Right up until their last album Slipknot had put together a very strong series of albums. That debut really took me aback in 99.
Terrible news about their bass player.

Thurston Moore the next member of Twilight? Blake Judd says it's in the works.

Cool interview; I like the Twilight album, haven't heard the Nachtmystium yet. Btw I thought Tony Laureano did the drums on Assassins? But I agree, Wrest is a fine drummer with a very solid downbeat in his blasting, a bit like Dave Grave from Repulsion actually. I was pretty impressed with Nachtmystium's show at Roadburn, and I'm not really a big fan. Judd kicked some guys out of the band right before Roadburn, didn't he? They played with Astrosoniq's guitar player as a last moment replacementand a drummer who looked a *lot* like Wrest, but probably was someone else.
― Thijs, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:25 (sixteen years ago)
You're right about Laureano, Simmons was their live drummer for a spell. Thanks for that.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:31 (sixteen years ago)
anyone else go to wolves in the throne room in camden? to me they are ok on record, but live they killed.
That's good to hear, I'm seeing them on Saturday in Utrecht.
Just a word of warning: I love mastodon, and I've seen them do great shows before, but they seem to be phoning in this tour. They were really... off when I saw them.
I got the feeling that Mastodon were sick of playing Crack the Skye in its entirety
Mastodon just cancelled their European tour, Bill Kelliher has pancreatitis.

I call them indie rock people, that’s a very fucking unfair generalization of a dude with short hair, jeans and a t-shirt that looks like he might have a day job.
lawl Blake Judd should post on ILX

Too bad about the Slipknot guy. The couple times Ive seen them, they fucking brought it live.

Greetings, rolling metal thread friends. I know some of you, like me, occasionally enjoy a slab of sludge-thick, slug-slow doom metal that seems to rise from some black pit of magma in a hidden crevice somewhere in a far region of the earth. Well, recently, during my ongoing-but-I-promise-the-next-thing-I-buy-will-be-the-last-for-a-while metal CDs-and-LPs spending spree, I took a chance on a band from Hong Kong called Hyponic - the album's from 2005 and is called The Noise of Time. If crushing downtempo doom is your thing, I urge you to see out this record as soon as possible. I am not really Mr. Doom Dude but I can dig it from time to time - I like Moss, love Cathedral of course but that's a little different - this is more in the slow-that-shit-way-down/roar-like-an-ogre style. But God damn is this doom done right in my opinion. The one thing is, the drums aren't really as huge as you'd normally expect doomy drums to be - but maybe that's why this record is standing out for me so much; the atmosphere is largely a product of the guitars. But it's not that the drums sound bad - just that they're not prioritized the same way as on lots of other "funereal doom" style stuff.
This album is really something else, anyway, and I recommend it.

That sounds great u.a.a.i.h.l. - right up my alley. If it's as good as prior recommendations on your part (Wetnurse rules!) I'll be very happy.

OK Smithy I'll check it out too.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 17:58 (sixteen years ago)
is it trad doom vocals or death/doom stuff? Im guessing the latter?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 18:05 (sixteen years ago)
Great interview with Blake, Adrien! That was a real treat to read.

Yeah, this Hyponic album is excellent. I'm not sure I actually know what "trad doom vocals" are, but this has breathy, guttural moaning. The closest reference-point for me is Evoken, but this is slower and even darker than that.
― glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
i guess trad vocals are actual singing, like saint vitus, not gutteral howls from the pits of hell.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:03 (sixteen years ago)
Not that im averse to gutteral howls as long as its not death metal :)
Moans, not howls. Howls would be if they were trying to get out of Hell...

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
Those people are (obviously) dumb asses. Metal's easy miscegenation with other genres is what's kept it alive and vital for all these years. Some of the hybrids have been... less successful than others, but genres that keep their sound "pure" tend to either go away, become boring, or fade into an extreme niche.
