also looking forward to reading this -- http://bit.ly/bp47og -- soon, which is, in part, about black metal

whoa, attention glenn m., I'm listening to the new one by diabulus in musica - secrets - it's power metal in the Nightwish/Epica tradition: woman singing operatic, dude singin' Gothenburg death interjections, riffs for days, choral backups...strings! this is pretty hot, to tell you the truth
xpost oh you just posted that to get a rise out of me

Like I'll bet this guy is a completely solid dude with a lot of interesting ideas and the ability to make interesting connections in a really provocative way and all but the further we keep the shoegazing folk-rock from the black metal the happier I'll be & the further we keep the "blackened experimental metal" in carefully monitored containment the better it'll be for all concerned
that, + scholarly tomes on black metal are basically a recipe for annoying dudes like me

i'm increasingly really interested in black metal -- bought the new Castevet on Tuesday, and Ludicra's "Stagnant Pond" is so good that I just keep playing it over and overthinking of picking up that Krallice record ppl liked that came out last year
thinking of picking up that Krallice record ppl liked that came out last year
I ordered the Castevet too. get both Krallice albums.

lol.
so, I went to a gorguts show last night. ruled. and they played new stuff.
― original bgm, Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)
new stuff was not unlike from wisdom to hate but.... maybe with even twistier writing and more in the way of dynamics. some "clean" parts even!
― original bgm, Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:17 (sixteen years ago)
luc said he hopes to record a new album in the fall. (!!!)
― original bgm, Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)
man I probably mentioned this already but I went back to from wisdom to hate on a long drive recently and it is a totally slept-on album in my opinion. seemed like when it was new everybody was like "oh, they didn't take the obscura wildness even further" - and no, they didn't. instead they made a tech-death album so fucking awesome that I'm kind of kicking myself for not spending more time with it - I liked it a lot when it came out, but it can hold its own with all the other Gorguts albums in my opinion. seriously stoked for a new album!!

I am listening to the new Diabulus in Musica for the second time in a row. This kicks fucking ass. They sample an Obama speech on the third track! (I don't really have any idea why, I don't have a lyric sheet.) All power metal enthusiasts on board for this one imo
― in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 27 May 2010 14:33 (sixteen years ago)
the one thing is, the drumming seems kind of uninspired to me at points. it's one area of listening in which my ears have gotten pretty sensitive in recent years - if a drummer isn't really killing it, I notice. this guy isn't bad at all, I'm sure he could play rings around a lot of guys, but he doesn't play like he feels particularly compelled a lot of the time.

I'm downloading-- er, I mean "investigating" Diabolus in Musica right now.
― glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 27 May 2010 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
Oh, it really is Diabulus, not Diabolus.
Some weeks I feel like bands should just go by their EM id numbers, and forget the whole name thing. But that's probably a more appealing idea if you're 12 than if you're 3540288705.
― glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 27 May 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
Diabulus in Musica sounds promising, there are some cool Dark Tranquillity touches. When they're not going all Epica on us the singer actually reminds me of the singer from Brave, in that she takes a tasteful approach, never too bombastic, never too flitty. Thanks for the tip, smithdude, it's easy to lose track of everything Metal Blade puts out.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 27 May 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)
Got a vinyl order in the mail yesterday or the day before and getting around to this - man, Shadow Kingdom records can do no wrong in my book right now. This is an unreleased 1989 album by a band from Kansas who sound like darker late eighties metal - like their inspiration is in stuff like Sad Wings of Destiny, maybe a touch of Mercyful Fate but much slower - just a great vibe & great big crunchy guitar - if you can't get into eighties metal sounds this isn't for you but if you can, wow, this is fantastic.

smithy doesnt do polls!

Re the drumming on this Diabulus in Musica album: they list a drummer, but it sure sounds to me like a drum-machine throughout. I actually don't have any problem with that. For new bands, particularly, I think it can be helpful to not have to feel like you're trying to innovate on every instrument at once. Having a solid, basic frame on which the other players can build seems to me to be working in their favor here.
xpost: I was only joking about enumerating ass, but the elders among us will remember that it's possible to make lists of things that nobody votes on...

oh man the new Decibel's out! excited! going to the bookstore tonight to get it. now i have something to look forward to
― ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 18:28 (sixteen years ago)
Is that the Exodus issue or is there a newer one?

Is Terrorizer any good? It's really expensive -- like $9+ -- in the US.
― ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 20:55 (sixteen years ago)
I wish they would drop the promo CD and go back to charging $6.66. But it's definitely the most comparable in quality to Decibel.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 28 May 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
Oh wow, didn't know they made that move. Yeah, I'd rather not pay an extra $2+ for a CD. But I'll at least peek at it on the newsstand.
― ksh, Friday, 28 May 2010 21:03 (sixteen years ago)
because of the current economic climate they're having to cover some more of the bigger knuckledragging acts but its still a good mag. Its hardcore readers hate the deathcore coverage but they say they have no choice.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 28 May 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)
but they dont seem to cover the extreme but not metal end spectrum like they used to. You wont see Diamanda Galas on the cover now.

I'm sorry to do this, but I always find these threads so overwhelming and I don't know where to start. I don't know much about metal but I'm guessing I tend to like the so-called "hipster" stuff. If I have been given, and really like, the following albums, what are 3 more I should buy to try out?: Torche - "Meanderthal" // Black Breath - "Heavy Breathing" // Baroness - "Blue Record"... thanks and hope I haven't derailed things too much.
― Becky Facelift, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:11 (sixteen years ago)
You looking more for new/current releases?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
I guess so... I have eMusic credits to spend, so I've just looked up Coffinworm and the band that supposedly sounds like Fugazi mentioned above on there and they have both - I'm checking them out right now.
― Becky Facelift, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)
I would say the new Harvey Milk album then, but beware, it's very very bleak, but it might well be the best album they have done.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:28 (sixteen years ago)
Might want to check out Baroness's first record, Red Album, too!
Mastodon's Crack the Skye, which came out last year, is also quite excellent
― ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
And Torche - Torche
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
Don't waste your time with Harvey Milk. They're like a more boring Melvins. Definitely look into Baroness's Red Album, though.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
Becky, on eMusic, check out Slough Feg, Agalloch, Madder Mortem, and Opeth off the top of my head. Listen to the samples first and follow your nose. eMusic is a GREAT place to DL metal legitimately.
― we live on bagels we are Wburg FC (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
and the 2 Baroness eps (now on 1cd) which are even better than the albums.
I'll have to check that out, too. (Just bought Dimensional Breakthrough two hours or so ago, though, so that's on deck.)
― ksh, Saturday, 29 May 2010 17:34 (sixteen years ago)
I pre-ordered that a few months back on vinyl and it's supposedly shipped so hopefully it will be here next week.
