man I don't agree with you at all & would be shocked if I ever met anybody who did on this question, but I gotta show for-real-no-joke respect for a guy voicing the opinion that Terror Twilight is the best Pavement album! I do love Carrot Rope to bits

so far i've heard all the Pavement LPs through Brighten The Corners, and Crooked Rain, hands down, wins for me. but I still need to listen to Terror Twilight

"El Dorado" holds up tremendously a couple days removed from my initial listens. Smith brings the 70s hard rock riffs on this track, that's for sure...it's no surprise that Maiden went back to being awesome the day he returned to the band.

Looking forward to picking up the new Nachtmystium, and perhaps the new Watain too, later today.

Starting with reformed/reunion albums by classic bands with huge back catalogs = usually dud. I mean, if you wanted to check out the Stooges for the first time, would you really go pick up a shiny new copy of The Weirdness and expect to be awed?

The Maiden album to start with is probably Live After Death, because it's simultaneously a best-of and proof that they're a world-crushingly awesome live act. After that, dig into the '80s catalog. Everything from the s/t debut through Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is good to great.

Maybe we need a Lolling Metal thread...

The Number of The Beast was the one I started with thanks to "Run To The Hills" on MTV. It's a great, fun entry point, with several memorable songs, though my favorite ended up being Piece Of Mind with the improved drumming and overall awesome playing.

Maiden's last album is fucking ace and, arguably, the best thing they've done since Powerslave. So it's not really that mad a comment. And what Unperson said about Live After Death, the first Maiden album I bought when it came out. Although my mum wasn't keen on the in between song swearing.

They have a pretty spinal tap-esque list on the sleeve letting you know how many gallons of OJ they drank and how many miles of toilet paper they used on the entire tour.

i don't think i've ever gotten into an artist via a best of before -- i usually head for the consensus "classic" pick first or dive in with their latest release, depending

yeah, I was gonna recommend killers too. kinda punk/kinda thin lizzy/completely awesome. then proceed chronologically to tons and tons of classic records.

I agree with Phil, Live After Death would be a phonomenal album to start with. But yeah, one cannot ignore the Di'Anno stuff, which is classic in its own right. Much more confrontational than theatrical.

I really hope the new one is less underwhelming than A Matter of Life and Death. I'm a little worried just because the song lengths seem longer like on the last one, but hopefully that freaky album cover portends good things.

hey did you guys who read decibel see my interview with my pal mary in the newest issue? probably the one and only interview that i will ever conduct! though i hope they run with my metal moms idea and have other people do them. mary was my inspiration for that. they even used the photo i took of her at my record store.

(when i first started doing stuff for decibel they asked me to interview some band - kylesa? - and i actually got as far as e-mailing the band and then i remembered that i really didn't want to do stuff like that. so i haven't. i'm not a journalist and i like to have as little contact with musicians as possible as a reviewer.)
