Yeah, this Hyponic album is excellent. I'm not sure I actually know what "trad doom vocals" are, but this has breathy, guttural moaning. The closest reference-point for me is Evoken, but this is slower and even darker than that.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

i guess trad vocals are actual singing, like saint vitus, not gutteral howls from the pits of hell.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

Not that im averse to gutteral howls as long as its not death metal :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

Moans, not howls. Howls would be if they were trying to get out of Hell...

That's a link to some sort of Amy Grant article, Smithy.

If I went on that cruise I'd actually be most geeked about seeing Raven.

thought the whole thing was a solid aerosmith joek b/c of the AG link, but Google tells me such a cruise exists, leading me to doubt said post's status as a joek

Oh, man. Very seriously considering that.

Aren't all the $666 cabins sold out? You got $3000 for an ILX Metal Thread FAP?

Oh, man. Very seriously considering that.

yeah me too. epica/amon amarth/moonspell/obituary...I mean come on. this is going to slay. to be honest, I can't see myself having the money to spare, let alone the time, but music cruises for all the lols they tend to generate are actually a whole lot of fun.

do you think they'd let me tie a one-person homemade raft-with-a-cabin-on-top to the back of the boat and still participate in everything for a heavily discounted ticket price?

ksh, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

this is totally awesome. bow down and pander to me, capitalists!

i'm not going to do this metal cruise because the thought makes me kind of nauseated, but still.

Watain fans on last.fm not impressed with new album http://www.last.fm/music/Watain

Lawless Darkness is an absolute snooze-fest, absolutely nothing stands out, it's over produced and souless. It's obvious the album was written to be played infront of an audience of low IQ metal fans. Shouldn't expect any less from a band who release a special edition of their album inside a Harry Potter book along with 100 different shirt designs, I guess.

# qattle wrote:

Wow, they are just getting worse and worse. The new album is so soft they sound like a hard rock band or something at times. I am quite disappointed.

I love how this is now how tr00 bands are distinguished from the false ones.

Black metal kids with their heads up their asses have a pretty interesting idea of what "mainstream" is.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure these guys are kids, they're older than you!

Well, they sound like kids.

that's tr00 keep my metal pure elitists for you

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Those people are (obviously) dumb asses. Metal's easy miscegenation with other genres is what's kept it alive and vital for all these years. Some of the hybrids have been... less successful than others, but genres that keep their sound "pure" tend to either go away, become boring, or fade into an extreme niche.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

Basically what I'm trying to say is that pirate metal is awesome.

X-Wing fighter in hand, "Godzilla" cranked on the stereo (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

just wait til hipsters adopt it ironically and see what you think then.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

these people maybe are idiots but if so it's not because they hate the new watain, it's because they rated watain in the first place lol

j/k I love everybody but watain is mad boring you guys

I'd never heard a Watain album before, I liked some of it. The album got 5/5 in Zero Tolerance and 10/10 in Terrorizer,so I figured I had to hear what the fuss was about. (of course those tr00 guys think those magazines are "mainstream" and Decibel is a disgusting fashion bible for hipster scum)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

the thing about the troo-troo dudes is this. if you miss out on everything they hate, for sure you're going to miss some decent stuff. but generally speaking if you only listened to the stuff they respect, you will be getting a diet of 100% awesome metal. I think there is something to that level of purity, just aesthetically. I'm not of their numbers, I listen to all manner of stuff & often am most interested in failed projects, weird off-kilter stuff that never really gelled, also-rans, etc., but I can kind of see these dudes' position, which is "anything that doesn't rule is garbage."

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno about that, sometimes they like something because it sounds exactly like they did 10 years ago. Who wants rehashed stuff over & over. Smithy I thought you would prefer the Darkthrone way of doing things.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

they rarely if ever rep hard for anything that's not great. they'll say "it's ok" about template-adhering things but I'll take a troo-dude's list of all-timers over anybody else's - it is bound to be chock full of albums that don't have a weak track on 'em. Herman I'd guess you would have a chip on your shoulders about these guys because like they wish you were not listening to the stuff they like and are vocal about it and that's the sort of thing that really sticks in yr craw n'est-pas

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

"anything that doesn't rule is garbage." isn't their stance. The quality of the music doesn't even come into it most of the time. It's more a case of "only 500 people are into these guys and they dont do interviews and they hate the mainstream". Nothing to do with the quality of music, its hardly ever mentioned, they always talk about everything but the music!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

I dont have a chip on my shoulder though. I dont really care what they think, its just fun to talk about on the internet. I couldnt care less if they approve of me listening or not, im pretty sure that would be the same case for any other genre of music "oh he likes *insert genre* hes not one of us" I never worried about that shit when i was younger and at 37 I certainly dont now! I do like to slag off hipsters into the xx though, that is true :)

none of this is true

in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

like "they're only into it 'cause it's obscure," c'mon dude, that is always a bullshit accusation to level - you can't prove it at all, it's just a way of dismissing somebody's opinion

this is the last I'll say about it I got other shit to do but the troo dudes tend to have superlative taste in my experience whereas people without those somewhat ridiculous self-imposed boundaries end up repping for really dull watered-down prog trash so gimme a troo dude's playlist over anybody else's, the end

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_W8BxmcUmLgc/S_s6dHJUTcI/AAAAAAAAFzU/YJtROeWZnG8/s200/Cleric-Regressions-CD.jpg

Cleric - Regressions
A four piece from Philadelphia, Cleric's music mixes elements of grindcore, avant garde composition, doom and... something else entirely? Influenced by other metal pioneers such as Meshuggah, Converge, Fantômas, and Neurosis, their music zeroes in on a level of brutality and experimentation that a single band rarely maintains even for a few seconds.
