I'm downloading-- er, I mean "investigating" Diabolus in Musica right now.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 27 May 2010 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, it really is Diabulus, not Diabolus.

Some weeks I feel like bands should just go by their EM id numbers, and forget the whole name thing. But that's probably a more appealing idea if you're 12 than if you're 3540288705.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 27 May 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

Diabulus in Musica sounds promising, there are some cool Dark Tranquillity touches. When they're not going all Epica on us the singer actually reminds me of the singer from Brave, in that she takes a tasteful approach, never too bombastic, never too flitty. Thanks for the tip, smithdude, it's easy to lose track of everything Metal Blade puts out.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

Got a vinyl order in the mail yesterday or the day before and getting around to this - man, Shadow Kingdom records can do no wrong in my book right now. This is an unreleased 1989 album by a band from Kansas who sound like darker late eighties metal - like their inspiration is in stuff like Sad Wings of Destiny, maybe a touch of Mercyful Fate but much slower - just a great vibe & great big crunchy guitar - if you can't get into eighties metal sounds this isn't for you but if you can, wow, this is fantastic.

God this album kicks all kinds of ass

Very much wanting an enumeration of all the kinds of kickable ass.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 28 May 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

smithy doesnt do polls!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

Re the drumming on this Diabulus in Musica album: they list a drummer, but it sure sounds to me like a drum-machine throughout. I actually don't have any problem with that. For new bands, particularly, I think it can be helpful to not have to feel like you're trying to innovate on every instrument at once. Having a solid, basic frame on which the other players can build seems to me to be working in their favor here.

xpost: I was only joking about enumerating ass, but the elders among us will remember that it's possible to make lists of things that nobody votes on...

ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Is that the Exodus issue or is there a newer one?

Nate Carson, Friday, 28 May 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Decibel site showing new July 2010 issue w/ Watain on cover

ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

Watain is everywhere then.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

Is Terrorizer any good? It's really expensive -- like $9+ -- in the US.

ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

I wish they would drop the promo CD and go back to charging $6.66. But it's definitely the most comparable in quality to Decibel.

Nate Carson, Friday, 28 May 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

Oh wow, didn't know they made that move. Yeah, I'd rather not pay an extra $2+ for a CD. But I'll at least peek at it on the newsstand.

ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

because of the current economic climate they're having to cover some more of the bigger knuckledragging acts but its still a good mag. Its hardcore readers hate the deathcore coverage but they say they have no choice.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

but they dont seem to cover the extreme but not metal end spectrum like they used to. You wont see Diamanda Galas on the cover now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

Only hipsters read decibel.

BLOODY BOLLOCKS HELL! (aldo), Saturday, 29 May 2010 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sorry to do this, but I always find these threads so overwhelming and I don't know where to start. I don't know much about metal but I'm guessing I tend to like the so-called "hipster" stuff. If I have been given, and really like, the following albums, what are 3 more I should buy to try out?: Torche - "Meanderthal" // Black Breath - "Heavy Breathing" // Baroness - "Blue Record"... thanks and hope I haven't derailed things too much.

Becky Facelift, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

You looking more for new/current releases?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

I guess so... I have eMusic credits to spend, so I've just looked up Coffinworm and the band that supposedly sounds like Fugazi mentioned above on there and they have both - I'm checking them out right now.

Becky Facelift, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

I would say the new Harvey Milk album then, but beware, it's very very bleak, but it might well be the best album they have done.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

Might want to check out Baroness's first record, Red Album, too!

Mastodon's Crack the Skye, which came out last year, is also quite excellent

ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

And Torche - Torche

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

Don't waste your time with Harvey Milk. They're like a more boring Melvins. Definitely look into Baroness's Red Album, though.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

Becky, on eMusic, check out Slough Feg, Agalloch, Madder Mortem, and Opeth off the top of my head. Listen to the samples first and follow your nose. eMusic is a GREAT place to DL metal legitimately.

we live on bagels we are Wburg FC (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

and the 2 Baroness eps (now on 1cd) which are even better than the albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

I'll have to check that out, too. (Just bought Dimensional Breakthrough two hours or so ago, though, so that's on deck.)

ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

I pre-ordered that a few months back on vinyl and it's supposedly shipped so hopefully it will be here next week.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

Don't waste your time with Harvey Milk. They're like a more boring Melvins.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO

CUSE EX MACHINA (jjjusten), Saturday, 29 May 2010 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously, of all the bands praised on this thread, they are the one that provokes the most serious you-must-be-joking response from me. I do not get it.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Saturday, 29 May 2010 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

Sidenote, those of you who dig the dark-folk/evil-ambient kind o' metalz should srsly try to hear the croaking, chanting, droning film score by Christian Henson for the new medieval adventure movie The Black Death. It's on Movie Score Media records. Great, palpable shit.

we live on bagels we are Wburg FC (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 29 May 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

you heard special wishes? the little mini-suite (that it closes with is masterful, imo.

original bgm, Saturday, 29 May 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'll concede that the melvins are probably the better band, tho. harvey milk are like a more raw (sometimes sloppy) take on the formula. I can get with that.

original bgm, Saturday, 29 May 2010 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

Sure, Melvins are inarguably better. And I haven't really spun any Harvey Milk albums. But I did host them live a few years back, and they put on a positively titanic headlining set.

I have heard that they are inconsistent, so perhaps if you've seen them live, it was an off night. But the show I was made me a believer.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 29 May 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

BTW, a second trailer for the Fall Into Darkness 2009 DVD is now online. These are going to sell out fast.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 29 May 2010 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

What's the best Melvins record? I own zero, although I'm interested in maybe picking up the one that's coming out this Tuesday.

ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

Depends who you ask and I'm sure there are many threads about it...

Old school ultimate: Bullhead
One track monster: Lysol (aka Melvins s/t)
Cobain-approved: Houdini
The quiet album: The Bootlicker
Latest greatest: A Senile Animal

Nate Carson, Saturday, 29 May 2010 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks, Nate! I think I'll look into Bullhead. Excited.

ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

That's where I'd start. :) Enjoy!

Nate Carson, Saturday, 29 May 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

Houdini will always be my fave as it was my entry point but you cant beat Bullhead

i am kicked out of the coven now aren't i

CUSE EX MACHINA (jjjusten), Sunday, 30 May 2010 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

As much as I like the new Harvey Milk, the new Melvins is even better. What a fun album.
