Fair enough. No worries.
ksh got hazed because of his previous posting history though, same with LJ and ilxor. But it's not right to do it on somebody's more or less first post on this thread who doesn't have a certain kind of online backstory. And that applies to all sexes. I do not see what the problem is with being polite sometimes.

ksh got hazed because of his previous posting history though

what?

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

when i started posting as kshighway, no one had any idea that i had even posted here before, because i had only posted for a handful of months in 2007 under a different name, and no one paid much attention to me

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

you had been posting on ilm a while before posting on this thread, right? you were seen as being "pitchfork indie" iirc

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

for sure -- but i was never hazed on Rolling Metal, just everywhere else

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

haha

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

:-)

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

plus everyone thought you were dom or something? i forget.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

i don't follow the great sock wars that closely.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

I couldn't tell you who anyones sockpuppets are tbh

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

btw if anyone wants recommendations for good metal (IMO) then they could do a lot worse than checking out http://www.profoundlorerecords.com/

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

plus everyone thought you were dom or something? i forget.

― scott seward, Sunday, May 30, 2010 12:04 PM

hahaha -- if they did, i wasn't aware of it

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

tons of ppl thought i was someone's sock though

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

I think most new posters seem to get that accusation.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

ksh what are your favourite discoveries since you started posting on rolling metal?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

i don't listen to torche, mastodon, or baroness, but its possible i might like a band called coffinworm. they don't feature, like, ex-members of superchunk or anything, do they?

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

no

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

Coffinworm

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

I think you would enjoy Hooded Menace too

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

blackened sludge doom. you could describe my lungs the very same way.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

i think i can download all this stuff from my e-mail, but i never do. cuz i'm lazy. and hate listening to music on my computer. but i should check some of the newer profound lore stuff. i dig them.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

Your lungs will like Sloath on Riot Season.

Duran (Doran), Sunday, 30 May 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

have I already stanned for Shadow Kingdom records enough? because they are just killing it dead with obscure reissues. amazing shit. on the sludgy front tho ss try to get that hyponic thing I was talking about, it's remarkable.

Scott you do too listen to Baroness. You posted abt it. It's OK!

Still lolling about Ben Sidran, A+ to the man in the aerosmith T.

we live on bagels we are Wburg FC (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the ben sidran post was choice but i didn't want to pile on.

i listened to the last baroness album once and i liked it! listened to the one before it once too and liked it okay too. so, yes, i have listened to baroness. but i don't "listen" to baroness.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

but i've got no problem with baroness. i like kylesa more though. or i really like one album by kylesa a bunch anyway. enough to listen to it, like, six times.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

and as far as mastodon goes:

remission - listened to it twice for review purposes and even bought the vinyl cuz it looked cool. later sold vinyl on ebay without ever listening to vinyl. gave it a rave review in the village voice based on those two listens.

leviathan - don't think i ever listened to it.

blood mountain - bought the cd and listened to it once. sold cd.

crack the skye - listened to some of the tracks on youtube.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

but i got no problem with them either. more power to them. in theory i should love them. just don't ever want to hear them. the heart wants what the heart wants.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

leviathan is actually the best one in my opinion

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

I enjoy them when i put them on but then i get a feeling like damn this is time i could be listening to rush.

99 anna hay-uff jussa woan' do (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

my fave mastodon moment is actually the sample at the beginning of shadows that move. had it on a relapse comp and i would play it over and over. just the sample and the first minute or so of the song. one of the all-time great movie sample intros. someone told me that some deejay on wfmu used to play the same sample on their show, but i don't know who used it first.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

what movie is that from?

99 anna hay-uff jussa woan' do (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

one flew over the cuckoos nest. according to wikipedia. i haven't seen the movie in years. don't remember that outburst.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah its been like 20 yrs for me. It is on Watch Instantly at the moment...

99 anna hay-uff jussa woan' do (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

Actually that comp and Leviathan are my favourites with the latter easily being in my top ten metal albums of the last decade. That comp is great though 'Slickleg' and 'Battle At Sea'.

Duran (Doran), Sunday, 30 May 2010 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

have I already stanned for Shadow Kingdom records enough? because they are just killing it dead with obscure reissues. amazing shit.

HEAR HEAR. great label & distro. i think i tried to get people on an earlier version of this thread to check out The Hand Of Doom reissue unsuccessfully.

"what's nate's thing called again? would like to visit PNW."

Dear LL, please do come. I'm doing a mini-fest July 9-10 called Day of Hel, but my main annual festival in Portland is called Fall into Darkness and will occur this year on Columbus Day Weekend Oct 7-10.

Portland is an awesome place to visit. Just ask EZSnappin. We been hangin all weekend. :)

Nate Carson, Sunday, 30 May 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

And for the record, I haven't been posting on ILX for that long, and never really experienced any sort of hazing that I recall. Folks have been quite nice.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 30 May 2010 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

Ooh! I'll look into it. Thanks!

whoa, what a weird discussion I missed over the last few days...

original bgm, Monday, 31 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

someone told me that some deejay on wfmu used to play the same sample on their show, but i don't know who used it first.

That would be Chris T. of Aerial View and Communication Breakdown:

Brakhage, Monday, 31 May 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

I can't believe I missed the mention of the Ufomammut - Eve. I could have had CD in hand weeks ago! Just saw the review this weekend in Decibel. Checked it out - Boris and Kyuss have a lovechild in space, a 45 minute epic doom track named after the first woman (not Michelle Obama). Pink Floyd and Hawkwind are the proud grandparents. Nice! I'll order from All That Is Heavy. Also read that Torche scaled down their album to an EP for fall release, with supposedly full album in 2011.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 31 May 2010 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

to whoever it was that asked for metal to be added to the nominations list for the 2005-09 poll, I just posted some ILM Top 100 2005-2009: NOMINATIONS THREAD (Ends at midnight GMT on May 31st, 2010)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

Lets all vote and get some stuff in the poll

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 31 May 2010 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

It's a cracker Fastnbulbous. I'm currently trying to arrange a London gig for them.

Duran (Doran), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, shit got super weird.

becky might want to check out fugazi.

I love Fugazi - I always liked all the Dischord stuff (and lots of hardcore) in high school & college but I just never really had a metal phase - hence seeking recommendations from you people when I found out I like a lot more of it than I realized. As for i don't remember the last time i asked for help with anything because i've always been a do-my-own-research sort of music listener I can totally appreciate that, but I figure threads like this can kind of be a live RIYL from real experts who know their stuff, and that's one of the things that's amazing about ILM as far as I can tell (as long as it doesn't piss people off by derailing active conversations, and I apologize again if I did that).

Either way, thanks a ton for the recommendations - I've already picked up a bunch of stuff... I love the Coffinworm so far. The High on Fire sounds cool. The Harvey Milk sounds good but maybe a little slow for my tastes? At least the first couple of tracks (on what I think is the newest album) seem a bit TOO bleak, as some of you've said. In the meantime someone else gave me "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" by Dimmu Borger and I like it, though it seems worlds away from something like Black Breath - all the synthesizers and Carmina Burana-ty of it all are a bit silly. But it's kind of cool.

Duran and Jon Lewis have given me a shitload of stuff to sift through (thanks a lot), so for now I'm going to vamoose and get woodshedding on my metal listenin'. Thanks again...

Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:39 (sixteen years ago)

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is actually kinda stripped-down and primitive, as Dimmu Borgir goes...they peaked on Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon, when they brought in actual orchestras and choirs, ending up with something like what might happen if John Williams started a black metal band. So if you like EDT, check those out - and if you find yourself convulsed with laughter, well, me too.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

finally found the new Decibel -- thanks Newbury Comics! -- and picked up the new Melvins rekkid too

ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

so: Wold? all i know about them is what i've dug up in the past few minutes of web searching, but Stosuy, over on Twitter, says: "This weekend I confirmed WOLD's first ever live show/public ritual. 8/15. NYC. More info to come."

anyone like them? if so, could you recommend one of their records to start with?

ksh, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

Bloody Panda just called. They are on the way over to shower before commencing on their first west coast tour. Looking forward to finally meeting/seeing these folks :)
