I think I better check out Kurt Vile then. Never heard Ariel Pink either so i guess i better get to it. Magic Lantern are awesome. Funnily enough i couldnt get into the psychedelic horseshit stuff i heard.

been interesting to watch the shift from the more "difficult" drone/noise-leaning woodsist circa 06/07 -- putting out stuff by racoo-oo-oon, night wounds and blues control -- to the more garage/pop oriented woodsist of the last couple years.

yeah, but it seems a natural shift though.

I'd count myself as a fan of Woods, Real Estate, Eat Skull Psych. Horseshit, Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, Moon Duo... not sure which of those have released stuff on the Woodsist label that I've heard, but I enjoy all of 'em to some degree.

Methinks all of those have released at least one thing on Woodsist.

Oh yeah, Sean OTM--that Folk Spectre LP on woodsist is great! And the new one, on Arbitrary Signs, is even better.

it's funny when i was talking to Jeremy last time he brought in records, he was talking about how the Hello Sunshine imprint was going to be for the dronier, weirder, more 'out' side of things, and how ironic it is that just a few years ago woodsist was putting out Pocahaunted records and shit. ("peyote road" is actually prob the best thing I've heard from them.)

Pete Nolan, btw, is severely awesome. I think he has been in something like 73 bands over the last few years.

it's not often that somebody builds a new wing on the psych mansion, these guys were prolly my fave going concern in '07

and I like raccoo-oo-oon a lot but was not a big fan of the mythos folkways series

I side with Edward where Blues Control is concerned. It thrills me when a band can take recognizeable influences & mold them into a new form.

saw a used copy of the folk spectre lp the other day for cheap, and picked it up due to mentions on this thread. sounding great atm, very aptly named. cool combo of dead c./shadow ring dust scrape and groovier fsa/tower recordings tones. both spacious and crushed. thanks for the heads up.

I'd be interested to hear how it was. friend of mine is planning to try to go next year. saw Woods on Saturday in Manhattan, decent set but short ... only played about 60 mins including a couple long jams that were borderline filler. (to be fair one of the jams toward the end of the set was p killer and I do like that space-rock side of them as much as the song-y side.) one-song encore was just "Military Madness" and then they're out.

srsly though, what is with the mouth-mask that one guy wears. I hear it's a distorted microphone or something? shades of Frank Booth.

yeah, and hour seems standard for an indie rock gig? not everyone can be guided by voices or dead moon.

woodsist really snuck up on me over the last year. i think they send a ton of promos down this way because i don't have much trouble finding their stuff used.

listening to ganglians, purling hiss, ducktails, real estate all the damn time.

heard great things from norcal ppl about the fest this year and last year too, the henry miller library is one of the best venues in the world imo (good booking too, whoever got cluster to come there a+ good work)

the two white fence albums are sooo great

honestly though for 90% of bands 30 mins is enough for me

the recent ducktails and spectre folk records are p gd great

1. I'm comparing it to last time I saw em when they did a 3-song encore and then a big jam w/ extra dudes from the other band on stage. so just one song for the encore seemed skimpy.
2. 60 mins is like the minimum set required for a headliner imo.
3. they have a rly big catalog but filled the set with longer free-form jams (which, again, some of em were good) so in the whole set they played maybe ... 7 songs?

Ducktails opened this show and was kinda bad live. I like the records pretty well. White Fence was on earlier but I didn't get there in time. I wanted White Fence to be second-last instead of third-last.

fast-forward a year, i still really like Woods, fucking LOVE moon duo (new album = immense) but i've recently sold off my blank dogs, crystal stilts, that real estate lp, eat skull and psych horsesh!t. not playing 'em ever really :/

but then i'm selling off lots of stuff, so

sick lineup. I might try to actually go to this. probably a pipe dream. I could see all these bands easily in NYC anyway but not all at once.

if you head up to big sur early or want to just try for it I would rec that you get a first come first serve site at andrew molera. This is prob the cheapest option and while the sites themselves are just like in an empty meadow its right next to a beach and close to the library.

Fernwood is pretty alright for a private campsite so I would hop on it if there aren't any state park options. Pfeiffer's incredible if you can get a spot in the redwoods, but this fills up super quick, may be some availability now. These three are all pretty close to the venue. Kirk creek is generally considered the best park to camp at of all of these but it's about 40 mins to an hour from the venue and not easy to get a site there. There are couple other public and private places that are cheap that I've never stayed at, but I know some of the other state ones are kind of inland and a bitch to get to.

The record by The Woolen Men has been a consistent favorite this year.

That Woolen Men record is quite the sleeper hit. I went to Woodsist fest this year. Man it was literally the chillest thing ever.

my friend JT who I went with last year went again. I was kinda jealous even though (imo) the lineup wasn't as good.

It's very Woods-y which is totally a good thing. Breezy and fun. Though Woods have a more interesting rhythm to them imo

the reds pinks and purples record last year was amazing, this doesnt quite reach those heights but it's very pleasant. agree that it feels less idk rangy or loose than woods, the reds pinks purples drum machine pop aesthetic tamps things down a bit.
