"Guys, I'm new to jazz, what should I hear?"
"Oh man, go cop some Ben Sidran without delay"

They're good recommendations if we're talking first two Mastodon albums and recent(ish) brilliant but accessible fare. 'Snakes For The Divine' by High On Fire, 'Eater Of Birds' by Cobalt, 'Eve' by UFOmammut, Hey Colossus And The Van Halen Time Capsule, Cathedral 'Guessing Game', Sloath, the last Napalm Death and in the slightly more careworn department Exodus and Slayer's last albums are pretty good, plenty here will rep for Megadeth's last album. Coffinworm are awesome. If you like that really bleak shit check out Buster by Admiral Angry, Things Viral by Khanate, All The Dread Perversity... by Gnaw Their Tongues and Greymachines. And for more 'esoteric' drone-y stuff, Monoliths And Dimensions by SunnO))) probably comes recommended by most people here and there's always Solar Anus, Blood Of The Black Owl, Dillinger, Rolo Tomassi, Shining, Altaar, Wardruna, Arabrot, Overmars, Zu, Gnod, White Hills, Meshuggah, Municipal Waste, Oneida (yeah, yeah, I know...) And no-one's life can truly be considered complete without ownership of at least one Electric Wizard album. And there should be another one this year.

I genuinely feel jealous of someone getting into metal now. It's pretty fucking amazing. I keep on hoping that something that I find impenetrable like free jazz or country music will become clear to me. Getting into a new genre of music is a fucking blast.

Duran (Doran), Sunday, 30 May 2010 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

hey smithy, the newcomer said what she liked and asked for new/recent stuff in a similar vein, I know you were joking, but that could be misinterpretated by someone who doesn't know you, as being hostile and could put her off participating in this thread and then subsequently missing out in the "more awesome" stuff you prefer.
Everyone has to start somewhere in a genre then they can dig deeper into other sub-genres and the canon.
I don't know what got you into metal, but you can bet somewhere there was someone who thought it was the wrong thing to get into

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

Also great to see Solar Anus mentioned here.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

Hermann our new friend said she had, and liked, records by Torche, Mastodon, and Baroness. You & ksh told her that if she enjoyed those, she might get other albums by Torche, Mastodon, and Baroness. I get to give you shit about that. Sorry but those are the rules.

Yes I know you then followed up with other stuff but anybody who doesn't lol at "I have albums by Torche, Mastodon, and Baroness, like 'em, what do the experts here recommend?" "Try the other albums by the same bands!" is dead inside imo

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

When I come across a band I like I then like to hear everything by them.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

Hermann tell me three bands you like & ask me for a recommendation and then tell me you can't actually see what's hilarious about the response you get

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

and I did suggest Harvey Milk first. My Torche and Baroness suggestions were because ksh suggested the others but left out the better releases by the bands!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I'm standing by my "lol @ that" because it made me lol

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

you know what? I haven't seen you suggest anything to Becky yet.
I really hope the metal thread isn't going to degenerate into a rolling hip-hop type "club".

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

I suggest to Becky that if she likes music, she has probably already sussed out that she might like other albums by the bands she already likes

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

and if you yourself don't have a self-knowing chuckle at yourself about that instead of a RAGE AT MEAN OLD AEROSMITH then I feel bad for you dude

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

just woke up, but that is kind of funny now that you point it out, good sir -- ah well! recommendations stand

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

"so I've just looked up Coffinworm and the band that supposedly sounds like Fugazi mentioned above on there and they have both - I'm checking them out right now."

becky might want to check out fugazi.

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

never thought I'd be telling somebody "see now that ksh has his wits about him" but well here we are

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

also -- i'm still in the relative metal n00b, figuring-things-out and asking questions mode myself, so i don't have too many albums to choose from when giving recommendations to ppl

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

low blow aerosmith, low blow :-)

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

FWIW my recommendation for people who like the stuff Mastodon and Baroness have been doing the last couple of years is Machine Head by Deep Purple

*sigh*

this threads really turning shit today

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

the "no I did a better job helping becky" discussion was making me sick -- sorry
but carry on if you must

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

actually the thread's really interesting Hermann, & fun, sorry it doesn't have more polls and that people are actually engaging in spirited disagreement instead of just going "all this stuff is nice, it's all nice"

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

La Lechera though I gotta assume you have been at a metal show and felt the entire atmosphere list in one direction when a woman enters the room, this is hardly a new phenomenon

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

A-grade ILX thread descending into a morass of meta bullshit shocker

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess so -- I don't notice it much happening to me (a woman) but I guess it happens. I just don't really enjoy when that dynamic shows up in an environment where we're just black/white text. I just think it's lame.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

anyway, please let's continue talking about more interesting things

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

sorry La L if I'm culpable in this I was mainly just trying to lol at the Trinity Of Neo-Boogie recommendations

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

None of this is because it was a "girl" who asked. This is complete bullshit and completely unworthy of every single one of you.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

can we stop?

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

once they retract the bullshit this is because its a girl asked crap

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

Herman, you are an A+ dude, this "argument" is totally not worth your or anyone else's time

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

you know what you might do instead of getting all indignant for once is ask why you came off that way to La Lechera

just a thought, "is that how I seemed to you? fuck, don't wanna come off that way" infinitely better approach than "no way, I don't feel like that so if it looked like that to you you're wrong"

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

thanks and hope I haven't derailed things too much.

apropos of nothing except that I saw it, 4 months ago somebody linked to Phil's very slightly editorialized announcement of the Soundgarden reunion & the comments on the piece bring quality lol per minute

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

do i seriously have to explain this?

phil black hole sonned in msn beef

scott seward, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

hey La L actually I would be appreciative if you did - I would like to know if I came off creepy to you & I can stand it if I did, it would be useful for me to know

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

man, skimming through those comments makes me wish we had comments on ILX

ksh, Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

if you're forcing me to answer this question (skip to * if you don't want to read about this) guess it was the chivalry, the possible (maybe perceived on my part) dick waving about who can help becky best. who can truly give becky what she needs? who can give her the proper recommendations? it just seemed ridiculous. i've seen this happen irl and while it never really happens to me (i don't remember the last time i asked for help with anything because i've always been a do-my-own-research sort of music listener) it happens. and it really doesn't happen the same way when a guy is asking for recommendations. that's all.

no hard feelings btw -- i just want everyone to continue talking about metal.

* in fact, i would like to talk about festivals. if i can't make it to roadburn (too $$ to get to europe any time soon) and i don't want to metal cruise (no seasickness pls also cozumel blecch) what are some of my other options? what's nate's thing called again? would like to visit PNW.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

note: you could always sb me if you feel that strongly

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

and it really doesn't happen the same way when a guy is asking for recommendations. that's all.

Bullshit. Not on these rolling metal threads that I've been posting on for years and certainly none that involve me. I think you will find most of us are more than happy to offer recommendations , and have done so many many times. Quite a few people have even thanked me for introducing them to bands/albums. And most of my posts were actually arguing with smithy over the actual bands recommended, not about the actual poster apart from the mention that newbies will be put off by such attitudes.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

man, skimming through those comments makes me wish we had comments on ILX

we do, it's the "submit post" button

in re: festivals, I don't know, I would have gone to MDF if I didn't have to leave town for work, but pick through these:

henceforth we eat truffle fries (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 30 May 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Speaking as a UK poster, it's not unusual for women to be into metal. I mean some gigs I go to are nearly 50/50. Half the metalheads I know are women. Jumping to the worst possible conclusion out of myriad possibilities is a bit shitty. I've had exactly the same conversation with plenty of male people on this board. Acoleuthic being one...

"Who can give her what she needs?" That's a bit fucking low.

not about the actual poster apart from the mention that newbies will be put off by such attitudes, in my opinion.

ksh had the living fuck hazed out of him when he first got to this board & he's doing just fine as far as I can tell
