there are definitely a lot of people who are on the "he's not bad, Best I Ever Had is a great pop song" tip, but i think we're talking about hardcore acolytes who think he's A Big Deal For Good Reason
― Truollmas (some dude), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)
I think Drake' kind of a big deal (no Clipse) but not necessarily for the reason that he's a stud rapper.
― rennavate, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:35 (sixteen years ago)
well yeah, i'm talking about people that don't have to stifle a laugh at lines like ALL HAIL MR. LYRICAL
― Truollmas (some dude), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)
listening to the leaked joint with jay... dude just has a really unlistenable voice -- shit is so whiny
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2010 04:22 (sixteen years ago)
he basically is Yung Berg's vocal doppelganger imo
― Truollmas (some dude), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 10:20 (sixteen years ago)
So, thoughts on the album? I've twittered a bunch of mine already, but haven't heard most of you guys'.
― rennavate, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 23:30 (sixteen years ago)
so horrible
― cutty, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 23:46 (sixteen years ago)
hes a shitty rapper. end of story
― its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)
forget rapping. he has no talent whatsoever.
― cutty, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)
can't think of a single reason why i'd take the time to listen to it
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)
Because you are a Pop Music Critic, and Drake is an Important Pop Music Artist, you are supposed to Listen To Popular Artists, in order to Have Informed Opinions On Important Albums In The Pop Music Landscape?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
^^ this is why i listened to it last night
didn't even make it to "find your love" which i actually like
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
there are so many horrible lines on this album
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:55 (sixteen years ago)
so many
obv everyone is talking about the "i planted a money tree/ which is ironic/ because my mom was a florist" line
That's the first I've heard of it. Hopefully the last, also.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:21 (sixteen years ago)
where's the irony
― cutty, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)
i think all music critics shouldn't feel obligated to listen to music by ex cast members of degrassi, you guys are off the hook
― m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
there isn't any xp
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
well idk if you fancy yourself a pop music critic you should prob listen to this album once
it's going to sell a lot of records is the saddest part
― cutty, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)
xp i dunno, like it's not like I've bothered to listen to Rebirth or the B.o.B. album
― what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)
i trust you're all blocking out time in preparation to listen to full-lengths by the likes of jay sean/iyaz/derulo/katy perry/ke$ha/miley cyrus too
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)
rebirth is a bit different
i didn't listen to bob either but this is gonna sell 3x that

this isn't the same thing because, aside from your random teenpopper, no one is rating jay sean/iyaz/derulo/katy perry/katy perry/ke$ha/miley cyrus albums -- drake's album is going to be very acclaimed, and he's seen as a serious & good artist by A LOT of people
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:34 (sixteen years ago)
i've actively avoided rebirth (and the eminem album that arrived on the same day, talk about a double whammy of unpleasantness). i can barely bring myself to care about b.o.b.'s singles let alone the album.
also it's pretty easy to form an opinion based on a few singles, and i don't think that's ill-informed. i never did hear the whole la roux album! because i value my hearing.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)
i've seen more critics rate perry and ke$ha than drake!! where is this A LOT of people - not one critic or rap/r&b-leaning fan i know gives a fuck about the dude. seriously, because i;d love to hear what a cogent defence of drake might actually be.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
Why does everyone hate B.o.B.? Is it because his big single sounds like The Love Below rerecorded as something easily marketable?
― drop it like it's hot, Elena (HI DERE), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)
i despise 'the love below' but that's slander
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)
i don't think i hate him, it's just boring and has a horrible, badly-sung hook

"bet i bust" is good
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:40 (sixteen years ago)
haven't some ppl in the poptimists sector of music crit rated the Ke$ha record?
― ksh, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
eh, I mostly ignored "Nothing On You" until I happened to catch the video, which I thought was really sweet and naively charming, so now whenever I hear the song I think of stop-motion animation of cute girls acting cute
Given that I'm the only person on ILX who still like The Love Below and Lupe Fiasco, it shouldn't really be a big shocker that I enjoy this song too
― drop it like it's hot, Elena (HI DERE), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:43 (sixteen years ago)
"Bet I Bust" is good, but sounds like it's the only rappin-ass rap song on the album and he isn't even that good on it. T.I. makes that joint.
I hate B.o.B cause both his hits sound like Vanessa Carlton.

I like The Love Below and Lupe Fiasco and "Nothin' on You" has nothing to do with the former and only sounds like the least interesting stuff by the latter.
― what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:46 (sixteen years ago)
ke$ha's album has a 58 on metacritic -- i can guarantee you that drake's rating will be 25+ points higher than that
― gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

Listen to his little call-out bits in the pre-chorus; there are strong shades of Andre 3000 there, particularly on tracks like "Roses".

I mean, BoB is an obvious Andre 3000-wannabe, but drawing any more specific lines between "Nothin' on You" and The Love Below is tenuous at best and I don't hear what you're talking about at all.
― what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)
also while i actively try to hear at least singles that are charting or artists who seem to be gaining some pop culture traction, i definitely don't take critical reception as a gauge of whether i should be listening to something or not. quite the opposite in fact. most critics' taste sucks.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:54 (sixteen years ago)
if we assign each a dummy variable, "nothin on you" is "terrible" and the love below is "not terrible"

better yet with this shit is he drops "isn't it ironic that the girl i wanna marry is a wedding planner" the track right before
― r|t|c, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
xp ha even as a love below defender, a lot of it is terrible, but the difference is it's never terrible because it's bland m.o.r. soft rock
