with schtick (hello, I am a metal fan), but trying to convince me that you actually spend weeks sleeping in the filth of slaughtered animals? No thanks.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

but that is schtik?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Are we talking about Watain? The feature made the dude out to be pretty sincere, tbh.

ksh, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

The Decibel cover story, that is.

ksh, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Decibel's not in the business of deflating bands' mythologies, as far as I can tell.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

What would it mean for a writer to "deflate" their "mythology"? I mean, the Watain dude seems to just be saying where he's coming from, and the writer's trying to present that in an interesting way. I don't see how someone could "deflate" what the guy's saying without pulling a sort of "This dude's full of shit" move, and there seems to be no ground for doing that, really.
