someone told me that some deejay on wfmu used to play the same sample on their show, but i don't know who used it first.
That would be Chris T. of Aerial View and Communication Breakdown: http://www.wfmu.org/Playlists/AV/chris_archives.shtmlhttp://www.wfmu.org/playlists/co

I can't believe I missed the mention of the Ufomammut - Eve. I could have had CD in hand weeks ago! Just saw the review this weekend in Decibel. Checked it out - Boris and Kyuss have a lovechild in space, a 45 minute epic doom track named after the first woman (not Michelle Obama). Pink Floyd and Hawkwind are the proud grandparents. Nice! I'll order from All That Is Heavy. Also read that Torche scaled down their album to an EP for fall release, with supposedly full album in 2011.

to whoever it was that asked for metal to be added to the nominations list for the 2005-09 poll, I just posted some ILM Top 100 2005-2009: NOMINATIONS THREAD (Ends at midnight GMT on May 31st, 2010)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:14 (sixteen years ago)
Lets all vote and get some stuff in the poll
It's a cracker Fastnbulbous. I'm currently trying to arrange a London gig for them.
― Duran (Doran), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 11:18 (sixteen years ago)
Wow, shit got super weird.
becky might want to check out fugazi.
I love Fugazi - I always liked all the Dischord stuff (and lots of hardcore) in high school & college but I just never really had a metal phase - hence seeking recommendations from you people when I found out I like a lot more of it than I realized. As for i don't remember the last time i asked for help with anything because i've always been a do-my-own-research sort of music listener I can totally appreciate that, but I figure threads like this can kind of be a live RIYL from real experts who know their stuff, and that's one of the things that's amazing about ILM as far as I can tell (as long as it doesn't piss people off by derailing active conversations, and I apologize again if I did that).
Either way, thanks a ton for the recommendations - I've already picked up a bunch of stuff... I love the Coffinworm so far. The High on Fire sounds cool. The Harvey Milk sounds good but maybe a little slow for my tastes? At least the first couple of tracks (on what I think is the newest album) seem a bit TOO bleak, as some of you've said. In the meantime someone else gave me "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" by Dimmu Borger and I like it, though it seems worlds away from something like Black Breath - all the synthesizers and Carmina Burana-ty of it all are a bit silly. But it's kind of cool.
Duran and Jon Lewis have given me a shitload of stuff to sift through (thanks a lot), so for now I'm going to vamoose and get woodshedding on my metal listenin'. Thanks again...
― Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:39 (sixteen years ago)
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is actually kinda stripped-down and primitive, as Dimmu Borgir goes...they peaked on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon, when they brought in actual orchestras and choirs, ending up with something like what might happen if John Williams started a black metal band. So if you like EDT, check those out - and if you find yourself convulsed with laughter, well, me too.

finally found the new Decibel -- thanks Newbury Comics! -- and picked up the new Melvins rekkid too
― ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
so: Wold? all i know about them is what i've dug up in the past few minutes of web searching, but Stosuy, over on Twitter, says: "This weekend I confirmed WOLD's first ever live show/public ritual. 8/15. NYC. More info to come."
anyone like them? if so, could you recommend one of their records to start with?
― ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)
Bloody Panda just called. They are on the way over to shower before commencing on their first west coast tour. Looking forward to finally meeting/seeing these folks :)

WOLD is polarizing to say the least. Screech Owl is their best one, I love the lyrics and the mood it creates, it totally evokes the brutal winters out here. Their latest one Working Together For Our Privacy takes the noise gimmick so far that I wonder if it's a total piss-take.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
I listened to samples of Screech Owl on eMusic a few months ago after talk of them on here and I was like, 'no'. I need more peaks, valleys, crags and cliffs in my music; it just sounded like a soup.

Perfect. I'm sold. Thanks, Adrien!

Herman, I'll get back to you about what I've been listening to -- just gotta go through my iTunes and come up w/ a list.
― ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 19:24 (sixteen years ago)
i can't stop listening to high tide today. sea shanties being one of my fave albums ever. people new to metal should start here in 1969.

xpost - I will join you Scott. That's a great album that I don't spin nearly often enough!
LOVE that album! i listened to it the other day, in fact.

was tempted to pickup a reissue of that high tide lp blind because of its rep + the badass cover. guess I should have.
also, people new to metal coming from the baroness/mastodon angle would do well to check out the new cathedral - the guessing game. got it spinning right now and it still rules. also strikes me as v. approachable despite its length.
― original bgm, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:43 (sixteen years ago)
Wow, why does crazy stuff always go down when I'm away for a few days?
Anyway, Becky, off the top of my head I would recommend checking out Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence, Nachtmystium - Black Meddle (both parts 1 and 2), and Jucifer - Throned in Blood. Anyway, I'm going to go back to listening to April Wine.

Alan: bought the Cathedral and never really listened to it, but i'm looking forward to it more now
― ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:50 (sixteen years ago)
For god's sake, ksh, throw that shit on. You'll know what kind of presence you're in almost immediately.
― it takes a lot to laugh, it takes a crane shot to 'NOOOOOO' (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:51 (sixteen years ago)
ok duder, it will be the next thing i listen to tonight
― ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
Is the kind of presence supposed to be "greatness?" Is that where you were going with that?
― X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:58 (sixteen years ago)
yes indeed.
― it takes a lot to laugh, it takes a crane shot to 'NOOOOOO' (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 20:59 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, I've been spinning it pretty consistently. so good.
also love the gatefold pic of them hangin and scoping out vinyl.
― original bgm, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)
and for those who are unfamiliar, I recommended it because its coming just as much from a psych/prog angle as a metal one. if not more so.
― original bgm, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:05 (sixteen years ago)
one final thing - not sure if these guys have tackled the topic before (I really only know their first two albums) but the animal rights lyrics on "Requiem For The Voiceless" really struck a chord.
― original bgm, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:14 (sixteen years ago)
alright, I lied. "the running man" is better than "21st century schizoid man".

hell, i gotta dig it out now. whenever i hear the words "the running man" it makes me want to hear that album. does LJ have that tear garden album? totally his kinda thing. i think. based on anecdotal ilm evidence.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:23 (sixteen years ago)
um, album would be: Last Man To Fly
(if anyone's interested)
― scott seward, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)
one of these days i will listen to some new metal, i promise!
― scott seward, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
listening to and enjoying Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1, b/c their new record is being released next week and i want to. the dude shouting "in the terror twilight" at the end, though, makes me keep thinking of the Pavement album of that same name which, incidentally, I've never heard
― ksh, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 03:23 (sixteen years ago)
he's probably never heard it either -- he just discovered interpol and joy division!as previously mentioned, i'm eagerly anticipating their new one. at its worst it could sound like sisters of mercy, which isn't all that bad once in a while.

hey metalheads have any thoughts on Locrian? liking their new one, Territories, but not sure if it fits this thread or not
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 3 June 2010 13:47 (sixteen years ago)
i like that locrian album. i reviewed it last year for my noize column when it was vinyl-only.
― scott seward, Thursday, 3 June 2010 13:55 (sixteen years ago)
i saw locrian perform a few months ago and it was kind of dull and grueling, but i suspect i was just feeling impatient (they opened for ludicra and there was another opening band after them and that band was pretty terrible) and also because i was hungry. i liked what i heard, though, and would probably prefer to hear it in the privacy of my living room while i was reading or doing something else.

I went to see Entombed, Woe of Tyrants and Gwynnbleidd last night. It was good.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:23 (sixteen years ago)
New Soilwork record is pretty strong on first listen. I've always loved this band, but it feels like they were treading water on the last few releases. Nothing significantly different sonically this time around, except for the return of their good guitarist, but it sounds like they've returned to a little more technical and brutal sound this time around. Lots of arpeggios, less chugging. nothing ridiculously catchy yet, but I'm only on the third track.
― X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
Oh, here we go. "Deliverance Is Mine" fits the catchiness bill nicely.

hey quick ? for metal dudez:
what are good metal labels these days? like i looked at roadrunner and they seem pretty wack now, though they did sign steve miller, good first step IMO
(also this is cuz i'm doing a podcast and wanted to do some metal for bumper tunes, so like either reeeaaally extreme gore/grind/black or arty sunnO)) drone stuff is probably out)...
like, um, stuff like mastodon that is cool w/metal dudes but has some larger appeal would be perfect, i can't get TOO abrasive on this stuff
or like power stuff that's more a throwback to the old dio/maiden style melodic stuff would be perfect too

^ cool w/ some metal dudes, at least
― ksh, Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
For your traditional power/thrash/death stuff, Nuclear Blast has most of the best acts signed at this point. For your more artsy/hip/pitchfork-friendly stuff, you can't really go wrong with Relapse or Profound Lore.
― X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)
Century Media and Metal Blade have some great stuff, but they're both currently undergoing a bit of an identity crisis, so there's no real consistency and there's a lot of crap. E1 has a lot of the bigger acts like High on Fire, but they don't really have any sort of signing philosophy other than the stuff they think will sell. You might want to check out Prophecy, though -- they have a lot of the "prettier" ambient black metal acts and stuff with lots of cred.
