C or D: Wolf Eyes

well, it's the most revived thread ever for a reason

anyway, anybody feel the recentish wolf eyes lp on hospital, always wrong. i didn't, but am curious abt others' reactions. way too one-dimensionally shrill and grating for me, with none of the murky, gooey, tarpit throb that used to hold down the shriek & clatter. for some reason, i'm inclined to blame the shift on dominic fernow, as it sounds like a prurient-approved version of the band. honestly tho, i haven't liked much (any?) of the post dillo stuff.

I enjoy the emphasis on Nate's vocals - I like them higher in the mix. It's sort of a different band now, I agree (not a bad thing), but when I saw them a few months ago they were as murky, deranged and fucked up as ever.

yeah, they've remained very satisfying live, though it's been a while since i last saw em. and i love the emphasis on vocals and clearly structured songs, just wish the whole thing were recorded a little differently. total inversion of my reaction to my favorite WE records, which sound amazing and inviting, regardless of how unstructured and supposedly "harsh" the music is.

The show itself was pretty awesome (nice 'n' subdued atmospherics w/harmonica + wah-wah wig out) and he's an exceptionally good interviewee. Swell guy as well.

been totally digging wolf eyes the last couple of days. they sound better than ever to me. the old stuff. sounds more CURRENT to me than it did at the turn of the century. for some reason. really appreciate the old stuff more now than i did at the time.

also w/ ss. been having a reappreciation sesh over the past few weeks, and the early stuff (slicer thru burned mind or thereabouts) still sounds great. especially enjoying the more ambient long-format stuff, live tracks, etc.

yeah, these guys were pretty much one of the best things going until Aaron Dilloway left. Human Animal was the last thing he worked on and it's a total decline from there imo.

Saw them at Netil House last night...hahahahah they are SO SO SO CAMP live! I'd only ever seen Nate Young solo before and that was a really sombre, dark, slow set. This was him and John Olson wearing cut-off denim jackets and leather camps doing yr archetypal hype-macho stances for an hour. Louder than I thought was possible too. Their new guitarist dude is wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild!

They were supported by Folkazoid (who would have been awesome if I was stoned and seventeen) and Porn (Thurston Moore and Bill Gould from Faith No More doing some kind of improv avant metal shit, was geat, Thurston spent the whole gig looking like he was about to blat every where. Ended with some crucial thrash shit) who were wicked.

Sad to not see a single ironic fist pump all night tho.

regardless, Experiments in Feedback is great, particularly the final track which is 15min long and is a loop of a particularly nasty bit of feedback. Far out!

made me revisit "No Answer: Lower Floors" which didn't connect at the time. appreciating it this time around.

and yeah, last time i saw them (2 years ago?) i didn't know how to take 'em. as mentioned above, it was pretty camp. like cartoon dystopian splatter punk rockin' out. don't know how they were in the glory days, but the previous time i saw them (6 years ago?) they were pretty straight n0ize dude noodlin'.

“My whole life” from their last album caught me recently, great stuff.

Saw these guys for the first time in 20 years last night…what I remember from back then was more of an extreme blown out noise sound, but this time they had more of a non-Jazz Funk Throbbing Gristle vibe but with a louder background, kind of like Second Annual Report as played by 00s freaker basement show dudes. Looks like the tour’s wrapping up in a couple nights but I thought it was a good time.

They were definitely mellower last night then any time I'd seen them in the past (I didn't have to punch my way out of a riot 'natch) but the dubbier/weird vibe has been what the last few releases have been like, at least the ones I've heard

But I thought it was great, it is always great to see them

Funny thing about this gig which I didn't know until last night was that this was the gig that got them signed to Sub Pop, it was with Caroliner and it was in the foyer of some admin building and it was...not great

the last time i saw them someone (maybe in the band?) pulled the fire alarm and they just kept playing lmfao
