which still doesn't take away from the fact that giving out the journo's # was a total asshole move
eh probably. at the same time, it is funny.

And wait! Breaking! M.I.A. has tweeted again. This time, she tweeted, "NEWS IS AN OPINION! UNEDITED VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW WILL BE ON neetrecordings THIS MEMORIAL WEEKEND!!!""I have no idea what she's talking about," said Ms. Hirschberg.

total bullshit to give out somebody's phone number in response to getting press you didn't like imo
if you don't want people to write what they think about it, stay out of the music biz imo, I may be mr. whiny baby about politics & stuff but you don't hear me complaining about bad reviews, that's kids' stuff imo

i was going to say, the artists who get lots of overwhelmingly positive press always seem to be the ones that get really sensitive and immature about any bad press, so really kudos to you for being a counterexample dude

i like some mia records but "caring about the poor", really?
whether or not she genuinely "cares about the poor" is beside the point - what I was referring to is that people (such as Hirschberg in this piece) see her spouting crypto-leftist platitudes and see that as being incompatible with her wealth+fame. which, imho, is a poorly thought out, bullshit criticism.

Do you like the music of M.I.A.? Do you listen to her lyrics, or do you just like the beat? The Times Magazine examines the politics of the Sri Lankan musician, who has been called a terrorist sympathizer by some. In general, do you pay attention to political messages in music? What musical artists past or present do you think have been particularly deft at getting across political messages?http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/what-can-you-learn-about-politics-from-pop-songs/

the yardstick being used to measure her moron-ness is her professed politics and grandstanding tho. it's like when people would give Mick Jones shit for Sandinista! by pointing out that he didn't actually CARE about the conflict in Nicaragua, he was too busy snorting coke in NY nightclubs or whatever. which totally misses the point that Sandinista! is a pretty interesting and weird record with lots of great stuff on it, and that it's nods to the politics of the time paint an enduring and informative picture of the musical and political landscape of the 80s.

shakey i was basically with you on this until she went all twitterdouche. now i just wanna say the truffle fries line was gold but don't sleep on the olive bread yo.
Maya’s tirade, typical in the way it moved from the political to the personal and back again, was interrupted by a waiter, who offered her a variety of rolls. She chose the olive bread.

like I don't give a shit if MIA's got a deeply nuanced opinion about the Tamil conflict, or has misrepresented who her dad actuall is/what he does - it's informed her work in an interesting way. Certainly it raised the profile of the conflict way above what it had before in the western media. and it adds another dimension to her work. obfuscation and exploitation of personal details often work this way with artists.

I'm not defending twitterdoucheness btw - it's a dick move. albeit a funny one, and totally in character.
okay what i took away from that interview was less 'mia doesn't care abt poor ppl, eats fancy foods' and more 'mia loves saying the word 'terrorist''

yeah i think the yardstick is more her affinity for contradictory bullshit that borders on straight up lying and the fact that she is firmly of the school of say something that sounds challenging without worrying about what it actually means.

i mean also i don't think the problem is as much that she doesn't understand sri lanka as the way she exploits it and her personal connection to it.
but whatever my dislike of maya is on record all over the place so i'm done i think.
