I guess so... I have eMusic credits to spend, so I've just looked up Coffinworm and the band that supposedly sounds like Fugazi mentioned above on there and they have both - I'm checking them out right now.

I would say the new Harvey Milk album then, but beware, it's very very bleak, but it might well be the best album they have done.

Might want to check out Baroness's first record, Red Album, too!

Mastodon's Crack the Skye, which came out last year, is also quite excellent

Don't waste your time with Harvey Milk. They're like a more boring Melvins. Definitely look into Baroness's Red Album, though.

Becky, on eMusic, check out Slough Feg, Agalloch, Madder Mortem, and Opeth off the top of my head. Listen to the samples first and follow your nose. eMusic is a GREAT place to DL metal legitimately.

and the 2 Baroness eps (now on 1cd) which are even better than the albums.

I'll have to check that out, too. (Just bought Dimensional Breakthrough two hours or so ago, though, so that's on deck.)

I pre-ordered that a few months back on vinyl and it's supposedly shipped so hopefully it will be here next week.

Seriously, of all the bands praised on this thread, they are the one that provokes the most serious you-must-be-joking response from me. I do not get it.

Sidenote, those of you who dig the dark-folk/evil-ambient kind o' metalz should srsly try to hear the croaking, chanting, droning film score by Christian Henson for the new medieval adventure movie The Black Death. It's on Movie Score Media records. Great, palpable shit.

I'll concede that the melvins are probably the better band, tho. harvey milk are like a more raw (sometimes sloppy) take on the formula. I can get with that.

Sure, Melvins are inarguably better. And I haven't really spun any Harvey Milk albums. But I did host them live a few years back, and they put on a positively titanic headlining set.

I have heard that they are inconsistent, so perhaps if you've seen them live, it was an off night. But the show I was made me a believer.

BTW, a second trailer for the Fall Into Darkness 2009 DVD is now online. These are going to sell out fast.

no the coven is busy contemplating appropriate repercussions for mistreatment of newcomers by its members, to wit, somebody unfamiliar with the genre asked for recommendations and the coven came w/TORCHE, MASTODON, AND BARONESS right out of the gate

They're good recommendations if we're talking first two Mastodon albums and recent(ish) brilliant but accessible fare. 'Snakes For The Divine' by High On Fire, 'Eater Of Birds' by Cobalt, 'Eve' by UFOmammut, Hey Colossus And The Van Halen Time Capsule, Cathedral 'Guessing Game', Sloath, the last Napalm Death and in the slightly more careworn department Exodus and Slayer's last albums are pretty good, plenty here will rep for Megadeth's last album. Coffinworm are awesome. If you like that really bleak shit check out Buster by Admiral Angry, Things Viral by Khanate, All The Dread Perversity... by Gnaw Their Tongues and Greymachines. And for more 'esoteric' drone-y stuff, Monoliths And Dimensions by SunnO))) probably comes recommended by most people here and there's always Solar Anus, Blood Of The Black Owl, Dillinger, Rolo Tomassi, Shining, Altaar, Wardruna, Arabrot, Overmars, Zu, Gnod, White Hills, Meshuggah, Municipal Waste, Oneida (yeah, yeah, I know...) And no-one's life can truly be considered complete without ownership of at least one Electric Wizard album. And there should be another one this year.

I genuinely feel jealous of someone getting into metal now. It's pretty fucking amazing. I keep on hoping that something that I find impenetrable like free jazz or country music will become clear to me. Getting into a new genre of music is a fucking blast.

hey smithy, the newcomer said what she liked and asked for new/recent stuff in a similar vein, I know you were joking, but that could be misinterpretated by someone who doesn't know you, as being hostile and could put her off participating in this thread and then subsequently missing out in the "more awesome" stuff you prefer.
Everyone has to start somewhere in a genre then they can dig deeper into other sub-genres and the canon.
I don't know what got you into metal, but you can bet somewhere there was someone who thought it was the wrong thing to get into

never thought I'd be telling somebody "see now that ksh has his wits about him" but well here we are

also -- i'm still in the relative metal n00b, figuring-things-out and asking questions mode myself, so i don't have too many albums to choose from when giving recommendations to ppl
