shakey i was basically with you on this until she went all twitterdouche. now i just wanna say the truffle fries line was gold but don't sleep on the olive bread yo.

Maya’s tirade, typical in the way it moved from the political to the personal and back again, was interrupted by a waiter, who offered her a variety of rolls. She chose the olive bread.

like I don't give a shit if MIA's got a deeply nuanced opinion about the Tamil conflict, or has misrepresented who her dad actuall is/what he does - it's informed her work in an interesting way. Certainly it raised the profile of the conflict way above what it had before in the western media. and it adds another dimension to her work. obfuscation and exploitation of personal details often work this way with artists.

xp

I'm not defending twitterdoucheness btw - it's a dick move. albeit a funny one, and totally in character.

emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

okay what i took away from that interview was less 'mia doesn't care abt poor ppl, eats fancy foods' and more 'mia loves saying the word 'terrorist''

It's probably too late to change the title of this thread to something like MIA (Michaela Grobelny, German techno producer), huh?

Andy K, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

"It's upsetting when babies say ga-ga now. It used to be innocent. Now, they're calling her name."

No yardstick is needed to determine if this statement is moronic.

Maya’s tirade, typical in the way it moved from the political to the personal and back again, was interrupted by a waiter, who offered her a variety of rolls. She declined in an expression of solidarity with opressed Tamils.

oh I dunno, I lol'd. what I take from that is that MIA is really paranoid/competitive with LGG and made a lame joke about it

emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i think the yardstick is more her affinity for contradictory bullshit that borders on straight up lying and the fact that she is firmly of the school of say something that sounds challenging without worrying about what it actually means.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

when has this woman ever played nice? all the Gaga references (lame and otherwise) are just a part of her whole rebel schtick. she's the contrarian's pop star...for better or for worse.

Blancminaj (Spinspin Sugah), Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

i mean also i don't think the problem is as much that she doesn't understand sri lanka as the way she exploits it and her personal connection to it.

but whatever my dislike of maya is on record all over the place so i'm done i think.

Shakey Mo is completely OTM.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

That said I think pieces like Hirschberg's are also awesome. Esp. why they cause pop stars to freak out completely!

emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

Honestly, this article told me a lot more about Diplo than MIA, who I already knew was a shticky loudmouth married to a Bronfman.

I also want to see the "UNEDITED VERSION"!

"My tirade, typical in the way it moved from the political to the personal and back again, was interrupted by a waiter, who offered me a variety of rolls. I chose the olive bread which was delicious. That vicious cunt Lynn chose some baguette thing which she picked at but didn't eat since she subsists on hate alone."

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

Do you like the music of M.I.A.? Do you listen to her lyrics, or do you just like the beat? The Times Magazine examines the politics of the Sri Lankan musician, who has been called a terrorist sympathizer by some. In general, do you pay attention to political messages in music? What musical artists past or present do you think have been particularly deft at getting across political messages?

wait carles blogs for the ny times now?

why does the writer say her fans don’t listen to the lyrics? Has she met them all?
And what does she have against french fries? These are trite comments.
